I live in a 4000 peso apartment in Albay. I spent less Than 1500 usd for a fridge, stove, ac and bed and two wardrobes and all other necessities. Total monthly housing expenses including all utilities including cable tv and internet are 180.00-195.00. The apartment is safe and perfectly livable.
Tim G i was paying also 4,000 a month for a 2 bed 1 bath apt then had the other room rented when i'm not there so been paying 2,000 a month for sometime.
Good too know I’m a bit of a minimalist in the U.S. saving money. Starting to think I could get ready to retire now instead of 4 years the more research I do the more I see it would be very possible.
Hi Brian From April 2010 for a full year I had a apartment just inside Doolittle Street, very close to where you used to be if I have watched properly your videos. There I was paying for a 2 bedroom P8500 a month plus the normal 1 month advance and the deposit for utilities I think it was about P25k. If I ever get to stay long term again or even permanently, after watching your videos I would do things just that little differently. As usual this video was informative so another THUMBS UP, not sure why some have clicked THUMBS DOWN but everyone to their own taste, what a boring world it would be if we all liked the same thing. Keep the videos coming always good to watch.
The frost build up is due to the door being open all the time. Warm air meets cold...condensation. Keep the freezer part packed and put a couple of liter bottles of frozen water inside so the temperature doesn’t decrease so quickly when you open the door.

Another important factor to check out is the water pressure, exhaust fumes coming in from the streets, nearby karaoke type businesses, neighbors that don’t work/play loud music karaoke type Businesses that open up at night and window types. Jalousie Windows can be broken into easily and do not keep cold air conditioned air in which will lead to the AC being on all the time and waste of electricity/ increase cost.

Isn't that what you signed for? I'm sure you heard the praise you marry a Filipina you marry her family. If you don't like it that family members are always asking for assistancer then just say no. It might strain your relationship with your wife but at the end they will get the message. If you keep giving they will not stop asking. Holiday is a big event in the Philippines and in many countries. If you can't afford to spend money don't go there again. And stay in your domicile by yourself
Im filipino based here in the usa.everytime i visit the phil ,i either tell my family, friends,relatives that im there to have r and r and not listen to their problems or i just visit rp without telling them that im there.i send them money monthly and dont want to spend another dime on them. All of them will call me if they need something but never greet me on special occassions.

I straight up say "NO". My SO sends a set monthly amount and that's it. Most of her family doesn't even work. They live for free and constantly ask for handouts. That's called begging for a free-ride in life, not on my dime. We both work our asses off while they post constant updates of themselves enjoying our handouts. It's astonishing.

Nothing wrong with that apartment to be honest. Compact so should be easy to manage. Air con and a few home comforts and I could live there. As long as it's secure no problem.

hey Ken I have lived in the Philippines for 30 years and i live in Bacoor Cavite, we like here because easy to get to Manila, Laguna, Tagaytay, and even get to Angeles and Subic are just two hours from Cavite. Apartments are cheaper here then even Angeles City but yes it all depends the location in Cavite.

Most Filipino type apartments don’t have shower heads. They fill the buckets, wet their skin, lather up and rinse. Of course, you can add a shower head and that would probably cost you 500-1000 php for the fixture and connectors.

Brian, did I ever mention to you that I once rented an apartment in Samsonville subdivision? It’s the area across McDonalds Dau. Walk down the road till you see the Clark International college turn on your right side and walk a bit more till you see the Melania Street on your left. My land lady charged me 5k for a studio apartment. It’s neat and safe. Tenants have their own service door and the landlady is a kitchen wonder! She’ll invite you frequently in every party she’ll hosts if you’ve gotten more acquainted with her. Very nice lady
I totally agreed of all the stuff that he was saying , living in the Philippines as an ordinary person is not cheap but if your a foreigner and you have a tons of money to start a business then Philippines is the best ,you just need to be smart, be business minded person and look for what type of business that is in demand to the location you were trying to put your business.
Love this video Brian When i am there we live very simple. But we have no rent only have to buy food and what ever entertainment we want to do. It really does depend on the person. I find living simple great for me.

By the way, D'morvie hotels, cost only 400 pesos a day in cagayan de oro, in davao cost 450 pesos, small room with air conditioning, 40 inch flat cable TV. Wifi internet, washroom and toilet inside the room.
Hi Brian. For a single person, that small 1 bedroom apartment is good if you're starting. Lot of filipinos can tolerate with no Air con, but most expats can't tolerate the heat. A small unit Air con, very minimal furniture, small size ref, and 1 burner stove, apartment good to rent. Jane Dudynsky my bedroom is on the second floor so i get good breezes but i have the ac one in awhile, i pay less than $80 for an unfurnished 2 bed 1 bath, for cooking i have a rice cooker and a 1 burner stove, breakfast daily by the beach then make lunch at home and for dinner just buy take out food, neighbors can be nosy and will know your routine so i got guard dogs to keep me company. where i live i got the aircon and patio furniture on credit, i pay a monthly installment plan, with cable tv and wifi and just a 4 unit complex.

It was still very vague. if you could have stuck with a 'for instance' and tallied it up, what the costs were for transportation or for paying a laundress or how much a refrigerator or gas stove cost, how much a tank of propane cost, stuff like that would have been more helpful. What are your hours for your store and how long are your lights on how much is your utility bill for running the store? That could give me a guess a my electric bill coz I gotta have ac ! How much does a scooter cost ? Do I have to carry insurance? How big a deal is it if you have an accident? If there's something that needs to be fixed in your apartment do you have to fix it? will the landlord? These are things that are just too dang hard to find on the Internet, so I asking you.

You have it easy there buddy. Here in Canada, 1 Bedroom apartment $1200 a month/ not including hydro electricity $200-300 a month/ Groceries $300-400 a month, Phone/Internet $200 a month, Other expenses, eating out, movies etc.. $ $150-200 a month= $2300 living very cheaply a month.
Same in the states. Well here in Maine anyway. Rents are completely out of control. They keep raising minimum wage and as soon as they do the cost of living goes right up with it. There are fewer and fewer extremely rich, u know, like crazy ass rich, and more and more poor. It’s easy to see what is coming.
Have a think about Palwan...its Boracay 20 years ago...we invested 200k which gave us a house in the centre of town with an acre and a mini stop which generates over 40k a year..so in 5 years we got our money back...but also have a think about the fact that all countries within the OECD have a tri partisan law whereby you do not have to pay tax in our countries if you live in Pinas and work in yr said country as long as you work in your country for 1 day less than 6 months...welcome to Pinas....

Lots of concerns about insects I'm seeing. It's a tropical climate, in my experience you must live with the insects. There is no pest control, that would be pointless. There are measures you can take to protect your things. You can get plastic dish covers at the SM or Hyper Mart to store your dishes, cups, utensils etc. And store your food in containers as well. I personally wouldn't rent an apartment like that, but it might be ok for someone else with less of a budget. I furnished a 2 bedroom townhouse style apartment in Mabalacat from top to bottom (bedroom, living room, kitchen, fridge, aircon EVEYTHING!) for about $2500 US. The apartment itself was $120 US. I loved it and can't wait to go back!
don't smoke, don't drink, eat native and live cheap for 4000 pesos and you can live $500.00 or $600.00, i'm looking for cheap in the cebu provinces closer in that price range
A near beach and an ice cold beer is sufficient. I would advice if you a good amount of money and want to live here in the Philippines invest on business spend it wisely.
for sure if people want to act like a rich person it will cost .i been to manila ,also angeles city and got by with $500 aud for the month .lucky some countries allow you to have your pension and live there but not all countries do .

I hear all kinds of hype on rental rates in the P.I. From $80 to $2000 a month in U.S. dollars. I have to assume that a more realistic figure is somewhere in the middle of those numbers for a nice apartment or cottage with utilities. Like $1000 +/-- per month with security deposit? What would that get me in the P.I.? People I chat with (and videos) who have been there for awhile say to stay away from Manila. Not safe, etc. What about Cebu City? Or Port Angeles? How is Bancock, Thailand and surrounding area? What websites are best for reading up on social customs in each? Where is the best place to stay for a few months if I want to go and check things out in either place? Where to avoid? How do these same costs compare to Thailand? How long can I stay on a tourist visa in either one? I may split my time between the two. Not sure yet. Do I need to show a record of vaccinations? If so which ones? Are Thai people more or less receptive to western men than in the P.I.? How do the above questions compare between the P.I. and Thailand? Please advise. Many thanks to everyone. Very good video, it just gives people something to think about before they make the big leap there. They better have all their bases covered, because there is no safety net. Though some items seem very cheap, it all adds up, if you don’t have an adequate income stream to support the lifestyle you choose to have there. I almost made the leap when I was 35 and my wife kept me grounded and said not yet lol. Thank god she did, but now we own a house a restaurant and a decent savings so soon we will make the move. i live in chicago and pay 435 for a studio every thing paid 500 feet i would take my time and slowly buy a piece at a time. first would be a freeze ,and bed .
I Lived in a two bed room duplex in Dumaguete we payed 5000. ( 125.00 )a month and about 8000. ( 190.00 ) for power,water and a cable TV package a month. propane, drinking water, and food another 150.so we lived pretty cheap. but we had everything we needed at home when we were there. we still had some play money so we could travel and see the sights or lounge on the beach, and have a beer when we wanted as well. hahaah had a great time. I Can hardly wait to get there to Retire. next year :-)
All those things you're talking about isn't even that expensive. It cost about $1,100-$1,500 USD a month to get an unfurnished bedroom apartment here in Hawaii. And that's without utilities. Utilities will run about another $400-$600 dollars. So all the things you bring up isnt even a problem.
I payed 500$ Digos city 2 bd 2 cr con air in a fenced compound security fence I liked good view etc Con air not east to find I notice like you say you often have to buy your own con air for cheaper rent.

For foreigners starting businesses, I say start small. The sari sari store is a good idea. Succeed with that, and then move up or branch out.

It's not in the best shape, but you can't beat that price. 4000 a month is a good price. It just needs a little TLC.

Get one of those x-large ovens at Walmart. You can cook a whole pizza and save on electricity since it's only 110v. Around $99.

You have it easy there buddy. Here in Canada, 1 Bedroom apartment $1200 a month/ not including hydro electricity $200-300 a month/ Groceries $300-400 a month, Phone/Internet $200 a month, Other expenses, eating out, movies etc.. $ $150-200 a month= $2300 living very cheaply a month.
Same in the states. Well here in Maine anyway. Rents are completely out of control. They keep raising minimum wage and as soon as they do the cost of living goes right up with it. There are fewer and fewer extremely rich, u know, like crazy ass rich, and more and more poor. It’s easy to see what is coming.

Have a think about Palwan...its Boracay 20 years ago...we invested 200k which gave us a house in the centre of town with an acre and a mini stop which generates over 40k a year..so in 5 years we got our money back...but also have a think about the fact that all countries within the OECD have a tri partisan law whereby you do not have to pay tax in our countries if you live in Pinas and work in yr said country as long as you work in your country for 1 day less than 6 months...welcome to Pinas....

Lots of concerns about insects I'm seeing. It's a tropical climate, in my experience you must live with the insects. There is no pest control, that would be pointless. There are measures you can take to protect your things. You can get plastic dish covers at the SM or Hyper Mart to store your dishes, cups, utensils etc. And store your food in containers as well. I personally wouldn't rent an apartment like that, but it might be ok for someone else with less of a budget. I furnished a 2 bedroom townhouse style apartment in Mabalacat from top to bottom (bedroom, living room, kitchen, fridge, aircon EVEYTHING!) for about $2500 US. The apartment itself was $120 US. I loved it and can't wait to go back!

for sure if people want to act like a rich person it will cost .i been to manila ,also angeles city and got by with $500 aud for the month .lucky some countries allow you to have your pension and live there but not all countries do .

I hear all kinds of hype on rental rates in the P.I. From $80 to $2000 a month in U.S. dollars. I have to assume that a more realistic figure is somewhere in the middle of those numbers for a nice apartment or cottage with utilities. Like $1000 +/-- per month with security deposit? What would that get me in the P.I.? People I chat with (and videos) who have been there for awhile say to stay away from Manila. Not safe, etc. What about Cebu City? Or Port Angeles?
How is Bancock, Thailand and surrounding area? What websites are best for reading up on social customs in each? Where is the best place to stay for a few months if I want to go and check things out in either place? Where to avoid? How do these same costs compare to Thailand? How long can I stay on a tourist visa in either one? I may split my time between the two. Not sure yet. Do I need to show a record of vaccinations? If so which ones? Are Thai people more or less receptive to western men than in the P.I.? How do the above questions compare between the P.I. and Thailand? Please advise.

Very good video, it just gives people something to think about before they make the big leap there. They better have all their bases covered, because there is no safety net. Though some items seem very cheap, it all adds up, if you don’t have an adequate income stream to support the lifestyle you choose to have there. I almost made the leap when I was 35 and my wife kept me grounded and said not yet lol. Thank god she did, but now we own a house a restaurant and a decent savings so soon we will make the move. i live in chicago and pay 435 for a studio every thing paid 500 feet i would take my time and slowly buy a piece at a time. first would be a freeze ,and bed .

I Lived in a two bed room duplex in Dumaguete we payed 5000. ( 125.00 )a month and about 8000. ( 190.00 ) for power,water and a cable TV package a month. propane, drinking water, and food another 150.so we lived pretty cheap. but we had everything we needed at home when we were there. we still had some play money so we could travel and see the sights or lounge on the beach, and have a beer when we wanted as well. hahaah had a great time. I Can hardly wait to get there to Retire. next year :-)

All those things you're talking about isn't even that expensive. It cost about $1,100-$1,500 USD a month to get an unfurnished bedroom apartment here in Hawaii. And that's without utilities. Utilities will run about another $400-$600 dollars. So all the things you bring up isnt even a problem.

I payed 500$ Digos city 2 bd 2 cr con air in a fenced compound security fence I liked good view etc Con air not east to find I notice like you say you often have to buy your own con air for cheaper rent.
