  • In this video i will be restoring a vintage scale made by Salter. I acquired this from a gentleman that remembered his mother using it on their farm to weight the turkeys.
    As you will see the most tiresome part was sanding all the pitting. This took me about 4 hours to complete.
    I hope you enjoy the video

    Exceptional work, particularly on the pitted metal.

    Really awesome work. Watching all of your other videos right now. I think what sets you apart from other restoration channels is your attention to detail. Keep it up!

    What about calibration?

    Tip: To get into places like those springs (if you don't have an ultrasonic cleaner), use shotgun cleaning brushes. They come in nylon, bronze and stainless steel. 16 or 20 gauge looks like they would be good for those springs.
    Nice restoration!

    Got one of these at an auto jumble. I like the needle zeroing adjuster.

    What was the date on the lead weights and measures seal?

    Really nice job, lots of effort paid off amazingly. May be a stupid question, but was the original colour dark blue or does that paint stripper always turn that colour?

    • @mytinyworkshop1213

      The original was black. I was surprised to see it turn blue.

    Great work, especially on that pitted metal.
    I would suggest, however, that you do a pH test on that vinegar, since it doesn't seem to be doing a very good job. Keep in mind that the reaction doesn't just remove rust; it turns the "vinegar" into water with an iron acetate salt suspension.

    • @Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co
      @Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co 4 роки тому

      If you're interested, the reaction is 3CH3COOH+FeOOH⟶Fe(CH3COO)3+2H2O

    • @mytinyworkshop1213
      @mytinyworkshop1213  4 роки тому

      The vinegar is working fine. It doesn’t remove the rust it loosens it.

    Sand blasting and good thickness of paint would have saved a lot of labour. Nice job though.

    There was a 2 second time delay between the audio and visual in this video - had to mute it as it sounded too weird for me 🤨 😣

    Why remove the original paint? It looked to be in good contition and didn't come off on the wire wheel.
    Original Paint is always worth more.

      Steve Huffman I seem to recall that these scales (often used for weighing meat) were japanned rather than painted.

    It really came out well ... taking the extra time to deal with the pitting really makes a huge impact on the final outcome. Excellent work as usual.

      There is no means to calibrate that model. Springs are made to a specific strength and that's it.
