Christ almighty, that shot of the street in Walworth after the market had finished (starting at 20:25 ) is like the perfect objective correlative for such a chilling crime. I don't think I've ever seen such a depressing street scene before, it's simply ghastly : grey, dirty, muddy, wind-blown litter everywhere, dingy shops, totally deserted.
These reconstructions are way better than those 10+ years after. They seem to lose their way in the late 90s. These keep you on the edge and are complete whereas the latter were so short and there was too much of finding people from photo fits.
Yes you’re right. I think in the later series of Crimewatch they tended to use far too many visual FX and eerie sounds/music as if trying to create some kind of epic movie. They went overboard on everything, the set, GFX, presenters. Simple shown here was the key with little distraction from annoying special effects, computer graphics and silly music in the reconstructions.
I’m watching these episodes in chronological order from 1984 onwards and this is the first episode so far where the reconstruction has featured a woman as the culprit

I don't know anyone from my class at my primary school thst didn't do this . It's why so many children now are obese and addicted to computer games because parents now are too frightened to let them out at all . Children were taught the green cross code very young and even as late as 19 80s communities were often very "close knit" where there was always someone about who knew you or your family - the world was very much more "local " in the UK which is part of the reason parents generally felt more reassured. The success of the market in the film is a classic example of that sort of community. Just you remember that his poor "auntie" , her daughter and his mother will have to live with the responsibility of that every day decision for the rest of their lives , that is , if Barry's death didn't cause them to die young anyway . What's more frustrating is all those people who saw them on the journey and many seemingly felt uncomfortable but did nothing about it , such as note down the car's number plate or call the police /both .

I'm pretty sure that both the gems raider with the balaclava and trench coat and the Weybridge antiques gunman from the June 1985 episode are played by the same actor, Gary Shail of Quadrophenia and Metal Mickey fame as his voice is distinctive. I presume they were different villains!
