I got the Snowspeeder Luke last week and I was really surprised just how good it is. He's so solid. Tight limbs, great accessories and possibly indestructible.

I really admire the passion channels like yours and RetroBlasting have. There's honesty and integrity in all that you do and that's why I'll always watch. It's funny things like the figure assortment (bespin/hoth) wouldn't even cross my mind. I guess I'm a different type of collector, it's just not important to me but I get where you're coming from on that. I order most of my items online as it's just to hard to find things in stores now but It's definitely an unsatisfactory way to collect imo. I don't really blame hasbro as much as the retailers they deal with like walmart and target. They're not really toy stores and they definitely don't function that way. Hopefully in the future a store like toys r us will open up again in the usa.

Your comment that they should have issued all “Hoth” figures or all “Bespin” figures is a BRILLIANT comment. They should have issued ALL Bespin or ALL Hoth and then issued the Other in a few years. Brilliant observation.

Great Video my friend. I wonder if the scattering of characters from Bespin and Hoth was Hasbro's way of trying to give us variety. I still thought before these were announced we were getting a Bespin Han Solo. I'm still keen for a POTF 1985 retro set, coin included!

You're spot on about Lando being a peg warmer. I've only found a complete set of these twice in stores, but I've seen Lando and Han several times by themselves. Lando also seems to be the peg warmer in the 6" Black Series retro carded figues as well. Glad you like them! 👍

Analog Toys provides another comprehensive review video, this time featuring a closer look at the new Empire Strikes Back retro collection from Hasbro!
Tony's love for Star Wars and their action figures is plain to see and although Hasbro continues to let their fans down with their odd choice of figure selection, Tony always endeavours to highlight the positives, as well as the negatives, in his mini documentaries!
It's just a shame that Hasbro hasn't got the sense, to listen to Tony's advice!

The Hoth Leia, Lando were, along with Darth Vader, were the first three Star Wars toys I ever owned back in the early 80s (I don’t have them now).
My kids got me the retro Darth Vader as a Father’s Day gift, which was really nice because it brought back some memories and they were cheap and well within their pocket-money price range. But looking at this video, the Leia just doesn’t look like it used to. My original toy still exists. My brother had it, and now his kids have it. The hair was a different colour and was matt, as was the skin. The hair here is too dark and shiny. And the legs here are a different shade and a bit overstated. And all these figures look as if the features aren’t as well defined. I wonder if they are taken from the original moulds or if they are taken from a laser scan. But great video, as always.

I think the variety of outfits was meant to encapsulate the whole film rather than limit it to one location. It’s rather savvy, if somewhat narrow minded to figure interaction.
It’s pretty much guaranteed that we will see this trend continuing in the inevitable ROTJ line with a mixture of Tatooine and Endor outfits.

  • @antman2919

Thanks Tony, another entertaining video. Great starter kit for beginners, I hope they expand the line for characters never produced before in the vintage style. They just need to get the distribution right (as in available on shelves) and stop bundling with games no one wants. In Australia the only place to buy this in-store is EB Games and I've noticed the same Death Star board game collecting dust at $40, the same with the Hoth game. I'm waiting for it to be discounted to half its price and then I'll get it. I hope Hasbro marketing team learn the lesson for the next wave. Remember the 4 P's of marketing people - product, place, promotion, price.

I agree about the Bespin styles, Hoth Han was my least fav but I do like them. There is clearly a market for this kind of line. However Hoth pilot Luke seems a bit of a random choice. The only figures I remember wishing for back in the day were Tarkin, stormtrooper Han or R2 with a 3rd leg, Degobah Training Luke, Jedi Luke without the tunic or slave Leia. Never thought about Hoth pilot Luke.

I feel like Hasbro is testing the waters with these first few waves of retro collection figures and trying to gauge whether they should go down this particular retail path. I completely agree that for the presumed ROTJ wave that Hasbro focus on releasing figures from one environment. I'm super disappointed in the mix matching of the ESB wave. First off, Bespin Han was my favorite original figure growing up, and secondly what's up with isolating Lando? Not cool. Number one ROTJ retro figure that I'd like to see... Emperor Palpatine!

Just a theory, but probably after they do the ROTJ wave, they'll do a second ANH one. Comprised of the other six original figures they haven't released yet.
And maybe if we're 'lucky', they'll do a Retro vehicle line.

  • @MRK1973
    @MRK1973 4 роки тому

Great video once again. While Hasbro make an effort with the retro collection, it is like they don’t pay attention to the details or care enough to make these something special...the edging to the cards, no chrome plated C3PO, or R2D2, floppy card back, endless safety warnings everywhere etc. After 35 ,40 years you’d think technology has improved for toy companies to replicate things properly. Yet it’s not as good. For the return of the Jedi retro line it’d be really cool if they did a pop up lightsaber R2 D2. But you just know they likely won’t bother. I’d like to be proved wrong.

Two peg warmers in ESB releases...retro Lando and Black Series Lando. In my opinion, the release of both of these figures at around the same time was a socio-political decision. Next wave, General/Skiff Lando, Luke Jedi, Han Endor (use the same big head version from wave 1 and give soft goods coat), and Leia Boushh (but the helmet will not be removable). The packed item with board game will be Han in Carbonite from Slave I and Han Jabba's Palace.
Luke Hoth would not be released in ESB retro, it might drive down desire for Luke Snowspeeder. As usual, love your vids!

I think Luke and Leias outfit choice is fine cause these are the costumes they spend a huge chunk of the movie in..But Han should of been Bespin outfit cause he spent most of the movie in that get up..I find the chices just fine otherwise cause I am not taking them off the cards and Im more into getting the important characters like Lando and Boba than I am creating an environment as one wont have the vintage vehicles anyways

I totally disagree with you on the set needing to have a focus on where they were in the movie. If you look at the ESB set, there is a nice sampling of the entire movie. Luke with Yoda. Luke with Lando. Han with Leia. I don't need or want them all to be from the same scene in the movie.

Maybe it’s worth bearing in mind that the “mixed” heroes figures is a negative only to you. You talk like that’s almost a unanimous view? There are people, myself included, that like having Hoth and Bespin represented. So it’s not really objectively a fault or a bad decision.

The face paint for Hoth Han is better on the Retro cos it's pinker and more "fleshy", for sure. The Vintage has a yellowy hue that matches his snow pants, and it looks "cheap", as if they couldn't spare another shade of paint.
The only thing I see so far that sucks about all the Retro figures, is how the sculpting detail is lost or reduced due to a kind of "smoothing" or "mushing" (forgive my lousy adjectives - I cannot find the right one to describe this marring). For example, the fur trim around Hoth Han's hood - the grooves are deeper on the Vintage than the Retro. Same with the buckles & straps on his boots. And his coat. And his snow pants... The list goes on, from head to toe, on (presumably) every Retro character.
If it's a sculpting detail, based on how deep certain "detail grooves" go, then Retro chintzed out and made very sloppy reproductions.
So, score 1 for Retro on the paint choices, but take it back (and possibly dedcut a few additional points) for the "soft" sculpting detail.
