When I was about 5, around 1961, my mom let me walk to the hardware store alone, because I begged her. It was not far at all. When I crossed a little alley, a man in a trench coat came out, put his arm around me, and asked me to come into the alley with him. I said. "No, my mom told me to go STRAIGHT to the store, and STRAIGHT home." I was so proud of myself. The man, realizing someone was watching for me, said okay, and slinked back into the alley. When I got home, my mom asked me how it went, and I told her about the man. She had a complete meltdown, and called my dad, who was a homicide detective. He came home with a couple other detectives. They questioned me, and went looking for this man. I was crying and had no idea what was wrong. I remember this clearly, and shiver when I realize how close I came to being a victim.

Understanding when you dont understand or knowing when you dont know is sadly a very rare trait in most of mankind. The same goes for being able to acknowledge the difference between ones opinions or feelings on a matter and what might actually be for the greater good. If everyone had these boxes checked humankind would probably be able to have nice things.

In the US, we've already had a case where a girl got into a car she THOUGHT was her Uber, but it was just someone claiming to be, and she was killed. I forget where this happened but... I was thinking about that when I listened to the podcast version.
In San Francisco a few weeks ago, a DoorDash driver was working late at night and couldn't afford a baby sitter and his kids were asleep in the back of his car, and someone ran up and stole his car with his kids in it while he was dropping off an order. Luckily the kids were found OK the next day. But your predictions around this stuff... already true, Simon.

Yes there's a few exceptions where they're using modern technology to make a show and the private companies are throwing a lot more money at a show to make huge blockbusters, that used to be the sole preserve of Film and when done right those are amazing. The series format working even better than the movie in many cases as it offers more time to really go deep etc.
However those are definitely the exceptions not the general rule where most TV made is just a slightly updated version of what we had and then there's all the cheap rubbish reality stuff. As you say the main difference is the amount of choice and the new ways of watching. Also as you say there's a whole lot more rubbish as well.

@@dawnklug6986 we certainly appreciated it more and there were some amazing shows. We had to suspend our disbelief a bit more due to them not having the special effects etc to fall back on but that made them suck you in using the script rather than the eye candy. It was different but you can't say it was better.
It's definitely easier to find something that you want to watch as you can put anything on at any time you want. However this has removed that amazing thing of going to school the day after a popular show and everyone talking about it etc.

They almost always get sentences that are too short and then paroled so they just continue their crimes. It almost always requires a death for these POS to be jailed for life. We all know that these guys (usually) are wired in a way that makes them impossible to rehabilitate but the justice system is intent on giving them second, third chances, leaving more victims behind. People get stiffer penalties for abusing animals than they get for assault, rape. It’s sickening but we see these stories all the time. Masters of Science in Criminal Justice here. NO, refusing to take a polygraph is absolutely NOT a sign of guilt. They are inadmissible because they are 1) extremely unreliable, and 2) interpretation of the results is subjective. You can ask five polygraph examiners which questions a person was truthful about and not truthful about during a polygraph, and you will get several different answers. Thus, they have been deemed inadmissible UNLESS you take one voluntarily. Before they were ruled inadmissible, many, many innocent people were sent to prison due to polygraphs. Any attorney will tell you not to take a polygraph, whether you're guilty or innocent. Hope that clears up the statement that "if you're innocent, take the polygraph."

So, my thought about Uber and Lyft and the like...
If you use a taxi, you get a car that's in a random place, the driver has no idea who you are and nobody has any record of it, and if they want to kill you, there's no record of anything and they know it. If you use Uber/Lyft/somesuch, there's a record of it at the web site even before they pick you up, there's a record of you getting in the car and where it took you (your own phone sends the location to the web site, and theirs does too if they told it they picked you up), so there's lots of record who they are and where they took you if they want to hurt you, and they know it.

You can call for taxis too but to say that it will be surprising when theres the first uber drivers ignores the 100+ yrs modern taxis have existed (The taxicabs of Paris were equipped with the first meters beginning on 9 March 1898. They were originally called taxibread, then renamed taximètres on 17 October 1904.") Based on movies taxi drivers have to keep in touch with dispatch and dispatch probably keeps track of how many miles are being driven (its probably not like food delivery where delivery drivers own the cars-but you still need to keep a log if you want to be reimbursed). Is it possible for a taxi driver to be a killer sure but its also possible for pilots to kill 100s of people (Germanwings Flight 9525). While it has happened (Lam Kor-wan) it seems unlikely that taxi drivers would be more likely to kill while on the clock compared to uber drivers because arent uber drivers freelance? They have no boss to report to (it's like ebay where you post something on their website but they have no say in how you run your business). 2/3 of taxi drivers work for a company (and don't own the taxi they drive).

I saw a tv special about The Dating Game Killer awhile back and it was ironic how little time it spent on the dating show incident. His actual crimes had nothing to do with The Dating Game, he just happened to be on The Dating Game once.

I have friends and relatives who went on the Dating Game back in the day. For the most part, the participants were actors and comedians trying to get screen time in the era before reality tv. One of my friends won a date with a future star of Melrose Place (they never actually went out, they both went on for the above mentioned screen time. It worked for one of them).

I remember The Dating Game. I think it started in the 60s and went on into the early 70s. But I don't recall it being on during prime time. I recall it being during the day with other game shows. It was followed by The Newlywed Game, and I used to think it was fabulous to be home from school sick (cough, cough) to watch game shows and soap operas. And I am giving you major side eye that all TV back then was horrible. It. was. Not.

You were correct Simon, California did abolish the death penalty for a period of time. Initially, the statute authorizing the death penalty statute was found unconstitutional because the methods of execution allowed (gas chamber or electric chair) were found to be cruel and unusual punishment. When the statute was struck down, all prisoners sentenced to death under that statute had their sentences commuted to life without parole, which is how Manson escaped his death penalty sentence. Subsequently, the CA legislature enacted a new death penalty law crafted specifically to avoid the "cruel and unusual" portion of the previous statute by only allowing lethal injection, and the death penalty became a thing again in California.

I think background checks at the time were just seeing an ID and calling the local police and asking if they've been arrested. That's called a level one background check. Camps today do a level two, nation-wide, background check with fingerprints, partly because of things like this.

I saw that modernized Romeo and Juliet in high school I think... I remember that they had it where the guns in that movie had their branding as "Sword" brand guns... So it made sense with them talking about drawing their Swords while holding guns... What I really liked was this other movie which was a modernized version of MacBeth, and it basically has vibes of like WW1 Russia/USSR sort of... The witches are creepy nurses and stuff...
