I've been on a spirit quest to find the right disc for this slot. I've found the new FD to fill the neutral slot. I've had an opto river for a while, and you're right...that thing can be squirrelly if you're not careful. I got a Discraft Genius with a mystery box ... crazy flippy and hard to control. I recently bought an Axiom Crave and a Mint Jackalope that I haven't been able to test yet because of a shoulder issue, but I've heard great things about both.

Just a heads up regarding the Leopard3. It actually has a 1.65 cm rim thickness, like the original Leopard, but they flatten the Leo3 more (not sure how, the mold is the same as the Leopard3, but they're less domey). I've verified this myself using calipers with the multiple Leopards, Leopard3s, and Centurions (which are just Leopard3s). The flatter disc is supposed to make the discs "faster" ie more aerodynamic, and resist turn slightly better, and in my experience that's definitely the case.
Some of the older Champion plastic, I believe if it ends up out in the sun too long, becomes brittle. My friend had a Leo and it finally broke when it hit a curb.
I'm doing a video comparing the old and new Discmania FDs, the Innova "Dark Rebel" Fairway Discs, and the Innova Hawkeye. They're all effectively the same disc, but the brand new FD is definitely a new mold. I typically bag an S-Line FD, Champion Leopard3, and Star Leopard, and they fill slightly different slots for me, due to their stability differences.
Anyhow, great video! Keep up the great work!

The discmania essence would've been the best comparison for an understable fairway. It's great. Glides like a river but not as flippy.

Totally agree with your analysis. I was surprised how stable the FD turned out compared to Innova produced FD's I'd thrown in the past. The Essence would have been more similar to the others and I even have one.

@@keepdiscgolfweird5879 The old FD has a smoother, less aggressive rim than the newer ones. You can see it and feel it if you compare them side-by-side with a dark rebel or a hawkeye, both of which are from the same original FD mold. Having thrown them both, those new Innova discs fly with a noticeably lower stability than the retooled "Pro FD", as some are calling the new c-line FD. All the star-like plastics, including the upcoming new s-line, should all beat in faster than the stiffer plastics like new c-line.

Yeah. Essense would be must closer to these. PD is stable even overstable in that Italian blend plastic!

Just lost my river in some crazy thick rough, so I pulled a new star leopard3 out of my closet, but it's as stable as my star tl3. I think I'll try out on of those drifts. Thanks

I like the Drift. Flies very smooth for me. I really like Prodigy disc as well but about 50% of their discs have flashing problems and I need to sand them down.

7:35 to me the Leopard3 looks more like a turn -0.5 fade 1. just look at the diagram. (although my experience with the old Leopard _is_ in fact a -2,1). I wish there was more uniformity/standardization in the numbers... like, independently tested by a throwing machine. and yeah, there's no way the River is a glide7 - it's more like a glide5 when you compare to other discs' distances, and actually being an 8speed because it has an 18mm rim, it's numbers are more like an 8 5 -2 1 (but 8 5 is normal, nothing impressive like calling it a 7 7 to help boost enthusiasm and sales). However, I don't understand why you stated that the Mantis gets extra distance when on the charts it's clearly one of the shortest (along with the Patriot).

So MVP Insanity would fit in this... I like it a lot. Little bit stable as new, little bit unstable when used.

I would like to see how the mvp switch or the axiom inspire compare to these. Also i have a viking discs cosmos that is very similar to a leaopard 3. Pretty nice disc!

Un underrated fairway driver to me as a beginner would be the Yikun HU.. feels a bit cheap (it was!) but I flies so nicely and predictable for me. It's bang for the bucks!
Also the underworld is a useful disc for me if I want to go straight in the woods - so far I enjoy the retro/origio material the most.

@@jordank7329 that's what I want because I throw sidearm same distance as back hand 375 and I have good touch with both back hand and 4 hand so I very rarely need a disc to turn over

A great step up from these discs is the Axiom insanity, it's faster at speed 9 but it flies very straight with a little bit of turn. The plasma plastic ones are my favorite by far.

Update: I've been throwing a gstar Hawkeye (old FD mold) and it's very straight (a true -1 1), also the (new)FD in a metalflake C, and use it for a straight flight with a decent fade (0 1 / 0 1.5), and a gstar Leopard which is doing very nicely (at beginner armspeed I rate it -1 1). I'm going to give the Drift a try - I'm hoping for something slightly less stable than the Hawkeye(oldFD) in that speed category (a bit faster than the Leopard). Note: the Drift, River, Hawkeye, are technically 8 speeds, with their 18mm rims (or 1.8cm for any confused Americans). I feel the manufacturers should put more accurate numbers, as a slight difference in rim width affects the "float" that comes from the size of the opening/air-pocket underneath, which, together with the dome that provides lift, contribute to it more easily staying in the air longer - and make it easier or harder for lower arm speeds. Even if that does come at the expense of the very subjective glide rating.
