Great video! Might I add the increase of soccer’s popularity with New York City FC and the (Metro Stars) New York RedBulls. It would’ve been neat to highlight the NY Cosmo’s and how that changed into the hugely growing soccer scene in the NYC area
At first you would think why do they complain about losing teams with haven't the Yankees. But after understanding Burros and loyalty with fans within Burros like the Bronx Brooklyn and Long Island. So I could see a push for one more team in Brooklyn.
on the money. all my friends who are Yankee fans, root for the Giants. The mets fans root for the Jets. all are Knicks fans tho. nobody gives a shit about Brooklyn Nets lol.
Note: There is a sizable group of ex-whaler fans who are Devils fans. SW CT is essentially part of the NY area so when the Whale ceased to exist, we couldn't become Ranger Fans because the rivalry was too heated and what's the point of being an Islander fan if you're not from LI. So alot of us became Devils Fans. They were on our local TV and the small city vibe was similar to the Hartford Whalers. Plus they won Cups and hate the Rangers as much as we did. It all worked out.
And the ones on the eastern side of the state shifted their fandom to the Bruins. Least most of the people I knew did. And I think that was largely due to them being Boston fans for the other 3 sports as opposed to NY fans. In addition to their proximity to the former of course
@@chicodalianis8004 that's true, good point. I didn't want to mention it as my blurb was getting a little too big but I remember during that time the Islanders were very close to moving as well . I think most of us didn't wanted to go through that again 😭
A lot of SW CT people also became NY football Giants fans when they played at the Yale Bowl. The MTA now runs direct trains to Penn Station from New Haven on Giants game days.
The teams are made up of whoever the team owners pay for. The players have no loyalty to the city of their team, they’re completely disconnected from the cities they represent, they move from city to city at the drop of a dime.
he also doesn't mention the New York Red Bulls or New York City FC, the former in New Jersey, the latter in New York (the only two football teams in that area aside from D.C. and New England)
Compared to elsewhere around the world, the origins of professional athletics in the US/Canada is mainly rooted in the entertainment business. While much of the North American landscape did start out with amateur clubs, many saw the opportunity to organize it and turn it into a financial opportunity. Sell a product, entertain people, make money off of it. Certain business metrics go into it, and if the owners decide it’s in the best interest of the league from a business standpoint to move the team, they’ll do it. This is in contrast to the sports world outside where the majority of sports has stayed true to the club origins of teams around the world. They kept it about the game, the club, the traditions, and the identity of the surrounding community. That being said, these videos may make it sound like teams are moving all the time at a moment’s notice, but obviously saying a team has moved years after the fact is a much quicker process than a team actually moving; it’s a complicated matter on why a team would move, and most leagues understand it’s a very drastic measure that they are very reluctant to take given the impact it could have on a team’s current community.
I am a 65 year old Mets/Giants/Knicks fan. My dad was a fan of the baseball and football Giants. When his baseball team moved to SF, he followed them in the sports pages and by watching Mets games on TV, because he was an NL guy who didn’t care about the Yankees and the AL. He rooted for the Mets to knock off the Giants rivals because they were an expansion team and no threat to contend for the pennant. So I grew up watching the Mets and became a Mets fan. I became a football Giants fan because my dad was and we watched games on TV or listened to Marty Glickman call the games on the radio when NFL home games were blacked out.
Being born and raised in New Jersey and living in Brooklyn and now Queens the past ten plus years, I am a Giants, Devils, Nets, and Mets fan. I have never met another person that is a fan of that same exact combination.
🚨 [NOT FORCING] 🚨 Bro, Jesus changed my life. He was there for me when i was at my lowest moment. He loved you so much that he died for us on the cross. God loves you so much. Would you like to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and start following him today? But remember, I'm NOT forcing you to do this. It's YOUR decision. I'm just spreading the gospel. 😅
My dad is a fan of the Giants Devils and Mets. He was never too big on basketball, but we saw a few Knicks games when I was younger. I've never seen anyone like that before either though lol
I believe we are a rare breed. I too, am from Jersey (Hoboken) with allegiance with the Giants, Mets, and the Devils. Used to follow the Nets as well until they dismantled the early 2000's teams and moved.
@@NJGuy1973 that was only bc they didn't have a place to play at in NY. They were supposed to be the ABA team for NY originally so no it' isn't a nitpick
As someone who lives on Long Island in Nassau County. I live and breathe the Islanders as well as Long Island, even though I was born in Stamford CT. The Hartford Whalers had already moved to North Carolina long before I was born. My family moved back to Long Island in 2008 and in 2011, I took the Islanders as my team even though the Rangers were much better at that time. I had a much older grandfather than most people and he was always a Yankees fan. He saw almost every legendary player the team has had over the decades. He got to see Aaron Judge burst onto the scene in 2017. The Rangers were in their infancy when he was growing up in NYC but he was never a hockey guy. He and my grandmother died from covid in March 2020 just 24 hours apart. He always watched the Yankees on TV and he always wore a Yankees hat. When he was a kid, he always listened to games on the radio because television didn’t become mainstream until he was in his 30’s. He played stick ball with other kids his age on city streets during the darkest days of the Great Depression and is a Korean War veteran. I still miss my grandparents a lot even five years later and losing them so quickly was traumatic for my family. Me personally, I’m also a Giants and Knicks fan but I’m not nearly as invested into those two teams as I am with the Islanders. Hockey is my favorite sport and as soon as news breaks within the NHL, I know what happened almost immediately.
I'm from Estonia. Father took me to a New York Rangers game since it was his childhood dream (he also lived in Manhattan & South Beach Miami for around 4-5 years). Our number one team is the New York Rangers. Second is Knicks, because basketball is very popular in Estonia. Third and fourth place is Yankees/Giants. But he also likes Dodgers, Dolphins and Heat, so those three are our "second teams". Last years World Series was his dream World Series :D
I'm a NY sports fan from Long Island who is a diehard Mets fan and favors the Jets, Rangers and Knicks. However, I am not one who hates the other franchises and will grudgingly root for the Yankees and Giants when they make the postseason. I actually used to root for the Islanders in the 70s because I grew up close to the Coliseum. I was actually at the first Islander home win in their first season (my cousin actually has the game winning puck from the game). I do have one comment. I think you kind of glossed over the history of the New York Nets. They started out as an ABA team, moving to the Coliseum after it opened. This coincided with the acquisition of hometown hero Dr. J - Julius Erving, who was one of the greatest players I ever saw play live. The Nets became a powerhouse, until the ABA folded. The Nets had to pay a $3 million fee to the Knicks, who were owned by the conglomerate Gulf & Western at the time. This was because the Knicks claimed the NY-NJ market in the NBA. So the Nets moved to New Jersey and sold Dr J to the 76ers for $4 million so they could pay off the Knicks. Fans of both teams were upset because the Nets left Long Island and lost their top star, while the Knicks pocketed money instead of waiving the fee in exchange for Dr J. All Dr J did was turn a lousy 76ers franchise into a powerhouse in the 80s, while the Knicks and Nets haven't won a championship since.
A few things I’d like to add: 1) Early 1970s the ABA Nets played at the Coliseum with the Islanders before moving to Jersey with the NBA/ABA merger 2) Mid 1970s the Mets, Yankees, Jets and Giants all shared Shea for a few years during Yankee Stadium’s renovation and Giants Stadium’s construction. 3) MLS has grown here! With the Red Bulls playing in Harrison, NJ and New York City FC now playing between Yankee Stadium and Citi Field while the first ever soccer specific stadium is being built across the street from Citi! 4) The Islanders had a 5 or so year stint in Brooklyn at the Barclays before moving back to the Coliseum while UBS was under construction. 5) The women professional leagues have grown in recent years with super teams like the Liberty (located in Brooklyn) and Gotham FC (located in Harrison, NJ) winning championships recently in the WNBA and NWSL respectively. Hopefully the New York Sirens (PWHL), who share a home with the NJ Devils can say the same soon!
And I guess just to leave my alliances here… I was born into the Mets/Giants/Knicks fandoms and have been through the highs and (mostly) lows. When the Isles played in Brooklyn I started watching and rooting for them then. With NYCFC playing at Citi Field it was easy for me to follow on and watch them (aside from the fact that’d be one less team to go to Jersey for). The Liberty moving to Brooklyn helped me pay close attention to them as well. And just happening to watch Gotham FC on tv one day helped expose me to them/eventually watch them win a championship! Honestly, being a New York sports fan is great bc you have so many different options, rivalries and passionate fanbases.
They have such a weird identity crisis now. Brooklyn barely follows them and you still have a sizable amount of people rocking the old ABA, 90's and 00's gear. That Brooklyn logo is so plain and those black and white jerseys suck.
They weren't mentioned in this video so I'd also like to highlight the MLS which have 2 teams splitting NYC as well in the forms of NYCFC and NYRB/NY Red Bulls though the former is considerably more popular due to their history and also the fact that the Red Bulls never actually play in NYC but in Harrison, NJ next door. NYCFC fans are more likely to be from the Bronx or represent Queens like myself out of proximity ad before sharing the Citi Field with the Mets, NYCFC shared Yankee Stadium with the Yankees.
The MLS argument is really interesting considering RBNY has been around since 1996, and fans of soccer back then have stuck around until now. NYCFC played their first game in 2015, and has advertised themselves as being in “the city” opposed to RBNY, playing in Harrison NJ. I think this would’ve been really interesting to add considering how recent the teams have formed and fans choosing their teams much more recently.
@@tahaali9993- They left Shea after 1983, which is less than 50 years ago. And the fan base was largely set by the time they left; most Jets fans are still in Queens/Brooklyn/LI.
My fandom goes back to my grandfather. He grew up in Brooklyn in the 30s and 40s, so he was Dodgers, Giants, Rangers, Knicks. He remained a Dodger fan the rest of his life even after they left. My dad however was born in 1961, after the Dodgers were gone, and grew up mostly in Queens. So he became a Met fan while keeping his dad's other allegiances. I was born in the mid-80s in North Carolina. Since there were no local teams at the time, I grew up on my dad's core 4. I now hold the Giants and Panthers equally in my heart, but the Hurricanes have for sure put the Rangers at #2 for me. The Mets continue to be my #1 favorite franchise across all sports.
Great video; very informative. I’m Mets-Giants-Rangers-Knicks. My grandfather was a Giants (baseball) fan and supported the Mets when they came up. Passed it on to my dad, who passed it on to me.
Same here except with my Dad. He could never root for the Yankees when the Giants and Dodgers left. And the Rangers and Knicks were the only team at the time for those sports.
Exactly right. No one understands why I'm Mets AND Giants. But if you had family supporting the old NY giants baseball team, you'd almost certainly supported the Giants football team, and later the Mets when they came into the MLB. Giants fans hated Yankees, and Mets essentially replaced the Giants and Dodgers. No brainer to be Mets and Giants football fans. It's literally the natural fit to be fans of both.
Great video! I like how you mentioned at the end that the way people connect to different teams is evolving. I am a SF Giants fan from Cali, and when I learned about the Giants’ history in New York, and their connection with the Mets, I grew to appreciate the Mets, as well. I watched the majority of the 2024 Mets season, and consider myself a strong follower of the team for years to come. That history between the Giants and Mets (and even Dodgers) is something special, a dynamic that not a lot of sports teams have.
My dad is from long island. I inherited Jets, Mets, Knicks, Rangers, St. John's Basketball for college and no college football team. i've only ever been to 1 of all those teams game at their home stadium since i was born and raised in pittsburgh pa. there's a different sense i pride that i have in all of the teams. especially when you live in another city who had a passionate sports culture like Pittsburgh. it becomes engrained in your identity. although no team has won a major title or has consistent success. i wouldn't have it any different. there is a unique feeling of pride when your loyalty is consistently tested and you still decide to stick it out. Win or lose i wouldn't change any of them.
Being from Nebraska, you have some freedom to cheer for whatever team you feel like. I made online friends in high school from upstate New York who were big hockey fans and they got me into the Rangers. And after experiencing just how exciting the sport is during the 2015 playoffs, I got hooked really quick. Over Christmas break, I took my very first trip to NYC which included a stop at MSG for a Rangers game and what an amazing atmosphere it is. I need to go back someday and see a game against the Devils or Islanders so I can experience the rivalries first hand.
I would love a Midwest sports team break down. I went to school in Iowa and you’re either a cubs or cardinals fan in baseball. But in football it seemed like most people are Vikings or chiefs. It was weird
The Nets started-out in the ABA. They were briefly the New York Americans in Teaneck, NJ before relocating to the Nassau Collesium to become the New York Nets. It was during this period that they had their Doctor J-powered golden era. It was only after the ABA-NBA merger that they became the New Jersey Nets.
Mets/Devils here. Both sides of my family are/were National League fans going back a ways, so the Mets are *the* family cheering interest. Meantime, I've grown up in New Jersey and was 10 years old when the Devils won their first Stanley Cup; later, their move to Newark, right by my hometown, made me decide I wanted to follow hockey more, too, a sport most in my family don't watch as closely. I'm not a big football fan anymore, but I mostly followed the Giants; more of my family liked the Jets, but the passion for football wasn't there like it was for baseball, so my thinking on it was probably as simple as "they wear blue, and that's my favorite color". And on basketball, I've actually given both local teams a chance: child me grew up with the Ewing-era Knicks and loved them, then young adult me gave the Kidd-era Nets a chance, but I just didn't stick around with either of them thanks to their long term futility but also due to the Nets abandoning New Jersey, plus just not finding the NBA all that entertaining anymore.
@@vinceniederman Giants/Jets have nothing to do with my Devils fandom, far as I can tell; I watched all those teams for a good while. Just lost interest in the NFL, is all; had a work schedule for a few years that kept me busy on Sundays, the Giants and Jets have both been miserable for years now, and the whole thing with the NFL trying to hide what they knew about CTE was a big turn off for me. Think I also just prefer leagues where there are more games; I get the appeal of going out on Sunday to catch football somewhere with friends, but I like the daily nature of MLB and the 82 game schedule in the NHL.
I live in Southwestern Connecticut and always rooted for the Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers. Grew up about 40 mins from all 4 teams stadiums/arenas.
Wow, great video. I'm from Huntington, which is in Suffolk County on Long Island. Growing up in the '80s, I became an Islanders, Mets and Giants fan. This was probably because they were the better teams in the region at the time. It's true there are an endless amount of team combinations, especially if you include the newer leagues and sports outside of the big four leagues. I haven't lived in NY since 2004, so this video brought back some memories. My girlfriend and I were at the Piazza home run game after 9/11. That was so emotional. I don't mind the Jets, but the Yankees became annoying once they started winning all the time in the '90s and I would never root for the Rangers! Wouldn't mind the Knicks winning although I'm not a basketball fan.
Personally I’m a Mets/Knicks/Islanders. Grandparents grew up big dodgers fans and even bigger Yankees haters. My dad grew up a big Jets and Nets fan when they played on Long Island but after they moved to Jersey, they became easier to forget about.
0:10 that's pretty impressive collection of sporting teams, reminds me of Australian's "Melbourne Park" with its 25 professional sporting teams across Aussie Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Cricket, Basketball & Netball.
great video!!! we need more like this!!! I was born in Nassau County, Mineola. Long Island represent, i’m a Giants-Knicks- Yankees, and now an islanders fan!!!! thank you!!
Same with me. I grew up in Brooklyn but have lived my adult life in Boston. Because I won't change loyalties, the only Boston team I root for is the Red Sox. The only time it was a problem was the 86 World Series, I was torn. Mets fans understand a lot better than Red Sox fans how I can be a fan of both teams.
I’m became an Islanders because my dad is an Islanders fan and he became Islanders fan because when they first joined the league his dad started rooting for them because they where new and he liked rooting for an underdog
I was born in New Jersey and then moved to Europe. I’m a Devils, Jets & Nets fan. Saw a couple of Yankees games when I was a kid but never really followed baseball until 2 years ago when my sister moved to Maryland, I visited and saw some Orioles games. So Devils, Jets, Nets and Orioles 😂
You should consider adding the MLS to this. Red Bulls being the classic New York team with NYCFC being the new kids with the high rolling ownership group. Also with NYCFC sharing Yankee Stadium is an interesting twist.
I’m dead opposite, Jets, Mets, Devils. Heat are my basketball team, but only because the Nets broke my heart when they left Jersey and I was young enough that I didn’t know the negative connotation behind bandwagoning. Although this mess we are in right now with Miami isn’t what I signed up for 13 years ago, I’m too far gone to abandon them now.
@@lucassheridan8759 Oh for sure. First Heat game I went to was March 2017 at the Garden. Got tickets in the 18th row for 45$ because both teams were already out of playoff contention. Watched Knicks play w an injured KP and Rose against my Waiters and Whiteside led Heat
Yeah Mets hat is worn by their loyal fans and Yankees hats are worn by the thugs who don't give a damn about sports. Tobthem the hat is a fashion statement. Lol
My 3 brothers and father are the popular Yankees Giants combination. I became the more rare Giants Mets combination. There is a small Giants Mets cohort that exists for New Yorkers born in the late 70s like myself as we fell in love the ‘86 Giants Mets as children. With the benefit of hindsight it was probably poor decision 😂.
You need to do a video on the Chargers and LA football. Being a San Diego Chargers fan is a mess. LA and SD Chargers fans don’t like each other, Rams and Chargers fans don’t like each other, all while Raiders fans, a team that’s not even there, are the most prominent fans in LA. A video on how this disaster happened would be interesting.
@guffisstuffedsome people are such homers that if you’re teams aren’t in one state, you’re viewed as that. Don’t listen to em. You know who you’re a fan of and the reason. It’s only a problem if u hop off cause they’re losing
Cool video. I've always wondered about this. Would have love to hear about NYCFC and NY Red Bulls as well. MLS is growing rapidly. ... could also maybe be a video on its own lol. Keep up the awesome work
Giants, Nets, Islanders, and Mets. Grew up a Yankees fan until 2006. Best memories with my dad as a kid, and the Mets being successful for the first time since 2000. Been a Met fan ever since.
I was born and raised in central NJ by the Delaware River, and my father while just following the local NY and Philly teams from his childhood (although he preferred the Mets), never pressured me into liking certain teams, just taking me to any sporting event I was willing to go to. That allowed me to choose my teams as I grew up, and today I am a Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Devils fan (Seton Hall too if we're talking about more NJ sports, Hazard Zet Forward). I used to actually watch the Nets and Knicks equally as a kid, but when the Nets abandoned NJ I was upset and now I hate them with a passion. It's funny that without any traditional influences from my parents, I still ended up rooting for the traditional, Yankees/Giants/Knicks combo with an NJ twist. Really enjoyed your video and the historical background on all of this, but yeah the beauty of NY sports is there's so many different combos to root for.
Same. It’s rare, but a bit more common for those born in NJ in the late 70s and loving the ‘86 Mets as children. Or maybe those born earlier that love cocaine 😂
Really great video! I especially loved your graphics/maps. I think your colouring of allegiances on the map, doing it distinctly enough but still overlapping and fading out, might be the best way I have seen this type of map designed yet.
Just another addition: first time I found your channel, seems like you're hitting my interest perfectly. I'm gone now, probably binging the rest of your content :)
Fair enough. My father grew up in Colombia and according to him, they only showed on tv there the NBA finals. So he grew up watching magic against bird. He decided to pull for bird and become a Celtics fan and passed it on to me. So yes, I am a Celtics fan
@ I'm born and bred on the island of Ireland. When I started following NBA I was naturally drawn towards the team with the leprechaun logo, bruins and Red Sox naturally followed so I've been leaning Boston for 22 years now. Its only in the last 5 years I've learned that all my family that emigrated in the 1850's are still based around Philly and Pittsburgh. I thought about it but I'm in too deep. Still I find the dynamic of multi sports team cities very interesting and even how fandom crosses state lines especially between New York State and Massachusetts
The difference between Mets and Yankee fans is that with the Mets, You’re almost born as a fan. Your father or grandfather was a fan growing up so you inherently follow suit. With the Yankees, a lot of fans grow up liking them because they have historically always been great so it’s easy to root for them.
As a Yankee fan it’s true. I ah e to admit we have way more bandwagon fans because the Yankees are so well known and marketed. I actually hate it. But my first game as a kid was a yankee game and I was hooked for life
I have grown up as an SF Giants fan from Cali, and still consider them my hometown team; however, since learning about their ties to the Mets, I have grown into a strong Mets follower. Let’s Go, Mets!
I have a friend who’s a Mets and Jets fan, but became a rangers fan as she didn’t get into hockey until she met her friend in college, who’s a huge rangers fan. So sometimes it’s the people you meet who get you into sports help you decide your team. Like me, I’m Canadian but became a cubs fan because my step dad got me into baseball
Awesome video!! As I New Yorker I was super interested in this. I support Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Islanders. Most of these were passed down through family.
From the area, I myself am a sixth generation yankee fan x2, both on my mother and father's side have been loyal Yankee fans since their ancestors got off the boat at Ellis Island. My dad tells me the stories his grand father and great uncles telling him about going to their first "New York Highlanders" game for one penny in the early 1900's. Besides the food recipes, Yankee fandom is the main thing passed on to generations. Im also a giants and jets fan. I grew up in a split house, My mom is a giants fan and My dad is a jets fan bc of watching Namath get his guarantee at 13 yrs old. was a plus for me bc I grew up with season tickets to both teams! Went to the meadowlands a minimum of 9-10 games a year. I got to watch many playoff runs , the jets reached 2 afc championships, and see Eli get to the sb twice. for NHL and NBA, I strictly stuck to my local roots. Growing up in NJ made me a Nets and devils fan. I cried when they moved to Bk. I'll always appreciate the Kidd days. I went to the first home game in both of those finals in the early 2000s. MLB: Yanks, NFL: Jets and Giants NHL: Devils NBA: Nets
IM From New Orleans I’m Jets & Islanders But I Like Mets. Why Chose to be Jets Fan because I went TGI Friday in Manhattan & I saw Jets Logo & it was Cool to see as 10 Yr old . Brett Favre Is One of My Favorite QB Of all Time when he was Traded Jets in 2008 I Become A jets Fan. I want To Be Cowboys,Packers ,patriots or Giants Fan but I Choose Jets No Regrets One day jets can find a way to be successful Again.Jets Got new Coach & great talents on That squad.Jets Fan since 2008 Only Saw My Team In AFC Championship Games Twice I haven’t Make Playoffs Since 2010 & Last Time jets have winning Record is 2015 with Ryan Fitzpatrick as Our QB With Chris Ivory,Eric Decker,&Brandon Marshall.
I’m Not a NYC Sports Fan Since I’m a Philly Sports Fan But This Video is So Interesting To Watch With The Entire NYC and North NJ Area So Split in Half Down The Middle Depending Where U Live in The North NJ and NY Area
FC NYC, Rangers, Bills (the only NY state team), knickerbockers, metropolitans and dodgers (they are still BK to me was awesome seeing them play each other in playoffs. American League rules suck).
Mets and Giants here. My grandma was a Brooklyn Dodgers and NY football Giants fan back in the day, and the loyalty to Big Blue remains in the family to this day.
Great video, my whole family grew up in The Bronx and my fandom was passed down through them. Yankees, Football Giants, and Rangers. I found I dont mind the Mets and Jets as I have family that support them too! 😊
My Puerto Rican family was die hard Yankees fans since coming to the States in the 50s. My Italian Uncle grew up a die hard Rangers fan and got me into them at a young age. I was actually born in Jersey so when I was little my dad got me a Vince Carter New Jersey Nets poster and he became my first favorite player and becoming a Nets fan followed suit. Through the ups and downs of all my franchises I have become an even greater fan and while unique it’s always such a cool moment to meet other fans of those 3 franchises. Great video btw, especially appreciated the insight you shared on how social media can impact fandoms.
@@joes3344 Well it’s because I’ve always lived in North New Jersey and there’s no NBA teams in Jersey and I’m closest to the Knicks or Nets and the first NBA game I ever went to was a Knicks game so I’ve always loved them.
@ Okay, yes that makes sense! I follow my Dad as a Yankees and especially Rangers and Knicks fan. Football he likes Cowboys and hates the Giants so naturally I went with the Jets 🤣
I am a HUGE Yankees fan I am from nj also a big giants fan not as big as the Yankees not a devils or nets fan but Philadelphia 76ers fan thats a different story but I am a rangers fan so there u go I am not from the city of New Jersey so that’s why I am a 76ers fan btw my dad rooted for all these teams
My old man is a huge case study on this. Born in 1955 on Long Island, his mother from Brooklyn was distraught when the Dodgers left. So, he became a Yankees fan like his father. He then picked the Jets because they were new and liked the AFL. He became an Islanders fan when they became a team until he moved to New Jersey in 1987, where he decided to switch his allegiance to the Devils. There are some, but not too many Yankees/Jets/Devils fans
My grandfather was a Giants fan for both sports. when the baseball Giants moved to San Fran he stayed a fan, untill he became a Mets fan when they came around. He is also a Rangers and Nicks fan. I inherit his teams
@de1nonly I couldn't, I switched to the Knicks. Felt awful when they left. Tbh, still feel weird going to Newark for the Devils when the Meadowlands were prefect.
@@Kush3512 This is so always so fascinating to me. New Jersey residents supporting New York teams before their own. Neither the Knicks and now The Nets are a Jersey team but the Nets once were and yet you ditched them for the Knicks. It’s almost like the majority of NJ fans who have this mindset feel inferior to NYC.
NYC teams: Baseball Mets, Yankees, NFL Giants, Jets, NHL Rangers, NBA Nets, Knicks, MLS NYFC, Red Bull NY, that's 9, and 3 of those players in NJ, not NY, meanwhile London saying "Hold my pint"...As of the 2024-25 season, there are seventeen teams playing in professional football leagues in London: seven play in the Premier League, six in the Football League, the second division!! And yes, they ALL are actually based in London!
I’m too young to remember them ever playing in NJ, but I’m from Jersey and root for the Knicks since they just seem like the default NY-metro area NBA team
Yankees, Knicks, Islanders, Jets, and CUSE. The fan base extends to Upstate NY as well (Where and what is Upstate NY is a debate unto itself). I grew up in the Hudson Valley roughly an hour north of Yankee Stadium. Some of my fandom, which was shaped in the 70s, depended on what teams were passed down to you by Dad, who your friends rooted for, and what teams you could actually see on TV with or without cable. I became an Islanders fan almost entirely because I would watch there replays in the morning on the old Sports Channel Cable network before going to school each morning. Also, when the LA Dodgers visit NY for a game, the amount of Dodgers fans who remain loyal and turn out the games is pretty impressive.
@EK_Ragz so now you’re gonna say refs when Josh Allen had by the far most roughing the passer calls in the nfl😂😭💀. All be honest if I had a qb so much inferior I prob start blaming REFS!
Bills: I used to be a Giants fan growing up but with how dysfunctional they have been this past decade, it’s been hard to watch them and I’ve lost a huge amount of emotion watching them throughout the years. However, literally every single member in my family (extended included) are Giants fans so I wanted to be different so I eventually switched to the Bills because to be honest, they are NY’s only real team. I’m also a huge fan of Josh Allen fan. I have also developed way more emotion into the Bills than I have for the Giants over the years. Also since I’m also a Mets fan, I find it odd to root for the Giants as they have way more of a connection to the Yankees than the Mets but I had never seemed to like the Jets either as they aren’t any better at running a Franchise. Nobody call me a bandwagon as the Giants have way more and I mean way more Super Bowls than the Bills who have none and I also tend to like rooting for the underdog.
The Nets trying to get a piece of the NYC proper market backfired. Absolutely nobody is a Nets fan in the city and they killed off any of their real fans with the move out of New Jersey. Now they’re stuck in this “little brother” limbo with the Knicks.
They should be. They sold out to a gangster and abandoned their fan base. Who were there during mostly horrible years. They even changed the colors and logo to some cheeseball monstrosity that nobody would go for. Except an aging rapper and a Russian oligarch.
They have a fanbase it's similar to the lakers/clippers dynamic. This idea that the nets will leave is similar to saying the clippers will leave. Even though their fan bases are much smaller they have larger valuations than if they were going to movie to a small market just because they exist in the largest markets.
If the nets would have won a championship in Brooklyn with KD and Kyrie they would have more fans. Right now the Knicks are a playoff team so everyone is claiming them
A few interesting New York hockey notes. The first NHL team in NYC was actually the Americans who also played in MSG. The Rangers were founded soon after and quickly became the better and more popular team. In a late move to gain fans, the New York Americans rebranded as the Brooklyn Americans even though they continued to play at MSG. They would fold soon after. It’s also worth noting how the Islanders brief move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn failed due to the difficulties with the commute for the majority of their fan base in Long Island, and how UBS Arena has worked better due to the better commute (and considerably more parking for those who drive), while still being close enough to NYC proper to be reachable by subway to grow their fan base there.
From Jersey City -Devils -Yankees -Bengals (family ties) but do favor Giants by pure sentiment of those two SB wins over the pats. The area was electric. -No basketball- they took it from us -NYCFC because I will not support a team in NJ with the title NY its total disrespect
As someone from Hudson county, NJ in the middle of the NYC metro area I’m all over the place when it comes to the sports teams in the area. I’m a Jets/Mets fan because I enjoy both fan bases, supporting the little guy, and it’s just fun going to their games. I chose the Knicks because they are closer to me compared to Brooklyn, but if the Nets never left Jersey I would probably be a Nets fan. In the NHL I’m a Devils fan because at the end of the day, Jersey is Jersey. If we wanna include MLS then I’m a Red Bulls fan.
Most Islanders fans root for the Knicks because we have no real reason to support a team that only represents Brooklyn, as opposed to the Knicks who represent the whole city and state (I think the same is true for Devils fans too)
Simpleton comment. Bro thinks a rhyme-scheme determines fandom. Ok Dr. Suess 😂 -Tell me who roots for the Nets 🤡 -I’ll tell you who. YANKEE FANS when the Knicks sucked and the Nets were good and on the YES CHANNEL 🤣 -Now you all are on the Knicks bandwagon‼️
Giants,Yankees,Knick and devils are my teams for life I still miss the New Jersey Nets I wish they stayed instead of moving to Brooklyn BTW you forgot to add soccer so don’t worry the New York Red Bulls are part my favorites team as well.
Interesting thing: my dad was a Giants fan (in as far as he followed football) despite being born in Maine. That’s because when he was a kid in the ‘40s and 50’s the Giants were the closest NFL team to Maine.
The Nets started out on Long Island in the ABA. Most Mets fans root for the Jets & Isles. Anyone from Nassau or Suffolk who roots for the Rangers is a trader (aka Adam Fox, who plays for the Rangers and grew up on LI).

Was born in Long Island, but moved to Rockland County (The very southern tip of NY, west of Manhattan) when I was very young. I was raised a Devils fan (to the dismay of my grandfather), Giants, Nets, and Mets fan. I am now mid 20's and really only follow hockey as it was the sport I played growing up, but my surrounding area is diverse amongst fans. We even have Buffalo (both sabres and bills) fans down here, which had me shift towards Bills Mafia. NY is truly a unique place :)

As a European, it is so weird that Teams just move to different cities. In European Sports, the Teams are the City.
Welcome back, Mozart.
If I cared about the NBA or NFL, I would be the same.

One thing to add is that the Nets were originally the New York Nets & played in the Nassau County with the Islanders.

Last years World Series was his dream World Series :D
the best fans like multiple teams instead of just one only
I'm a NY sports fan from Long Island who is a diehard Mets fan and favors the Jets, Rangers and Knicks.
A few things I’d like to add:
1) Early 1970s the ABA Nets played at the Coliseum with the Islanders before moving to Jersey with the NBA/ABA merger
2) Mid 1970s the Mets, Yankees, Jets and Giants all shared Shea for a few years during Yankee Stadium’s renovation and Giants Stadium’s construction.

My dad however was born in 1961, after the Dodgers were gone, and grew up mostly in Queens. So he became a Met fan while keeping his dad's other allegiances.

Win or lose i wouldn't change any of them.

It was only after the ABA-NBA merger that they became the New Jersey Nets.
I think u mean they were the New Jersey Americans, not the New York Americans

I’m a giants, Mets, Devils fan
Same here.
So am I. Born in Newark, NJ...
thats so random, but i like it
Same. It’s rare, but a bit more common for those born in NJ in the late 70s and loving the ‘86 Mets as children.
Or maybe those born earlier that love cocaine 😂
Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Knicks, & FCNY
Really great video! I especially loved your graphics/maps. I think your colouring of allegiances on the map, doing it distinctly enough but still overlapping and fading out, might be the best way I have seen this type of map designed yet.
Just another addition: first time I found your channel, seems like you're hitting my interest perfectly. I'm gone now, probably binging the rest of your content :)
New sub!!
Love to see your Spin on football (soccer), in the northwest of England. Unprecedented history & and rivalry. ⚽️
Moved to New Jersey in my early teens so because of that I am a Jets and Giants / Mets / and Devils fan. NBA is a story for another day
today is a new day...
Still I find the dynamic of multi sports team cities very interesting and even how fandom crosses state lines especially between New York State and Massachusetts
my dad grew up in queens in the 70s and 80s so he was mets jets knicks and i followed. i chose the devils on my own because i was born in NJ
The difference between Mets and Yankee fans is that with the Mets, You’re almost born as a fan. Your father or grandfather was a fan growing up so you inherently follow suit. With the Yankees, a lot of fans grow up liking them because they have historically always been great so it’s easy to root for them.
And Some Mets Fans Root For The NY Giants While Other Mets Fans Root For The NY Jets While Most Yankees Fans Root for The Giants or The Jets
That’s not true at all lol
This is utter horse shit.
I got my fan loyalty from my father. He and I have been rooting for the Giants, Mets, Knicks, and Rangers our whole lives.
They also have two MLS teams!
And two g-league teams, a ladies soccer team, a WNBA team and a lacrosse team. Gotta draw the line somewhere
MLS is just professional acting
@@ccbondbasketball is worse with the over exaggerated foul reactions

@@TonysMusic1974 No you don't. Sports fans (and the media) in New York just got to embrace these other New York area teams more.
Of course no love for NYCFC and NY Red Bulls. 11 pro teams across 5 major sports leagues.
I grew in Brooklyn so we hated the yankees. My day, a loyal dodgers fan, took us to Mets games. I follow the NY Giants & the Islanders
A Philly sports fan also have phanbases in Northeastern Maryland, New Castle County in Delaware and Southern New Jersey (Below I-195).

Ph youre from Philly... im sorry...
@@LI2Chesapeake I know the guy with the mets logo aint talking (im still petty about the Phillies flopping over like a limp dick in the post season)
Please say your a jets fan i think you might actually be the first person i've heard of to share the same favorite teams as me
6:33 I am from North NORTH New Jersey and I am a Devils, Giants, Knicks and Yankees fan!
Hell yeah brother
Cannot be from North Jersey and even bring yourself into _being_ an Isles fan. Geography simply forbids it.
Don’t know how you can be a Knicks and Devils fan 😅 I’m Knicks and Rangers. Garden loyal
Yankees, Giants, Devils and Nets
Though lost a lot of enthusiasm for Nets once they left New Jersey
@de1nonly I couldn't, I switched to the Knicks. Felt awful when they left. Tbh, still feel weird going to Newark for the Devils when the Meadowlands were prefect.
@@Kush3512 This is so always so fascinating to me. New Jersey residents supporting New York teams before their own. Neither the Knicks and now The Nets are a Jersey team but the Nets once were and yet you ditched them for the Knicks. It’s almost like the majority of NJ fans who have this mindset feel inferior to NYC.
@@marlinesutherland5358Wdym feel inferior?
NYC teams: Baseball Mets, Yankees, NFL Giants, Jets, NHL Rangers, NBA Nets, Knicks, MLS NYFC, Red Bull NY, that's 9, and 3 of those players in NJ, not NY, meanwhile London saying "Hold my pint"...As of the 2024-25 season, there are seventeen teams playing in professional football leagues in London: seven play in the Premier League, six in the Football League, the second division!! And yes, they ALL are actually based in London!
So you’re not including college teams??? Which is our 2nd division.
You forgot the Devils unless that was on purpose cuz they're in Jersey

Me too. I subsequently lost interest in the NBA and will root against them.
I’m curious do you root for the Knicks now? I have this theory about NJ residents
Great video! It is very well explained! 👏👏👏👏👏
Bills, Mets, Knicks, Isles (2 NYC Teams, 1 LI Team, & 1 NYS Team)
And the Chiefs in KC who kick the living shit out of the Bills again😂😭💀
@ Refs affect the game you know!

Right now the Knicks are a playoff team so everyone is claiming them
@hemmanuelcruz4851 that 2021 chip was ours I swear
You don't know your history. Nets were a NY team with ABA championships with Dr J and the KNICKS fucked us to NJ! Know your history casual!
I’m a
Rangers fan

Big Islanders fan who grew up in Queens now living in Long Island. Enjoyed watching The Greatest Hockey Dynasty, 4 straight Stanley Cups 1980 - 1983

It sure is. The only NFL team that pays NY state taxes because their stadium is inside New York state not New Jersey like the Giants and Jets.
From Jersey City
-Devils
-Yankees
-Bengals (family ties) but do favor Giants by pure sentiment of those two SB wins over the pats. The area was electric.
-No basketball- they took it from us
-NYCFC because I will not support a team in NJ with the title NY its total disrespect
Love your videos, keep them coming!
Hoping to see more stuff this year😉
Mets-Jets-Nets pick Isles/Devils Its pretty simple
Yanks-Giants-Rangers-Knicks, "the old guard"
That's over simplified. I know many Giants, Yankees, Devils, Red Bulls fans. Devils and Red Bulls soccer are becoming a thing.
Most Islanders fans root for the Knicks because we have no real reason to support a team that only represents Brooklyn, as opposed to the Knicks who represent the whole city and state (I think the same is true for Devils fans too)
Used to root for the nets until they left NJ
Simpleton comment. Bro thinks a rhyme-scheme determines fandom. Ok Dr. Suess 😂 -Tell me who roots for the Nets 🤡 -I’ll tell you who. YANKEE FANS when the Knicks sucked and the Nets were good and on the YES CHANNEL 🤣 -Now you all are on the Knicks bandwagon‼️
Let’s not forget Red Bulls-NYCFC
Who? Oh you mean the team Theirry went to for like 12 minutes and the then NYCFC being the sports equivalent of crashing on someone's couch
Giants,Yankees,Knick and devils are my teams for life
I still miss the New Jersey Nets I wish they stayed instead of moving to Brooklyn
BTW you forgot to add soccer so don’t worry the New York Red Bulls are part my favorites team as well.

I was born in Edison, NJ. I'm a Yankees/Giants/Rangers/Knicks fan. My grandfather grew up in upper Manhattan close to the Polo Grounds. He was a Giants fan for both MLB and NFL, then changed to a Mets fan when they started.
