THRIFTING WITH MY MOM: • Come Thrift With Us! F...
This fall season, we are making some changes around our home. I am always trying to improve our lives in some way. This could be decluttering and simplifying and or eating healthier and trying to live a more fulfilling life. Today I am sharing our fall home updates and how we reset for the cozy fall season. I hope you are having a great day! Leave me a comment and let me know what you are looking forward to this fall =)
Hi Shannon, Mom here! The pendulum swings and I think you have found a pleasant center point. Your house is not cluttered but it is pleasing to the eye and a happy place to be. I enjoy seeing the Fall decor and I'm excited to eat your chocolate muffins. Love MOM
Thanks, Mom! I agree. I like how our home feels cozy but not cluttered. =) I need to make more muffins because those didn't last long.
I love how you commented on Shannon’s video♥️☺️
Hi Kathy! What do you like to do for fall decor at your house? Hope you're enjoying your weekend!🧡
This is everything right here!❤❤❤❤❤ Your mum commenting..❤❤ love to both you and shannon from New Zealand❤
Love your wise comment about the pendulum, Kathy! 😊
I smiled when I saw you place a doily under the plant on your bedroom dresser. My Mom was talented at crocheting & I scooped up some of the doilies she made when my siblings & I were clearing out her home. I have different sizes & use them around the house, & they make me happy. My little grandson even uses some of them for play e.g. as blankets for little dolls & as a dishcloth in the play kitchen. It makes me smile every time I see him using them. I think his great-grandma, who never got to meet him, would be happy, too.
I love using handmade things from previous generations in my home. These doilies are from my mom's friends mom who made them when she was young. It just feels good to be able to use something that someone put a lot of time and energy into making. =)
I also identify with “simplified” and “clutter free” 😊❤
Forty-two years ago, when I wanted to mill my own flour for bread baking, there were no electric home mills. My husband got an old motor from somewhere, mounted it on a board and connected it to an old hand-grinder. The flour ended up being far too course to use. It was extremely noisy and took forever. The technology was just not ready for the lifestyle we wanted to live.
At present, and for the last 20 years, I do not bake anything with flour at all, and I eat very little food made with flour. I feel healthier this way. But I admire your desire to fix healthy food for yourself and your family. I think it is a worthy ambition.
I live in south Florida where there are never any signs of fall (except in the decor stores!). In a few months we will realize that the weather is cooler. That’s about all that happens. But every solstice and equinox I do many chores that help me feel that a new season is beginning: Wash and wax and vacuum my car. Clean the headlights of their “cataracts.” Wash all sofa pillow covers and slipcover. Wash mattress protector and mattress pad. Clean ceiling fan blades. Oil my cutting boards. Replace my AC filter. Wash all windows. Replace toothbrush. Deep clean certain spots that don’t get regular attention like inside cupboards. Shampoo my hairbrushes. These are all things that should be done occasionally, but you never remember when you did them last. Following my seasonal chore schedule I always know when I did them last and when it is time to do them again. I start each new season with a very clean house.
I live in an apartment now so I have no yard or garden to maintain. That eliminates many chores I used to do outside.
Edit: I forgot some things. Clean/replace all filters in the vacuum cleaner. Wash insides of vacuum cleaner. Clean out clothes dryer vent. I’ll probably think of more as the week goes on. I like to do everything ahead of the solstice.
Thank you for sharing your seasonal cleaning schedule with us! That has given me some great ideas on what I can add to my list of things to do this fall. =) Washing the mattress pad is something I plan to do today. I hope you have a nice weekend.
I love your mom’s pumpkin water color painting!
Your hair! 😍 And I'm LOVING all of the changes! I think "minimalist" was such a buzz word a few years ago, that we all decided to get rid of everything, but having a cozy, curated home that's free of clutter is definitely the way to go!
Love love love your mum’s pumpkin picture...just perfect 🥰
Thanks so much 😊 I tell her.
@@shannontorrens1 😃🥰
Yes, Clutter free and simplified! My home is tidy, but I know there are things that could still go, and I would like to live a clutter free simple life.
I think it's all about balance in our homes. Cozy and clutter-free makes a home inviting =)
The pumpkin painting looks so cute on the shelf with the plant and all❤
Thank you! I really like how that area turned out.
I identify with simple living, though I am still decluttering 41+ years of marriage accumulation 😅 I have pulled out the seasonal pillow covers, throw blankets and copper/brass decor to warm and cozy up the house for fall-Thanksgiving, it’s just small touches that welcomes the change of seasons but not like the seasons threw up in my house, just a few changes to add to my normal, year round decor. I have always tried to be the less is more type of person but marriage, kids and just daily living has always made the “simplified” a challenge. Pillow covers are my favorite change ups- I have a Spring/Summer decor bin and one for Fall/Thanksgiving bin (we will not speak of the Christmas-St. Pats day binS!) and all the pillow covers are in the appropriate seasonal bins and I have been ruthless about keeping just one tote bin each for Easter-Thanksgiving decor. We are working on letting go of many decor and art that we just haven’t rotated like we use to, our adult children get first dibs on stuff like that before we donate it.
I have always made all of our meals at home, even working full time - I just prefer knowing what is in my food. And a few years back (maybe 5???) I switched to making everything from scratch, and I do mean everything - even salad dressings and sauces, and it makes a noticeable difference in health. Plus I find it very satisfying to make everything myself. Agree with the simplify and declutter. I like a simple, clean home, but I like it to feel warm and comfy too, which I think your home does.
Yes to clutter free and simplified!
Yay!
WOW! How your beautiful garden has grown! Can't wait to see the finished side garden. I don't decorate our home, not even for Christmas. I didn't even know that home milling was/is a thing, very interesting. The banana cake and muffins looked yummy; it was funny to see how surprised you were that they tasted so good. Keep going with the home cooking. Good night, all. Goldie. X
Thank you so much! Whenever I experiment with a recipe, I am always surprised when it turns out well. I had switched out some ingredients, so that is why I was surprised it tasted good. We are working on the side yard this week so that before and after video will be coming out soon! I hope you have a nice day.
This was such a blessing to watch , thank you Shannon ! I enjoy changing seasonal decor so much , the refresh is a great feeling ! 🌿 Fall is so cozy . 😊 that is really nice your boys enjoy seeing it too especially your oldest to comment on how he enjoys it ! Your doing it right when your home makes your family feel good ! Watching you grind wheat , enjoy a new recipe and homemaking does my heart good as it’s encouraging to see and know other women love homemaking like I do ! 🌿🌸😊 your a blessing ! 🌿
Your artwork is beautiful, did not realize your mom paints as well ! Her pumpkin painting is beautiful! 🎃
I can really relate to the shift from minimalism to simple living/clutter free!
That wreath on the door is so pretty. And the new old vase is a perfect addition for fall decor. It is the little things that can make a big difference without being too much added clutter. Pillow covers are a perfect example. And the picture frame with switching out the art. I have a couple animal figurines (don't judge😉) that I put tiny knitted scarves on for winter. (It entertains me😁). Small things that don't add too much but makes me happy.
We have the same flour mill. I don't fret too much about making a perfect loaf. they usually turn our tasting good. Except the one time I forgot the yeast and I had a brick in the bread machine.😄
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Karen, Its funny you mention a brick in the bread machine because my first attempt at trying the fresh milled flour resulted in the same brick loaf over here too. My husband was laughing saying how terrible it smelled. I must have forgotten an ingredient, but it gave us a good laugh.
My favorite definition of minimalism is: "The intentional promotion of the things we love most or hold dear, and the removal of anything that distracts from it." It is from Joshua Becker. That said, I think that is what most of us are doing, making our home cozy just to suit us, and not holding onto extra things ( clutter ) when we do not value them❤
I understand about throwing out titles; they often hold too much weight and we do not need to be tied down or locked into any "one" thing as we are growing in wisdom, if that makes sense. Lovely cozy spaces you have created! I often think if someone came into our home, they might judge it too bland in color and/or aesthetic, but I tell myself it does not matter what other prople think, our homes should suit ((our)) families & I enjoy a lot of white & beige & grey😊🤗🍁🍂💮
We are down to high of 80 most days now, with a few days lower and some, a bit higher. Bought a pretty burgundy❤ mum for 4.99 at Aldi & put out your Fall art and orange leaf Fall wreath..looking at each piece brings me JOy. Giving the front door a fresh coat of paint & baking bread today, Happy Monday!! Wow~ I did not know that milling your own flour was a thing, loved to see that in motion😊
Hello Julia, I always love reading your comments. I agree with everything you said, especially about making our home to suit our families. That is going to look different for everyone. =) I also follow Joshua Becker and like his approach to a simple life and finances. Yay for cooler weather! It's finally cooling down here too and we might even get some rain. I hope you have a wonderful week.
You too, Shannon. Your replies always brighten my day!!! Sending rain your all's way, hopefully.☔️🌧🌦 I understand it is an exciting thing when rain happens there🎉. SW MO is behind on rain here too, but Saturday we got a little, this soft fine mist that lasted all afternoon. I said to my husband, "Do we live in a rainforest?"😅
P.S. your baked goods looked SO yummy. Going to check out "Oh She Glows."
I'm not a minimalist but I do enjoy simplified and identify more with it. Minimal just doesn't feel homey which is what I'm after. The bits you added gave your home a more homey touch❤
Thank you so much! I hope you are doing well.
Minimalism can absolutely feel homey - perhaps you're thinking of the minimalist decor style? If so, this is different from the minimalist philosophy. IIRC Shannon made a video on that a while back, too.
@@MrGrumpyGills I agree it just matters how minimal you want your space to feel. I just feel like for me lately I wouldn’t walk into my house and say wow this is minimalist. But compared to most homes I see in real life our home is very minimal. I love the concept of minimalism but I don’t really feel like talking or thinking about anymore. ❤️
I agree, I don't feel the word minimalize works for me but I have decluttered a lot out of my home and I embrace the more openness and less claustrophobic feel of the place, I surround the area with more open, lighter shelves that hold only the most loved objects and when things start to bother me or I get sick of looking at them I either tuck them away and bring out something else or get rid of them altogether. I think rotating things and moving furniture around makes it feel different and new.
Hi Shannon, thank you for this inspirational video 🙏 My husband and I live in a small appartment in the East Side of the Netherlands. We live clutterfree and simplified for a long time now, since we moved to this home and we love it. Now our balcony has to be made ready for the fall and winter. We can have lots of rain and wind here ☺ Tomorrow I will start with it. In my home I not really change seasonal things, but candles lights, cosing our curtains and warm plaids are making it a bit warmer 🫂 Thanks for being you, you have a great mind and sweet family. Bye bye, Yo ⚘🌺🇳🇱🌼
Thank you for sharing how you get ready for the colder season =) It sounds cozy where you live. =)
Today’s video was enjoyable to watch. It made me feel like “Fall is in the air” even though it is still soooo warm where we live. And the muffins look yummy!
I'm so glad! When I filmed this it was 109 where we live LOL. But thankfully, the temps dropped, and it's actually cool today. I hope you are doing well and the weather cools down for you soon.
I love the term cozy minimalist for myself. So many get the terms minimalism and minimalist design esthetic confused. I'm a minimalist, but do not like the cold design style. The good news is you don't have to to be a minimalist. One reason I love your channel.
it all looks so cozy ❤
I love your kitchen curtains 😊
I do also paint with watercolors, and for many years I have a frame hanging where I can change Art as I want to.
Wishing you a wonderful Fall 🙋🏻♀️😘🌼🐭
Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful fall too. =)
Working toward simplified and less stuff. You and your mom have helped. Your mom brings so much humor into your videos.
Love the way your home looks all ready for fall!❤
Thank you!
I’m a minimalist, so I’m sorry to hear you’re dropping the “label” because that was why I subscribed to your channel. I loved watching you and mom declutter and Swedish death clean, etc. Having said that, I’m not an extremist, so I love your “controversial “ thrift store vase and that painting of the pumpkins. 😊 Best to you and to your lovely family.
Thank you! Nothing is changing besides me not feeling trapped by that word. LOL. We will still be decluttering when necessary and keeping our home clutter-free. Maybe that is what I am too, just not an extremist. =) I hope you are doing well.
It’s just a word used to describe but it isn’t the only word used to describe being minimal it’s more that you’re not lacking anything because you have what you actually need
Love the color if your Brooklinen Sheets.
They are so pretty in real life! =) I hope you are having a good Sunday.
Yes! Clutter free and simplified is definitely the way I live. I also like to do a fall reset…declutter and clean before the cold comes..makes for a more cozy indoor time
I think that fall is the perfect time to reset for the colder weather. =) I hope you are doing well.
Shannon, your fall decor does make your home feel cozy and lovely.❤
Hey Shannon, I l ove yours & your mums autumnal art ❤️ it really adds something to the space & makes it look extra cosy 🥰
I loved your video. I think the word simplified describes you the best. Love your home ❤
Your healthy treats look delicious! Just a warning that you have to start keeping the recipes and making them in bulk. You’ll be amazed at how much teenage boys and their friends eat and it’s pretty constant. Your plants look great. I have a pretty fall little arrangement on my dining room table too.
Thank you! That is a great tip about baking in bulk. I am already seeing how quickly the food disappears.
You've motivated me to update my house for the fall season. This something we never do.
I'm so glad! I hope you have a great weekend.
Your humility is truly admirable and loveable.
Glad to see you ended up with the vase that your Mom liked 😊
I have used the words simplify and clutter free instead of minimalist for a while now. I am not as strict as I was before but I had to start There to now be able to declutter and be more intentional. I love your cozy vibe. It is inspiring.
Thank you! I hope you are having a good weekend. =)
Hi Shannon, I have been using that same mill for years now. I love it because you never run out of flour and the whole wheat flour is always fresh. I have been converting my recipes to whole wheat as well. Sometimes I still add some white flour depending what I am making but cookies I make are all whole wheat. I feel we are getting a healthier version of a treat. Every little change helps. I like the fall pics you changed to. Nice idea and simple. Hope you are having a good day.
Thank you! I agree every little change helps. I can't wait to experiment with some cookies. I hope you have a nice day. =)
Love the Fall decor and, especially the modified approach to simplified. I've recently decided I want my home and life to be simplified, refined, and functional. To me, this makes a home that is peaceful, lovely, and welcoming. Looking forward to seeing more of how this plays out for you and your family.
Yay.... New video makes for a perfect Sunday ❤😂
Yay! Thank you for being here! I hope you have a relaxing Sunday. =)
Beautiful reset Shannon.❤❤❤
Hi Shannon, always enjoy seeing your Sunday morning videos! I agree with you that I identify more with the terms clutter free and simple rather than minimalism. Minimalism seems to have so many connotations since it's such a popular term. I love making food from scratch! I used to do it a lot more when my kids were really young, but once they hit school age we got so busy! We still eat a lot of whole foods and I do cook from scratch, but I stopped making things like bread products and crackers. I would love to get back into that! I think I am still working on finding the balance of having enough decor to make my home feel cozy but not too much. Your home looks so cozy for fall! Thanks for sharing!💖
Thank you Joy! I agree; clutter-free and simple are words I really identify with. I think having the word minimalism in my head made me always feel guilty if I decided I wanted to try something new or switch things around in my wardrobe. I still love minimalism and try to apply it to not be wasteful or have too much, but it feels like a relief to not have to think about our home being minimal. Like you said, it's a balance. =)
I love how you just add these pops of color and little themed items here and there and it just changes the look for the season. 👏🏻🥰 But yet not too many items you have to worry about storing and taking up lots of space.
Thank you so much! I hope you are doing well. =)
I love and appreciate your channel so much❤ it’s fall where we are me and hubby have just moved into our townhouse and loving the simplicity of this life. Thanks for enjoyable, sincere and pure videos🙏
Thank you! I hope you are having a good weekend.
I glad you have found a happy medium in your home decor, I’m not a fan of minimalist homes they are usually soulless and un-inviting, I just swap out a few items with the seasons and it looks refreshed.
Yes, I consider myself "simplified" and I'm always working on being clutter free. I love decorating seasonally and I have several buckets of seasonal items - not very minimal. Also, I know nothing about making your own flour so I'm looking forward to following along on your cooking journey 😀
Thank you for being here! I will share what I learn on my flour journey =) It should be interesting lol.
It’s funny, I’m in my late 60’s and grew up with my mama cooking everything homemade…from scratch! Now, people are trying to get back to that👏🏻👏🏻. I make zucchini bread with pineapple and nuts added…yummy!!
Thank you for the video! I don't like the term minimalism very much either. I am exited to se a video of you all working on the sidewalk in the back yard.
I like the vase a lot and good deal on the thrifting!!! Its always a wonderful way to do decor I have a thrifted, gifted or free theme going in my home....only things I have ever bought as 1st time owner are sofas rugs and mattresses, try to do everything else 2nd hand
Clutter free & simple…perfect!
Everything looks wonderful 🎉
I've always liked the word "streamlined" for all aspects of life.
@@bearisland55 I love that! Thank you for sharing ❤️
I love how you decorate your house ❤
It’s so cozy
Looking forward to see your side yard
Love your channel Shannon
I’ve learned a lot from you ❤
Thank you so much!!
Your fall decor is beautiful!!! I also like the new description of your home style. Good job! 😊
I’ve changed to more simplified in some rooms as I loved the plants idea ! Your mom’s watercolour is impressive ❤️love to watch your vids ! Thanks Shannon 💕
Thank you so much!!
Really pretty blue dress - great color on you.
Good for you on the new recipes you are trying out!!!
Thank you! It's a learning experience. =)
Hi Shannon! You're home looks so stylish, cozy, and organized. I love your fall decor. 🥰
Hi Shannon…I enjoyed your video! I really would like to mill my own flour as well. Thanks for sharing your experience. As far as Fall, I also like to “Fall Clean”. I am currently giving all the trim inside a paint refresh because it really needs it! Baseboards and inside doors. I will add fall decor and I also change pillow covers for fall. I learned this trick a couple of years ago and love just storing the covers and reusing the insides. Great hack. ❤
Hello, I hope you are having a great weekend. I think we need to make "fall cleaning" a thing . =)
The Oh she glows, cook books are awesome. The granola recipe is really good too. Enjoy your adventure in scratch cooking.
Thank you! I have loved her recipes for years. I started following her blog way back in 2009! I hope you are doing well.
You have a beautiful cosy family home ❤
Love that Fall Wreath!
Shannon you have made a lovely home
Shannon, everything looks just so lovely! All the touches you added are just beautiful! Hope you have a wonderful week! ❤️🤗
Thank you! You too!
I’ve been a long time viewer but first time commenting. I just have to say I love that you said your home is clutter free and not so much minimal. This is how I feel about my home and can sometimes feel bad watching minimalist channels. I’ve also always loved that you share your lived in home that is unique to your family. You are inspiring and I admire that you’re not just keeping up with trends!
Thank you so much!! I feel we are somewhat minimal, but I don't feel like talking about that anymore since I think most people, myself included, can relate to a simplified home that functions well. =) I also watch minimal content once in a while and think oh I am not minimal enough and I just want to drop that feeling from my life.
You’re looking very fit! Your fall decor is cozy and classy! Happy fall from Texas!
Thank you!
I think you deserve to have a little decor to make you happy, even if the decor needs to be moved for homework and fun crafts
Simplified and clutter free, but warm and cozy is a perfect way to describe your beautiful home! Love the pops of color and how they change with the seasons. I use that cookbook, too, and would love to hear/read about your adventures with the mill. I really enjoy your channel and family. Thank you.
Simplified. Perfect!
Hi Shannon
It’s been a while, since ive said hi, it’s your long time viewers in the Adelaide Hills South Australia.
I am very much in the same place, I moved away from the term minimalist some time ago and it enabled me tot else and embrace my families needs and style. I am striving for cozy and practical and simple also.
I am really interested in doing more of my own cooking particularly for snacks just like you, I would love to mill my own flour, something to save up for. Hope your all well, your hair is so beautiful by the way ❤❤
Thank you for being here! Cozy, practical, and simple sums it up really well ❤❤❤
Hi There! I love your fall decor and the baked goods you made look delicious!!! I just put out my fall decor which consists of some ceramic and wood pumpkins along with a handmade felt pumpkin my daughter made. My son gave me a cute ceramic squirrel for my birthday (yesterday) that also makes a great item for this time of year. Then my daughter gave me a few decorative mushrooms that I put out. It’s fun to have things that everyone can enjoy. Thanks for another great video. I ordered the flameless taper candles on your Amazon list so I’m excited to use those also. Have a wonderful week! 🧡🧡😊😊🐦🐦
Oh and I don’t bake but my daughter made me some delicious molasses cookies as a birthday gift. She uses the same recipe my mom used when I was a kid 40 years ago.
Your home sounds cozy and inviting! I love those taper candles. They look real when they are lit up at night. The best part is I have them set to come on around 6pm every night which makes our home feel really cozy. I hope you are having a nice weekend.
🍁 Everything looks really nice!
I love that you keep it simple but make it special for your kids. My kid loves to help me decorate for Autumn and Christmas.
I definitely relate as I am clutter free & simplified but not a minimalist. I also love organization systems to keep things tidy. Our Fall decorating is pretty simple with seasonal tablecloths for the dining table & a front door wreath that is changed out for the seasons. Your home looks cozy with the fall decor!
I LOVE it! Your videos are always so good to watch. I absolutely love the pumpkin art work and want to purchase one. Thanks for sharing what you're doing. I appreciate it. :)
Thank you so much!
I love that vase you bought from the thrift store....the colour is amazing....love the tour!
Thank you! 😊
Happy Sunday, Shannon! Love your fall reset & love simplicity!
I only made 2 fall tablescapes & 1 wreath because I also need that artistic outlet! 🍁🌻
Hello, I hope your Sunday is going well. Yes! It's so fun to get creative with decor even if it's only for a limited time. =)
Your mom is a really good artist
Simple and clutter free is the way to go. Like you I like pops of color as painting walls to change things up is too labor intensive. 🙃
I don’t have decent light for live plants so have several life-like silk plants…that way I also don’t have to worry about watering them.😉 WOW! The candles come on by themselves in the evening? So cool! 😍Thank you for your post.
I am working towards minimalist in my home.
But there is just the 2 of us in our late 70s.
You already know that I love your videos and I really like the new cozy vibe for fall. I use a lot of pillow covers too❣️
I love all of the simple fall decor. What a great find on the thrift store items. I love that orange basket. Everything looks great, Shannon!! I just updated my home, too, with some simple fall items. Just a few touches here and there. I can't wait to see the updates with your side garden. 😊
You and your moms art are so beautiful 😊❤️
Love hearing all your plans . The fall pictures are a great touch.
Thank you so much!
Everything is beautiful n so cozy as always! 👏👏👏💞🪴🍁🍂
Hi Shannon, pillow covers what a great idea. I don't know how I'm going to decorate yet. God bless you and your family. 🪴🧡🦋
Love how you change your decor for fall.
Thank you!
I am so excited for you to get into the fresh milled flour! It's new to me, also, and I can never buy bread from the store again!
Nice video as usual also u are looking beautiful in black dress❤❤
I really like how eclectic your home is - especially with your own artwork - nice personal style and it's fun to see it evolve and develop. So much nicer than the beige, grey deor that looks like every other place on the internet. I also like the new pillow cushions - look crisp and sunny like fall. BTW, I think your new vase is actually a candle holder, since the opening is fairly shallow?
Love your decor style! I have cut back on my decorating. I pretty much only decorate for Xmas. I am not good at it and just get stressed out with too many decorations. ❤
Shannon, how do you include exercise in your days? Do you go to a gym? Do you have weights or resistance bands at home? You are in such great shape and look strong.
Thank you! I am actually trying to figure out how to add more exercise to my life. Right now, I just work in the yard and walk, but I am going to be trying out rebounding. =)
Your videos are just so relaxing to watch and useful info. Thanks ❤
I have wanted to learn about milling flour
Yay! We can learn together. I have just started on this journey and so far there is a little learning curve but it's pretty easy. =)
Haven't been here in a while. Loving the back yard. It is gorgeous.
Thank you for being here! I hope you are having a nice weekend.
😊
I change out my pillow covers as well! 2 of my pillows on my couch are actually Xmas pillows with covers on them!
I love that! It's such an easy way to decorate without having to store a bunch of pillows. =)
Now, I want to change my decor! LOL! I have one bin with my fall stuff in it. Your house looks amazing!
Thank you!! 😊 I hope you are doing well.
🍁🍁🍁
Beautiful house! Your hair is beautiful! Do you put anything in it to look so soft , and not fuzzy??
Thank you! I use gel and then a diffuser to dry it or let it air dry. =)

Healthy gel? I've tried them all!!!😅
Your Hair looks curlier than usual and this style is very becoming on you.❤
I can't believe you brought the MUSHROOM home?? Your killin me ugh
