  • Sign Language Lessons - Family, Part 1 (ASL Snippets #13) - Let's learn about family! This is the first of a series in the ASL Snippets collection that will cover all of the family relationships. Because there are a lot of signs relating to family. I'm breaking it up into sections. So, have fun watching and learning! In this video we'll cover the story of boy meets girl, boy courts girl, boy marries girl.
    Footnote:
American Sign Language is a very rich, complex, and unique language. To accurately learn ASL takes commitment and motivation. UA-cam is FULL of videos by individuals who make "cutesy" little videos that show random signs and claim to be teaching "sign language." Most of them talk, talk talk, sign, talk, talk, talk, sign.... as a result, they are spreading wrong information about what ASL is and how it is used. Some examples - Melissa Schenk, Ryan Moriarty, Kate Maria, etc. Each of their videos have a lot of views, but for each one of them, the information they are spreading is wrong. And because each one of them gets paid for their videos, not only are they "teaching" a language that they know nothing about, they are also making money at the expense of the Deaf. Is it really that big of a deal? What do you think? A minority culture that is often discriminated against and their language treated like some "cutesy quasi-thing" that's not a "real language."
If you have watched and voted thumbs-up on their videos and subscribed to their channels, you're helping to encourage them to continue to take advantage of the Deaf and to wrongly profit off a language that they are teaching wrong. Please, UNsubscribe from them, vote thumbs-down, and leave a comment to encourage others to look for and support accurate sources. Then, take the time to find accurate videos. Ask the video makers where they learned and if they are qualified to teach.
Take a moment to vote thumbs-up and leave a positive comment on videos made by individuals who truly KNOW sign language. Subscribe to their channel and share their videos with others. Please help to actively spread the accurate use of ASL.
On behalf of the Deaf community and those of us who look to have our language, community and culture get the respect they deserve, I thank you.

How awesome. What a smart way to learn sign language! Rather than learning just the signs themselves, you put everything in context. The next time someone ask them to teach them sign language, I will point them to your channel. No one teaches sign language better than Deaf people. Thank you!

Loll!! Great video. Made me laugh. It's been a while since I signed ( had a perforation in my left ear thus making me hard of hearing when I was younger, though got surgery to fix). Had to go through speech and audiology therapy to help me regain full speech ( my hearing is fair/fine now) I am surprised I remembered some of the signs and understood. Now I am eager to refresh myself again in ASL. Thank you, and I subbed

Hi Jason! Sorry, I do not subtitle my educational videos. ASL and English are two separate languages. By subtitling, it creates a crutch, or a dependency on English. It also develops bad habits. Just work to catch what you can and come back later to review. You'll get it eventually! :)

Hello sir... I am a few weeks into a sign language class and I find your videos very helpful. I do have to agree with some of the others however on the matter of subtitles. I am learning a lot but I believe that your videos would be much more helpful to the new signer if you had subtitle. Thank you for work.

Very well done..I love the way you teach that. No need for subtitles but perhaps for people who know 0 sign it may help. I love it. Very much like a Berlitz course for learning languages. No translation you need to figure it out like how a child would learning for the first time. Very well done !!

5:46- to like.. 6:04, what was that you signed? I completely understood everything except for that one part :/ I love watching your videos! They're so helpful and you make the signs and their meanings so clear (which is why I'm shocked I wasn't able to get that one sign) and you're such a great story teller!

That's why you just have to go on guessing. Some things are clear, and when he knows you're not going to get a word he deos it repeatedly. It's the same with all language learning.... Wherever you go to learn, you'll only learn effectively if the teacher is speaking constantly.

Ah, you caught me. I forgot the kiss during the wedding ceremony. :( I was going to go back and re-do it, but I remembered the promise I made myself - My ASL Snippets are intended to be "quick and dirty." So, I left out the kiss. Bummer huh? Ha.
