Some are party centric. Others candidate centric. But what is fundamental to all democracies is this. A candidate needs a compelling message. They must advertise the message. They need money to pay for the advertising. They need the help of influential people to run for Governor. Those truths apply to every candidate for Governor, regardless of where they are running.
