Thank you for putting the teams in the top right. I was interested in your takes, and it made it a lot easier to find my favorite team and then watch the rest of the video. That courtesy alone is worth a sub
12:36 Iván Herrera in the top 10! If he can improve his pop time to catch more would-be base stealers while remaining a comfortably above average hitter, he'll be a real difference-maker that's under team control for the next 5 seasons.
The only thing I would change is not to be so quick on the trigger to put the young players in front of the Vets. Especially Sal Perez at 12 man that’s just egregious lol
You over rely on stats imo, especially framing. Framing is valuable but it’s also a volatile year year to year stat that is not solely reliant on the catcher.
It is a little volatile, but not enough for it to hurt the stat's value significantly. There are countless examples of great framers who stay great framers for multiple years: Patrick Bailey, Cal Raleigh, Austin Hedges, Jose Trevino, Christian Vazquez, Sean Murphy, and so on. There is also the opposite. People like Will Smith, who has been below average framing for 5 years in a row. All stats have their weaknesses, and if I thought framing was the best stat ever, Patrick Bailey would easily be number 1.
Absolutely hyped for sophmore year Austin Wells. Dude was awesome, despite the fact that he didn't get consistent playing time until Trevino went down with an injury. Sure, he didn't end the season that great - but dude was clearly just gassed and out of steam by the end. Can't really critique him for that, he ended up playing all the time as a catcher. That takes a lot. But dude's got the chops to be an absolute stud.
Finally someone who knows how to rank catchers and for the most part i think you did a great job. Would i tweak it? yes, Rutchman is to high for the year he just had but he should be great for a long time so no big deal. Also i think Kirk should be higher but 8-9-10 on this list I feel are so close in many ways, that they maybe interchangeable. Speaking of 8-9-10 you refer to both Yainer Diaz and Ivan Herrera as young catchers but Kirk is actually between them in age (younger than Diaz but older than Herrera)
As a giants fan, baileys defense def top 10, through the first half of the season you could for sure make a case for 3rd but overall, with his second half cooldown, im not sure he cracks the top 5 or beats out adley
I would put Ivan Herrera lower due to the sample size. Also putting Salvy who was comparable on offense, better on defense, and proven in sample size below him makes no sense
Its more about the aging curve for the difference there. Since this list is predictive, it would be quite the mistake to not take that into account. There is no reason to believe that Salvy will get any better given his age, and the opposite for Herrera. I also forgot to mention that Herrera has been great in the minors (.830 OPS in his MiLB career). Herrera's position in the rankings is a little bit of a projection on my part just because he looks very advanced offensively for a catcher that is only 24 years old.
His defense really scares me, and the offense has gotten worse every single year. Catching is a defensive oriented position, and if the offesne continues to slip his value is going to go down with it.
Subjectively, I'm putting Patrick Bailey #1. There is no other catcher in the league I'd rather have. It's not even close in my mind. Objectively Cal and Contreras are better but for how I value things, I'd pass on them. I'd legitimately trade multiple top 50 prospects for Bailey if he could be extended for a reasonable rate
@agg8355 even if he was a literally automatic out with a 0 on base percentage I'm still taking him above anyone else. No other player in the sport impacts a roster as much as he does by making 50% of its members better.
As a Giants fan I couldn't be happier with Bailey defensively, but offensively he is BAD... He's a hole in the lineup... I can't rate him in the top 10 with the bat as bad as it is... if he could improve to league avg hitting he would be #1... but he's not league avg hitting, he's not even close... I'm hoping he gets better with the bat, like I said I would be ok with league avg hitting, but as far below avg as he is offensively he's a problem in the lineup...
Ranking Connor Wong as #25 is ridiculous, especially when coming into the All-star break, he was not only the highest average catcher, but also one of the highest average player in all MLB🤯 Metrics don’t tell the whole story. Not sure what his metrics say about him throwing out runners, but he’s had multiple clutch times he’s thrown out runners. He’s even made a specific play last year to throw out a guy at first on a bunt that imo only a few catchers in the game could make. There was actually even a Pass Ball that seemed specifically planned to get a runner out! It went over Wong’s head, went straight back to him, and he got the runner out at home I think it was. It was very risky, but it worked! He came up as a second baseman, but with the help of Jason Varitek, he has potential to be one of the top 10 catchers in the game imo. Even from 2023-2024, he’s improved greatly.
Framing is currently THE most important thing a catcher can bring to the table on the defensive side of things. It effects the outcome of a game tremendously... Respectfully, I can't agree with you until roboumps is fully implemented.
I disagree with your first part, but 100% agree with the second part of your comment. As long as there's human umps making calls it's very very valuable
@zachleininger4072 a strike can get called every pitch, it's not possible for a runner to get thrown out every pitch. That alone makes framing SIGNIFICANTLY more valuable
William Contreras Cal Raleigh Adley Rutschman Patrick Bailey Will Smith Yainer Diaz Gabriel Moreno Alejandro Kirk Austin Wells Francisco Alvarez Salvador Perez JT Realmuto Tyler Stephenson Ryan Jeffers Jake Rogers Iván Herrera Shea Langeliers Sean Murphy Logan O'Hoppe Joey Bart Bo Naylor Connor Wong Jacob Stallings Danny Jansen Jonah Heim Miguel Amaya Nick Fortes Luis Campusano Keibert Ruiz Korey Lee
Raleigh stunk in 2022? Where he had 27 HRs and a 122 WRC+ and 4.2 fWAR? The same year Contreras was still a part time player getting only 376 ABs and finished with 2 fWAR? Or were you talking about the next season when Cal had 30 HRs and finished with 4.3 fWAR?
Cal Raleigh is too low
He’s gonna fall off a cliff in the next 2 years
Would like but it’s at 69

To be fair this video is a ranking based on stats

patrick bailey had a pretty good first half. but the wheels fell off
you see this is the issue in stats because salvy is very obviously better than 12
lol
I am surprised that you did not put Hunter Goodman or Drew Romo for the Rockies. Jacob Stallings will probably DH mostly as my guess for this year.

Would it be possible you can also show your previous year ranking?
Sean Murphy is way too high and Perez is too low (because as a catcher he was a great hitter and decent catcher)
A lot of those weren't so much good framing as bad umpiring.
Raleigh is my Strat-O catcher. Wooooo DIG DUMPER
As a Phillies fan it’s getting annoying when the crew still calls J.T the best catcher in baseball
He’s good don’t get me wrong but not even top 5

cant have will smith under a guy who played less than 100 games just because he had a bad second half

Gabi 100 times better than will snith

Agreed. Patrick Bailey is ridiculous. If he hits at an OPS+ 100, he’ll be #1 in this list soon.

Will smith is a top 5 catcher.
Are you only considering 2024 stats?
Hell yeah Jake Rogers respect
go mariners
I’m a simple man, if you speak nicely about Gabriel Moreno I subscribe.
Psst...there's no such thing as someone in the 100th percentile. The highest is 99th (means of 100 randomly chosen players, would have 99 below them).
100th percentile is the maximum
@@Wilytics Doesn't work that way, sorry. Maximum is 99th percentile.
Cal Raleigh better be one before I watch this video
Bro Jake Rogers has a bat made of glass

Dawg, you’re getting a little out of hand with the obscure stats that no one knows. At LEAST add ops+ or something
Learn them nothing is that complicated to understand
@ nah
wRC+ is basically the same as OPS+, but I will try to explain them more in the future rankings
Framing is overrated imo. It'll soon be completely irrelevant once there are robo umps anyway.
