I'm loving the potential of a new villain for BV!! Excited to see where it goes!! The RETROBLASTING end credit scenes will forever dominate my destiny!!
I quite liked that the first retro figures from the Mandalorian had vinyl capes and the second lot had cloth capes, a bit like how the original figures got better with time. The Armourer is an especially nice one.
I always liked there was only ever one Vader in the original line and to this day I LOVE his design simplicity. There's something admirable about that.
What o didn’t like was from Bespin luke onward the Vader and Luke’s were totally incompatible. Luke’s Sabre was not only longer but noticeably different. That final duel couldn’t be played out properly for many decades.
I appreciate the extra work put into your videos...to keep them fresh. Like the transition that happens when showing the old vader lightsaber to showing the new one. Great work, Retroblasting, as always!
wow..the timing of this video, for which I have just recently received my Iconicon Boba Fett in the mail, Stan does awesome stuff! Chris is the Gold standard for original Kenner style figs. awesome vid, now I want the new Empire Boba! Keep on keepin on Michael.
Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed, Hasbro. The ability to paint Darth Vader's eyes red is INSIGNIFICANT next to the power of Stan Solo's creations. :)
If you ever decide to stop doing UA-cam videos, your final video should be a restoration video where you put Broken Vader arms back on, and stick a lightsaber in his hand. Although, I hope that day is a long time away, because I really enjoy this channel.
Personally I love the retro Vader, because I love that kinda ‘77/‘78 clunky design style. But then again I love the way Stan Solo gets the details right while maintaining the retro style somehow. It’s tough.
Perfection, as always Michael. Love the ending bit, it's so great you're continuing & expanding your "universe". Very few videomakers do that. It's a very nice touch, you're a damn maniac ; )
Speaking of Vaders "red eyes" if you look at the Death Star trench run scene if you look carefully at the exact shots were the camera is looking at Vader in his Tie Fighter cockpit you CAN CLEARLY see Dave Prowse eyes behind the mask eye lenses
I like the retro collection line I hope Hasbro continues it. I agree I hope Hasbro can do small updates to future retro collection lines. Stan Solo's Boba Fett's are amazing!!!! You can't go wrong when ordering any figure from Chris Smith.
For me I like to collect beat up vintage figures. If it's to mint it could be a reproduction. I'd rather pay $40.00 for a loose worn out Boba Fett then pay a few hundred for a replica that's not original. The damage is kind of a seal of it's original. Also as kids this is how we remember our toys: beat to hell and back. Also cheaper.
There's a few other color corrections on the updated Darth Vader other than the eyes, it looks like. Part of the chestplate is recolored, as is the lightsaber base.
the newer wave of mandalorian figures are definitely closer to the 84/85 potf look. the figures have more detail as well as soft goods accessories. looks like they are taking it up a notch with future waves too and i appreciate that.
Every time it played on TV or paperview Toys R Us would get waves of kids looking for Star Wars Toys. This went on right into the 90’s till POTF2 came in 1995😊 George Lucas himself though canceled the line. Sone said it has a lot to do with the divorce with Marcia his Ex. Hard to say.
It had been successful, but by 1985, sales had slowed down a lot. There were no new movies and sales for toys from the Ewoks and Droids cartoons were abysmal. So since it wasn't doing well, Kenner ended the line.
It was dead by 1985. The only place to go when your are at the top, is down. Transformers, Gi Joe and MOTU were all out by this point taking their market share and there was no new media to support the line.
Dave from Toy Polloi offers a pattern for making a proper fabric cape for Kenner's Darth Vader that makes him look thousand times better than Hasbro's Retro Vader from Obi-Wan.
I'm not big on the retro figures, probably because I only have like 3 star wars figures left over from the 80s, but I have to admit, the Slave Leia and and Oola figures look great and I do want to get them.
Anything that's niche or hobby related, I've always tried to keep a couple things in mind when doing comparisons. One is asking price, and another is the resources at the maker's disposal. And so when a tiny maker can go up against a bazillion-dollar company with basically EVERYthing at their disposal, and a tiny maker can just spank the corporation, well, shame on the corporations. I know that as a manufacturer, a cost savings of even a single penny per unit across a million units really adds up, but it would take SO little for them to up their game just a TINY bit, win back all those customers who've abandoned them, & take down the competition. But, they won't change. So I'll continue to either buy used/vintage or support the little guy as much as I am able. And the fans will continue to win.
On the nose, as always. Great video. Sadly, Stan Solo no longer has any astromech droids and has stated that there won't be more in the future. I managed to order the red & black R5 unit before they were all gone. I'm hoping that he'll at least make some of the custom stickers for his astromechs available for sale to make customizing of vintage figures (or the upcoming retro Artoo) easier.
@@Chronically0nline From some of the comments he's made, I suspect he's getting tired of the constant hassle. He gets grief from the HasBros, the anti-repro zealots, and there's always the factories in China. Chinese factories can do pretty much anything they want with the tooling they have in storage, and there's not a damn thing Stan Solo can do about it. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the reason there are no more Astromechs or Han Solo in Stormtrooper armor coming is that the factory sold the tooling for scrap. That sort of thing happens all the time over there.
There could be a “cease and desist” behind the scenes. After all, Hasbro is now touching on what Smith has been doing, and I can see Hasbro/Disney not having that.
After watching this video I hunted down the retro Vader at my local comics store (Shoutout to Heroes Comics here in London ON). Once I had him in hand, purchased and brought home. I have several Stan Solo figs alongside my childhood Kenner collection, my only Hasbro fig to date was Tarkin. The Vader is a perfect fit. Very ROTJ era Kenner feel, fits in perfect beside the Emperor and the rest of the line. This is the Vader I wanted as a kid with the soft cape and held lightsaber. (Also he looks pretty good alongside the Stan Solo ROTJ Boba that I picked up a couple months ago). Thanks Michael, would’ve never had this Vader on my radar without your work.
I always thought the red eyes in the movie was like an unavoidable thing: a combination of budget limits, a way for actor David Prowse to see who he's talking to, where he's going, and the BRIGHT Hollywood lights diluting black lenses. I know in Revenge of the Sith it's red inside the mask but on a figure it's like pointing out the limits the movie makers had in '77. TY Retroblasting team!
The fans really are doing great work! I really like Stan's Boba Fett, it kinda reminds me right off the bat of a bridge between the 80s and 90s, like a missing link. I do really like the retro Vader. It's not perfect, but I feel it's a welcome addition to the Vader figure family
Watch any, ANY Retroblasting video and you will leave a more enlightened, educated and entertained individual. No other content on UA-cam compares. And nothing can compare to Stan Solo. Looking at Hasbro’s attempt reminds me of Captain Picard’s reply to Guinan, in Yesterday’s Enterprise: “Not good enough, damn it! NOT GOOD ENOUGH!”
As always a solid video. Straight and to the point. I totally agree with you Michael, Hasbro is not giving what the fans are asking/wanting. Stan Solo has the power! Love your new logo and intro/outro btw!
Having purchased this version of Vader today, all I can say is that I like it a lot. Aesthetically, it puts me in mind of the die-cast Vader figure which Takara produced back in the 70s & can definitely see the Samurai armour inspired costume design in this interpretation. The red eye lenses don't bother me in the slightest, they're very reminiscent of Vaders depiction on the covers of vintage Marvel comics.
Great video as always Micheal, the editing and effects are improving, you’re taking many steps into a larger world. I’ve been meaning to get my hands on more figures from Stan Solo, been kinda tough to decide which ones to pick, but I may yet pick up the ROTJ Boba Fett after seeing this. The Retro Vader is physically superior to the Kenner Vader, but as you said they went overboard on the red eyes and tbh it makes him a bit goofy. The custom one from that fan looks more like how like how he did in ESB and ROTJ; With the black eyes (as mentioned), blue button (hard to see) and one of the sliver switches at the bottom are red. Keep up the great work RB!!!
Agreed, the Retro Collection Vader is an improvement. Still, I'd LOVE to see what Stan Solo could do with Vader, Kenobi and other 78-79 figures that could stand to be upgraded.
Hey Michael. It’s William. Just wanted to let you know I was able to get Slave Leia after watching your video. Thank you Sir! I’m looking forward to receiving my 1st ever non-Kenner original OG SW item. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 I am OK with fan-made product.
8:15 Lol, you can literally just make these changes with a black sharpie, minus the hilt color change which you probably don’t want to make anyway because it wouldn’t be consistent with your other figures.

At this point I would only want figures from Stan Solo. Just like how I'm only going to focus on Action Force over G.I. Joe because these fan creators listen to their customers and giving them quality.
