- After too many hours looking for instructions on building Nuc boxes I decided to create the simplest version possible, I hope you enjoy!
First video ever, please forgive any mistakes or unprofessional videography. 😃
Excellent. Cheap, simple and to the point. Perfect for budget minded bee keepers!!
Thanks, glad to be of service.
I could tell as soon as I opened the video and saw the joints that it is a practical construction method. This is a great method for making 1 box or 100. By the way, our plywood cost in Michigan is up 252% in the last year.
THANKS TO BRANDON, FJB
Excellent idea, so I have automatically a handle on both sides. Why didn't I think of this myself. Thank you for uploading. Now my boxes will be all Chillhouse style.
Brilliant. Just made four of them.
Thanks. Very nice work on the boxes. cuts look clean and straight also.
Thanks Paul enjoyed your video and will be making some of these nucs for my yard. New subscriber
Well done Paul. Finally measurements in metrics. Well done, good clean simple instructions for 5 & 2 frame nuc boxes. Next stop painting, plus a vid about what you use them for.
Thanks Jerra, I think there is plenty of "what i use them for" from much more experienced bee keepers, working on a (how to build a deck) video at the moment, building stuff is kind of where my experience comes in handy, but I'll give it some thought. Thanks Paul
Good job, Paul. Short and sweet, to the point.
Great video. Thanks for jumping in with some good information.
Thank you for simplifying this concept! I'm going to try this soon!
Looks good. I imagine one could use 2 pieces of 1X lumber on each side in place of plywood if they find it at the right width. I made one with pallet boards on the sides, very similar to this. And I had some old 2Xs that were already painted going to waste so I cut them to the right length for the front and backs of some Nucs. I figured the Bees would be happier with the thicker wood on the ends.
Good work. Most importantly more propolis. Bees will like it. Like from Ukraine👍
Thanks 👍
This is by far the easiest way to build a nuc that I have seen. Thanks for posting.
Pleased to be of assistance, in fact quite excited that people are happy with it especially considering how average the actual performance is.
Nice one buddy, thank you for the video 🐝🐝
No problem 👍
I made my front and rear panels the same and screwed both from the bottom. No need to make 2 different sizes for that. I also make my top and bottoms the same. Needless to say, I used 1x12 inch pine that I cut for the sides. US keeper here.
Good Video, and no need to apologize.
Good idea, the great French happy keeper Titou do the same, flavor Ricard 👍
😉
Good on you, mate 👍
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing.
Great video, thanks so much!
My pleasure!
Brilliant Paul, have been thinking about making nuc's for a while now and this is the best idea yet.
I have subscribed, Cheers 👍
Hi Steven, just wondering how my video got noticed? "Idiot proof nuc boxes", noticed that a large amount came from Facebook, just wondering if you knew who was responsible for that? Thanks Paul
@@Chillhouseminifarm Hi Paul, I found it on you tube. Don't use Facebook myself so can't help with that.
@@stevencraig1871 Thanks for the reply, how did your boxes go?
@@Chillhouseminifarm Unfortunately I have national hives, the lugs on each end of my frames are longer than yours which meant it didn't work out. Do you see my problem ?
@@stevencraig1871 Hi Steven, I'd like to solve that problem for you but are not familiar with National hives. I'll look it up and try to find a solution.
Great video. Thank you, you made it look simple. Suggestion; perhaps you could put those dimensions into your description for the video? It would be so helpful.
Cheers
Deb
Good for dry climates, but the exposed plywood edges will need plenty of paint in the wetter parts of the world
Thank you!!! I'm trying to do this.
Good luck, it is as easy as it looks.
Excellent work
Great job!
This is how Barnyard Bees make their Boxes... There are
Hundreds in their Apiary, all
painted different Colours !
Check it out... I think if your in a Colder Climate, like here in Scotland, you would have to add more insulation, and, or cluster them together. To give them more protection. 👍
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Yeah, pretty sure I mentioned Barnyard in the video, full credit to them!
I think Barnyard Bee makes theirs out of 3/4 Advantech which Lowes has for $101 bucks a sheet now..kinda pricey.. soon we'll all be making boxes out of used card board if things keep going up..
I have done this same way 😉😉🐝🐝🐝 perfect 🐝🐝
I like the boxes but would just change the bottom to a screen and make them so i could slide in a 1/4" piece of plasticore or plywood to make it a solid bottom and could easily use the wand and oxalic acid to treat for Varroa mites.
🐝😍
Thanks!!
Good information sir❤️🐝
Great idea using a standard timber size and for keeping it simple.
But cost wise I just can't work it out to be only $15 for the 5 frame. If the 190x19 is around $10/lm then you're already at $10 for base, front & sides (991mm required)... then add the ply sides cut from a large sheet will cost around $10 (using 19mm).... plus the lid & other small bits and you're around A$25. Or is there something I'm miscalculating?
Hi Darryn, yes you are probably correct but I used 15mm ply which is slightly cheaper and it was also before the governments of the world decided to put us into hyperinflation for materials. I didn't account for the top etc. I wasn't really trying to portray the cheapest version, more so portraying the easiest version. To tell you the truth, I honestly didn't assume it would have many views at all, just realized there was a need for a simplistic version with cutting sizes for everyone with basic tools to produce, price wasn't my concern.
@@Chillhouseminifarm Cool thanks for replying and yes the design is great.
I was excited about it being $15 materials but I think at >$25 I'd be more likely to buy a ready made one
Hi Paul. Good video but what are the widths of the front and back. Height 250mm and 231mm just need the width. 😊
Nice job, what else have you got?
I've got a "how to build a Deck" coming very soon. Not sure how that will go with the Bee crowd? But my specialty is building things so well see how it goes!
American Langstroth or British hive?
I make 2 frame boxes from broccoli styro boxes..........cost $0
Can you pls send me a link to that? I'd be very interested in how you do that. Thanks. 😊
Were are the plans & measurements
about making a roof on next video?
Thanks
Yes, I will be doing a new version of this video and include the feeder box and top. Coming very soon!
Hello There. I think you guys are getting cheated over there. We can build 2-frame Nucs for around $5 - $8. Here in USA
Yes we Aussie’s don’t have much native softwood so we have to pay for plantation timber.
Just because he says
it's $15 ... It's Aussie Dollars !
Can't compare to US Dollars.
They are different "Currency." exchange rates etc... 🥺
Where is the hole?
Sorry, I use a translator
Hole not drilled in video, drill a hole at front and fit a round entrance gate.
Mixing plywood and wood is not a good idea. Why? You'll see after a few seasons. I did that, and years later they are useless.
Did you paint them proper
Can't hear it
