Yea for sure! But the best part is that the risk of totally screwing something up with smd analog circuitry is low (if your hands are steady and skills are sufficient). It's the programmed digital stuff that can make it or break it, we just need to stay away from that area of the circuit ;)
Thanks... This video began with that in mind, I recorded like 10 minutes and then found out the audio from my tascam model 12 to my iphone glitched out after the 1:27 mark so unfortunately for now this is all we get :/ will try to make another video...
More of this! So cool! Can you do a full demo with descriptions of the mods as you use them? Id love to be able to hear the mods and associate them together.
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! It's definitely a lot of work to do, but I think with practice, motivation and the right tools anyone can successfully mod these as well ;)
@@PatchDog hey thanks, the bass drum was lowered in pitch and I added a little tuning range. Also an envelope amount control, and one that softens the transient for a smoother sound. Unfortunately the compromise with working with T-bridge circuits is the limited range before there’s a lot of feedback if going too far. But I’m working on another rd6 that has a wider pitch range and takes advantage of that feedback, which maybe a ringmod circuit may suit or an additional vca.
@@Sequence303 I find with the mods the entire thing is now far more useful. It’s great that it has midi as well so I think right now, it’s my favourite sounding analog drum machine surprisingly.
@@cnfuzz So if it looks like i'm turning stuff and nothing is happening, you're listening on a small speaker that isn't translating the kick's fundamental frequencies. If you listened on a larger speaker - especially one with a sub, you should hear some very low frequencies being adjusted. There's two components to the kick sound, one that cuts through on small speakers and one that fills in the lows. The controls on the kick mostly control the lows.
amazing work, i know everyone keeps asking you, but you reckon there's a way to help you publish the list of changes done to the circuits? i would love to replicate this, if not incorporate some aspects for sure! Let me know if i can be of help to publish or index this!!!!
Apologies i intended to make it a longer more in depth video but my audio got screwed not even 2 minutes into recording and I didn’t notice until after. But I will try to redo something to show off more features. There’s stuff like tunable kick, tunable snare, tunable toms, 2 high hat noise source modes, decay settings for most sounds. Some mods turned out to be very subtle but I since I drilled the holes left the mods. Two off the top of my head are the Tom noise amount and the Tom “clampulator” mod. All the mods can be found on maffez’s site.
Considering the quality of Behringer's circuit boards I'm highly impressed by this work. It doesn't take much to brick these things bending them the next form factor is getting stupid small like phone level. 🤷♂
@@juicythedj750 masking and components etc. though it's miles ahead of previous things they've done have you ever worked on a Behringer euromixer? Not fun.
The rd6 pcb is quite sturdy. The components are pretty much as micro as it gets or pretty near, like you say similar to what you see in modern cell phones. The TD3 thankfully has larger parts and are easier to work with. I have modded a td3 similarly and hope to also make a video of that as well.
Thanks for the compliments. I mostly used the Maffez site mods but some stuff I either tweaked to get a value more in range with what I preferred or just used a close value of parts I had on hand. I’ve started another purple rd6 and it’s already started off different… it’s going to have a greater range of kick tuning (which comes with a compromise of having to adjust for feedback) but it will be much more flexible.
Well, old digital stuff could probably be circuit bent with some sort of success... but with analog stuff it's more practical because it's the circuitry you can change to influence the sound. Digital stuff is all either dsp chips or samples stored on a rom, so you can't do much except cross connections that sound glitchy. Not suitable for every type of music though.
wow, man!!! What did you mod? Can you let us know how you connected to your amp? Would love to rebuild...Have a real big stereo here at home, never got mine to sound that big! Cheerio from her(i)o.
Hey there, I modded every sound with something… mostly stuff like tun-ability, decay, envelope amounts etc to each sound. I recorded this direct with a tascam model 12 mixer and my iPhone camera. Glad you listened on a better speaker system than a phone, it helps hear the huge difference!
@@Tripwelleverday I’ve got an rd8 awaiting a few minor mods like the rimzilla and phase correction… but no plans to go crazy on one of those at the moment.
It felt absurd making as well... but actually worthwhile in the end. I see doing mod projects like this much like people who spend hours and hours building complicated hobby models, but the finished product is something you can actually use and far more gratifying. May as well make it look nice too ;)
Yea… unfortunately B don’t seem to have boundaries for such things. But arguably a lot of mods should technically be public domain just because it’s literally “take this resistor and replace it with a pot” and by circuit design that’s the only/most common way of adding a particular sound parameter.
@@justspacegoatfarts haha yea it drove me nuts to do, so much fine adjustments to the casing to squeeze controls to fitting it together was a nightmare… plus every time I added a mod, it made it harder and harder to work on because of all the wires and things in the way
Incredible work. It's cool that the low cost of these devices allows experimenting without risking too much of a hit to your wallet!
