Perfect example of our screwed up music industry! This band is as talented as Queen,The Beatles, Supertramp, and every other legendary band out there! It just goes to show you where our industry standards are! Truly one one the most under-rated! Spilt Milk Is A Masterpiece!!!!!
I saw the band in California and they were excellent. I told them they would find the UK receptive to their whole style. Spilt Milk my fave. I agree that now would be a better time. Bit sad, as the songs are amazing
I saw them summer 1993 at a small club near Saratoga Springs, NY. What a great show! It didnt even sell out, but they didnt care.......just sucxh a chemistry with their crowd and they seriously rocked!
It’s often said that it’s the friction between band members that creates the musical masterpieces in this world. Never more true than with these cats. Their individual music has greatness, but when combined in Jellyfish, ahhhhhh... PERFECTION. Wish they could have held it together.
Absolute classic !! The harmonies are Heaven !! ... This was actually a big top 10 hit on alternative/modern rock radio in early 1991.... so sad what happened with those stations after grunge broke through a few months later and the corporate consultants took them over and turned them all into "alterna-Metal" radio.
Holy shit. You did not just say that. I haven't been to baby head in a millenia. Hahaa. RI my home state!!!! So many good bands came to the clubs in providence back in the day. Damn I miss it. .
It is absolutely amazing the sheer number of fabulous groups that slip through the proverbial 'cracks' of stardom. Sorry I missed them in their heyday; but better late than never, I guess....
@@lukero5502 no, it's Jason Falkner playing bass on this track. Chris didn't join the band until after the album was finished. He doesn't play on Bellybutton at all. Falkner plays bass on 4 of the tracks, Steve McDonald on 3 tracks, John Patitucci on 3 tracks.
@@lukero5502 yes, all three guys did a great job. John Patitucci also played upright bass on "Russian Hill" on Spilt Milk (but he is not credited on the album artwork)
XTC were brilliant, but seem mostly forgotten now (not by us, of course). I can see similarities, but I think the main differences were that XTC were quintessentially British and, to me, being British, Jellyfish were almost quintessentially American. I enjoy both takes on pop music, though, and always have.
I had the pleasure of interviewing these guys when the album came out and was invited to their LA debut at The Roxy, then would run into Jason here and there in Hollywood. Oh, those were the early ‘90’. Listening again now, That Is Way does have a Rundgrenesque sound even though, if my memory serves me right, the album was produced by Arif Marden which produced The Bee Gees. Do correct me if I’m wrong.
I'd never thought about a connection with Todd Rundgren, but now you say it becomes so obvious. I can hear Todd singing some of the phrases from this song. It wasn't Arif Marden, but you were on the right track. It was Albhy Galuten, who produced some of the Bee Gees greatest hits.
@@KonoShunkan The Rundgren influence makes a lot of sense. They were influenced by XTC at least a bit, and Skylarking (a Rundgren-produced XTC album) has so many moments that reminds me of Jellyfish
I might have seen this video maybe twice on MTV and then never heard a thing from them again, but this song always stuck in my head. took me a while but I got Bellybutton and Spilt Milk. I join the chorus - these guys should have been mega. They remind me of "Odessey and Oracle" Zombies.
1993 was a personally pivotal year for me. this song accompanied my transition from junior high to senior high; moving from a 5th generation house to a semi-modern rental; moving from a mostly quiet hillside town to a mostly noisy and flat metropolis.
Hey Andy, 2020 really needs you guys right now in the worst way. I'd be ok with a combined lineup of both albums because they're both underrated masterpieces.
These band is dope. What happened to them? Like everyone else, I think they are extremely underrated and obscure because I didn't find out about them until now.
Prior to the internet record companies, distributors, and radio stations could sit on or bury good talent. That's been broken up. But there are no real studies to show any consistent new musical talent coming directly from the internet yet. The first time that happens will be a blueprint for the rest.
So true! I worked for the record company when it was released, and never understood why radio didn't embrace them. Over the years....I came to the conclusion that they were ahead of their time!
Majorly under appreciated band. Andy is awesome!!!! Just goes to prove most people wouldn't know good music if it bit them on the ass. Jellyfish will always be one of my favorites.
I was made aware of this band via Brian Walsby and an article in Consequence of Sound about the history of this band. Awesome power pop blend of Squeeze, XTC, 10cc and the usual suspects (Beatles, Todd Rundgren, etc). I am sorry I missed this band the first time around and will atone for my error by buying their CDs/LPs (if I can still find them).
Such an awesome band. They should add all the views from the other "unauthorized" versions that have been removed. One of the most under-rated bands of all time.
I agree, they were amazing, but they didn't get swallowed up by Nirvana. It's possible for different genres to co exist. It's been that way for a long time. They didn't make it big because they internally combusted. There were disagreements and fights with the band members that they couldn't work out. Unfortunately, It's as simple as that.
Jellyfish is one of those amazing bands like Toy Matinee or Airplay that are just too good for general consumption. Hell, even Toto really only had hits with their most simplistic songs.
I was a big Ambrosia fan of their first 2 albums which were so creative, then they became known for "yacht rock" ick. Glad to see the Toto call out, agree 100%.
Not only were they brilliant but the recordings were absolutely brilliant... Tight and just well engineered from start to end! of Course it was Co-producer, Engineer, Mixed By - Jack Joseph Puig!! Fucking BRILLIANT!
Yeah it is. Amazingly Beatle-esque and refreshingly good compared to the crap that usually gets stuck in the noggin. That Jellyfish song is pretty good, too. Such an odd video tho. Trying to be like 4 things at once and really only succeeding at looking like I's expect Sniff N The Tears to look.
Agree, one of the most underrated bands of all times!! Great vocals, harmony, musicianship and song writing. On par with anybody. If you like Jelly Fish and are into underrated bands, check out Crack the Sky's first two albums.. The original line up and first two discs were incomparable! Don't judge them on their later live crap on you tube, check out this track from their first album here on you tube "She's a Dancer"

I wouldn't say they were underrated as much as just not around for long enough to become extremely popular. Bellybutton came out in 1990 didn't it?.. And they were disbanded in like 94 or 95. I first heard of them on MTV, and that was when MTV was actually still dedicated to playing music videos and not reality shows.
Saw them perform live in 1993. Such a shame they never got the props they deserved. They were excellent
Heard they really put on a great show...just regret never seeing them live myself...should have been so much bigger.
Wish i could've seen Jellyfish.
One of the best albums of growing up that I ever heard. I loved this band and their melodies...sadly missed. You don't get songs like this nowadays...

but they don't twerk and use autotune ....therefore they are trashed
Far more talented than any of those Bands.

This band should have been awarded a lifetime of Grammy's.
not in todays world.......sad
Not enough lyrics about partying or booty.

Alwats reminded Me of Howard Jones(a compliment).
What's sad is that grunge music was SUPPOSED to be against all of that stuff. Corporate music, etc. But it became the epitome of it.
Gosh I never get tired of this song, still gives me chills like it did when I was 16....
Melodies and harmonies are very Beatle like. Underrated band for sure.
Now would be a great time for this band to make a comeback.
I totally agree with you.
Indeed
The song writing and quality of everything is pretty timeless. The world could be ready for them finally.
Now, too.
Four years later: Anytime is right for a Jellyfish comeback!!
I bought this album during my sophomore year in high school. It changed my life forever.
Good choice for lifechanger.
Freshman year❤
what type of backgrounds do you usually put on zoom calls? i know a guy who used to use ones just like they have in this video
these guys shoulda been huge
Couldn't get out of their own way.
But then they'd have a hard time finding these outfits at thrift shops
There were too many bands around back then, extremely competitive and had to tour non stop.
Bellybutton is loaded with great songs. Bedspring Kiss is a personal fave.
I saw Jellyfish open for The Offspring at Club Babyhead in Providence, RI in '93.
What a show!
Holy shit. You did not just say that. I haven't been to baby head in a millenia. Hahaa. RI my home state!!!! So many good bands came to the clubs in providence back in the day. Damn I miss it. .
Bellybutton and Spilled Milk are "no skips" types of albums.
One of my favorite songs of all time...their music is ageless.
These videos are so atrociously 90s but the music is intoxicating. I’m so glad I found out about these dudes
its aged very well. what an earworm. what hooks

Jellyfish was amazing live in concert. They were the first concert I ever attended.
Nice!!!

I was 15 yrs old when this was released. 😱
My goodness, time goes faster & faster with every few years.
Still love this song. Saw them live @ the 5th Ave back in the day.
There is more arrangement in a song, than in a whole CD with other bands.
They should’ve been huge! In a way it might be good with only two albums. They are precious.
Can't believe this is like 30 years old. Where have all the time gone?
Awesome bass line. Had to learn it the minute I heard it. I am almost 37 yrs old and just now hearing this song and band
one of my most FAV Jelly songs.. infinite talent..
catchy little tune, First heard it in the winter 1990 on the radio, I was fixing the radiator on my 69 Chevelle so I could go get a sack ;)
,,,,,,and kit lessons, at last.
A sack of... Donuts? Flour? Potatoes? Woe?
Would love to see these guys get back & write more songs. So much talent !
Their music was way ahead of their time.
what a great game...they didn´t get the success they deserved. Pure talent.
If a song can get you high this is it. At least for me along with several of their songs.

riiiiiiight.
@James That would be hilarious! I don't mean to judge, but that comment made me laugh.
@James You are very welcome James
I had this song and School of Fish/Three Strange Days on just about every mix tape I made in 1990.
this song is a gem. 💗
Im 42 and just discovered these guys now
Same. And I've been a FoW fan since '97. How did I miss Jellyfish??
1.11 Andy Sturmer plays a hi-hat hit that opens and closes. How does he do that standing up? I'm guessing it gets lost live.
Loud enough for two! Why why why aren't they still creating!!! 😭💚🤯
Because sometimes the best things are free.

my favorite song by them. i think they were at their best when they kept it relatively simple
It is a crying shame that more kids will hear music from "One Direction" than they will ever hear from Jellyfish.
