I'm an old Nerdfighter, and I've been voting in Illinois for nearly 20 years. This is the easiest voting choice I've ever had to make. I'd also like to mention that so far I have a perfect record of NOT voting for Governors who would later serve time in prison, and that's not something most Illinois voters can claim.
Awesome. DFTBA!
I grew up in New Jersey. Got the heck out before I was able to vote, because I'm pretty sure it's impossible not to elect a crook there! (though it's getting better i think) Grats on your voting record!
Hahahahaha
This hits home. My mom is an elected official, and she's definitely not one of those "typical politician" types. She was an accountant, and then she was a CFO of a local college, and then our home got annexed into the local city and she got _really_ pissed off, and decided "well, I might as well run, because I can't change anything from where I stand right now". She was elected onto the city council that year, and then ran for mayor of our city in 2010, and she won. Then she won again, running unopposed in 2014. And then this past year, she ran again and managed to win 80% of the votes in our city because she's just really, really good at her job. Also, she takes zero campaign donations, instead encouraging people to donate to a local charity instead. Basically, 1. I'm really proud of my mom (can you tell?) and also 2. we 100% need non-politician politicians, because they actually care, have a real world knowledge and experience outside of politics, and are often experts in things non-political, and can share this expertise with a wider variety of people on a platform that can make a difference. Also John, if you ever want to interview or talk to a mayor, hit me up, I can make that connection for you.
CulpFiction She sounds awesome :)
Yeah, that is a cool story.
She seriously is the best. I'm super proud of her and everything she's accomplished to make our city even better.
Sounds like a great person! I hope you tell your mom how proud you are :)
I do as much as I can without being annoying haha. I'll call her tonight and tell her again though, thanks for the reminder! :)
Daniel Biss? Is he the same Daniel Biss from Brotherhood 2.0 who John called to calculate the cost of getting rid of his carbon footprint? 16 x 6 = 96; $96/year.
Holy smokes! How far he has come!
Yep, definitely the same Daniel Biss.
I remember when Daniel was our resident mathematician because John forgot there aren’t 100 minutes in an hour. I’m a current resident of Chicago and while I’m registered in CT, I hope he wins. I love what he stands for and think he’s a true and honest guy who can do what’s best. To me, he’s a breath of fresh air in a currently toxic political atmosphere.

Martin Ayala I’m not registered in Illinois so you should probably say that to other people.

I tried to find my original comment about Daniel from when I watched the 2007 videos but I can't find it. Someone likes it occasionally and I'm reminded of it. I said that Daniel is made of awesome because John calls him to ask him basic math questions then hangs up and as far as we know Daniel never complains. I'm guessing that's where Daniel learned the patience and resilience required to be a politician.
Vote Kennedy
Omg, you wouldnt believe this but your comment was on the puff pwns gravity!! I read your comment and i was like youre right, such a nice guy, wonder what happened to him, so i searched and here he is!! And here you are!!! So glad you are still a part of this community, i feel like i traveled through time through your comments
SophieHatterLeFay Kennedy is the most straight up candidate by pointing out flaws in the system. He is risking major support cause he runs as anti establishment guy. Why you ask? cause he cares.
Vote Kennedy
Chris Kennedy called Biss a "career politician" in last night's debate. I'm not entirely sure Chris Kennedy knows who Biss is. Then again, Kennedy also tried to paint himself as "the only candidate who’s not cozy with the Democratic establishment", so I'm not sure Chris Kennedy knows who Chris Kennedy is either...
Kennedy has helped serve college boards and. helped with some major food program that gives to poor. if you criticize someone, its gonna have to be pritzker
I just registered to vote for the first time today!
Soph wooohoooo way to go!!!!
Congrats!

It's only a matter of time before there are Nerdfighters in the White House!
How do you know there isn't already?
Veronica S I can imagine people complexly, but not *that* complexly.
Biss 2028; who says no?
It's probably a matter of at least three years :) -John
Does Obama count as a Nerdfighter? He was a big fan of Hank.
It probably took until some point during my college career to realize that people are people, which sounds like a dumb thing to say. Politicians are people too, and I hope during this election cycle, we, as Americans, will step up to the polls like never before. It's time for a good change. We need more Daniel Biss types in politics.
+++
Forget it, your fairy tale blue wave isn't happening. Tell me why should I vote for the Democrats? They literally have no platform other than WE HATE TRUMP and NRA IS EVIL.
As a Daniel, this was strangely enjoyable to listen to you talk about how awesome “Daniel” is.
Daniel Turner you're really great, daniel
I always feel a little strange when he talks about Sarah.
As another Daniel, I thank you for congratulating my success, Daniel
Daniel is now the mayor elect of Evanston! So great to see good people getting elected. 🥳
Most important question: If he becomes governor, will Daniel Biss still have time to confirm that very large numbers are very large for the Bank of Nerdfighteria??
ringrrl Asking the important questions!
Oh yes I can't see him getting too big for that! Maybe President Biss might be too busy, but even then I suspect I could get a call in for emergency math help. -John

I just turned 18 and live in Chicago! I'm voting for Daniel!!! #BissPlease
Your hashtag game is on point!! Congrats on turning 18 and voting!! Good for you! DFTBA!
Here from the future! He’s mayor now of Evanston, Illinois as of May 10, 2021. How time flies!
Haven't heard that Biss was running for governor until now, but definitely gonna do some research now! Thanks John--DFTBA!
As an aspiring politician who doesn't fit the typical criterion that most impose on a position of leadership, this meant a lot to me, John. Thank you for suggesting that politicians are in fact people and that we should focus more on their policies rather than our societal standards that have little to do with the responsibilities they are running for.
We need more of you! My mom is mayor of the city that I'm from, and very, very atypical politician as well. I personally think that's part of what makes her so awesome. Keep it up!
Good luck with the politics!
That's awesome! Studies have shown (check out Lawless/Fox's work on this) that people who don't fit the typical profile win in equal proportion to those who do. Our (the US's) political leaders look the way they do not because they're more likely to win, but because they're more like to run in the first place. All this to say: you are awesome and keep up the good work!
Mister Apple thank you so much!
CulpFiction thank you! I'm sure your mother is a great woman, please send my regards to her as she is a walking inspiration for those like me 2:}D
I will be enthusiastically voting for Biss in this primary. I started following his campaign when you originally mentioned he was running, and followed a couple other candidates too. Ive joined my College Democrats and done research on this primary. I do honestly think that Biss would make a great governor of IL
Please investigate his position on the reductions in state pensions. (For those working 25+ years and not eligible for social security.)
seh221 I hope I'll see you at the College Democrats of Illinois convention this April!
Vote Kennedy
His position on state pensions is his greatest mistake that he has more than enough owned up to and made his retribution. That's a BS argument. Anybody who's worked in the state capital on progressive causes know how important Biss' legislating is. And anybody who's done Illinois field work knows how important a working class, anti corporate gubernatorial candidate is. And Seh, please don't just do your research, go out and volunteer! It's the best way to help and it feels incredible being a part of a team. It doesn't require you to dedicate your life. One hour helps.
When I saw the title I was hoping it was Daniel Biss!! I'll tell all my friends back in IL to look into voting for him :)
Bonnie Jo I just wanted to let you know that I really love how you phrased this. I love that you are using your opportunities to inform your friends about Biss. But more than that - telling your friends to ‘look into’ voting for him is telling them they should understand and care about the vote they make, and not vote for someone just because they were told to - that is truly awesome.
YES! I don't want them to mindlessly vote just because I said to. But I think it's reasonable to say - I like this guy, you should check him out. And then vote for him or don't.
I love Daniel I think he's made of awesome I just wish I could vote for him.
Thoughts And feels Same I live in Illinois but I'm too young :((
I'll cast my vote for all three of us, then! I'm 22 in Illinois what a time to be alive! 😂
I will vote for you (well not literally) but I live in IL and I am a proud Illinois resident ready to vote for BISS
Biss is my first choice for governor
Thoughts And feels contribute to his campaign! I'm an Illinois voter and I am 100% behind Biss and can tell you that grassroots donations will fund this campaign to the finish line
YESS!!! Also so excited Daniel is the first person I get to cast a vote for!!!
Daniel is WAAaaayyyy better than Pritzker. I can't wait to vote in the primary as well!
As an Illinois resident, I took an interest in Biss' campaign when you mentioned him in a previous video. Now, I am huge supporter for many of the reasons you expressed. He is the kind of person we need in office. Thank you, John. Vote Biss.
What a wonderful message, John! I live in Chicago and will be voting for Biss :) he is definitely what Illinois needs.
Working as a volunteer on Daniel Biss's campaign has been one of the best experiences of my life. I don't think there's anything more endearing than listening to a candidate explaining policy while juggling literal fire. #Bissplease
I'm so excited that he's running! On the one hand I'm sad that I moved out of Illinois and therefore cannot vote for him, on the other hand I am so glad to be out of Illinois. As a state employee who had serious medical bills out of state, the two years without a budget made my life miserable and my financial future uncertain and I can never forgive them for that and I will never be moving back. Still, I hope Daniel wins!
Sad to lose my state senator but super happy about the opportunity to share him with the rest of Illinois! He has my vote (again!)
My mother is actually running for Daniel's original seat in the State House in the 17th District of Illinois! She was on the local school board for multiple terms before deciding to run. If all goes well, I hope both her and Daniel will be in Springfield soon!
As someone who has been on the Biss campaign since the summer(when we were pulling a entire 6%) it been so amazing to see people want a change in IL politics. People thought that a middle class state senator had no chance at winning an election in IL, but now with 28 days left we are in a close second place behind a man who has given himself over $50 million. I was honored that the campaign let me, some 16 yr old join and take on some major responsibilities. I have talked Daniel a few times and the fact that he knows the name to some HS junior still makes me freak out a bite every time.
I was super excited when I heard Daniel Biss was running because he seemed super progressive and I thought that's exactly what Illinois needs, but when he dropped his running mate over supporting BDS I wasn't as excited to vote for him (he is still the best option). But it made me feel very alienated as a Palestinian American.
Woah. Never been this early!
Also: Nerdfighter’s Residential Mathematician!!!
Nerdfighters in government? YES PLEASE!
Unless Daniel Biss participated in the 2017 Nerdfighteria Census, there are other Nerdfighters holding public office. See Hank's 2017 Census Analysis on hankschannel, starting at 29:30. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/b9fS7vUP-yw/v-deo.htmlm30s

Hey John! Figs AND DATES ARE NOT THE SAME FRUIT! (Figs aren't even fruits - but rather inverted flowers - IT'S REALLY COOL) You mentioned that on the pod earlier (episode: 128 AARTcoin) and I thought I'd tell you! :D!

I'm from Illinois, but I live overseas now. After an enormous headache that was voting in 2016 while overseas, I was HEAVILY debating skipping this next election since all the things on the ballot are "Would you like corrupt politician #1 or corrupt politician #2?". But if he manages to get past the primaries, I'll totally deal with it to vote for him.
A lovely volunteer working for the Biss campaign came to my door last summer and informed me of his policies and his background and after doing some research, I have been supporting him ever since. It's good to hear that Daniel Biss is as great of a person as I've assumed and it's nice knowing someone I look up to also supports him. Can't wait to vote for him next month!
People like him is the reason why the government is still working
Mad respect! I mean, a lot of young people, me included would stay far away from politic, just watching politicians on TV would make me lost my appetite, let alone interact with them on daily basis
Voted today in WI. Local elections are important.
I was born and raised in Illinois and I'd really love to have a competent and honest governor.
Relatable. My earliest memory of Illinois politics was our governor being imprisoned for corruption.
Same! I looked at Daniel's fairly in depth wikipedia and he seems to be pretty centered and willing to negotiate. So maybe he'd be more likely to sign off on a budget he didn't love rather than cause yet another budget crises?
I actually got to see him speak at our library. He’s got an answer for everything, but they’re not insane answers, they’re achievable. I believe him. He’s trustworthy.
Didn’t Daniel write the theorem for An Abundance Of Katherine’s?
+
+
Yep he's amazing
+
YEAH HE DID
Illinois resident here! And I will be voting for Biss!! And what you said about TV ads is so true! JB is all over my Hulu so much that I can recite the ad back to you. It’s ridiculous🤮
John just so you know, as a former student activist who constantly interned, lobbied, and organized in the capitol -- Daniel Biss has been the foremost champion of the people I have ever met in that building (I missed Obama by a couple years). All of the activists and full time working class heros are behind him for a reason.
John, I know this is going to get buried, but I need to say that I really respect and am thankful for your and Hank's habit of saying things like "Vote!" instead of "Vote for Daniel!" I admire that about you- the fact that you don't talk people what to believe, but instead, present information and allow us to draw our own conclusions. Also, you're just fantastic humans as far as I can tell. I'm genuinely thankful for what the two of you do here, and also with education via crashcourse and scishow and the numerous other projects that are a part of the Complexly family. DFTBA 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Is Daniel the man who helped him with the maths in An Abundance Of Katherines?
I'm like 80% sure yes
yup!
Vote Kennedy
Respectfully, I will not. But you can certainly feel free to!
+Emma R. R. as long as jb isn't nominated then I will be fine
Hands down THE best political video I've ever seen! It explains the dichotomy of our difficult relationship with public servants. I can neither throw the first stone~nor offer my other cheek to these folks who, I believe, at the beginning of their careers really do want to help people. I have felt this way for years. A person ran for provincial (I'm in Ontario Canada) parliament in my riding. He'd been an activist, agitator and generally a pain in the keester for politicians. He won handily. We had such hopes for this guy to enact and obtain real changes for rural inhabitants, like us. Number one was the cost of hydro. Two years after being elected we heard he had voted for an increase in hydro costs. (our hydro bill was already over $300/month). Come the next election he was defeated soundly and actually left public life altogether. dRUMPh's statement "Who knew health care could be so complicated" reminded me of him. He basically said once he was elected he quickly realized there wasn't much he could do. Such a disappointment.
So if your Friend is that good a politician, you need him, desperately! We could use a few like him too.

I recently moved to Illinois for grad school and got to meet Daniel Biss at the big student activities fair last August. He was super cool and was pleased that I knew him through vlogbrothers, not just Illinois stuff. Great guy, can't wait to vote for him!
Why I love the vlogbrothers community: even on a video about politics, everything is positive and chill.
Biss is awesome... I can't wait to vote for him
same! Illinois Nerdfighters FTW
Vote Kennedy
Why?
In my opinion, he's smart and isn't corrupt like other candidates.
I'm a UChicago alum, and I'm proud to say I just registered to vote in Illinois today!
Thank you, Daniel Biss, for helping us humanize politicians. I didn't realize until now how I have been degrading or worshipping certain people, when in fact they are but men, as fleshy and awkward as myself.
It's tough at times, particularly NOW, but we can at least try. This is one good thing we have as humans: we can always, at the very least, try.
Daniel Biss has my support and vote! I signed to get him on the ballot and adore his positions!
vote Kennedy please. you want madigan out, well biss has voted for some of madiganss proposals
Martin Ayala I gave no indication that I want Madigan out.
Yay!!! Thank you! I will be sharing this widely to my friends here in Illinois. It's beyond exciting to be able to vote for such a qualified, caring candidate.
I am SO excited to vote for Daniel in the primary. I caught a glimpse of him at my school (UIUC) and I was SOOOO hype to almost-meet the guy who did the math in An Abundance of Katherines (and the guy who will hopefully fix my state government). I've been campaigning for him among my friends since he announced he was running. Thanks for helping him out, John. You're doing us Illinoisians a big favor. (P.S .Any other UIUC Nerdfighters in the comments?)
When was he here?? ( I'm a UIUC Nerfighter btw)
LOL! Hello, fellow Illini! It was like two weeks ago. A bunch of people took a bus with him to early vote. I saw him getting on the bus with some people from campus Democrats and I geeked out just a little bit :)
I live in Florida and yesterday noticed that the American flag was at full mast. It hasn't even been a week since the Parkland shooting and now there are pundits who are calling the survivors of this tragedy "actors". and then i saw this video, and more importantly, read through the comment section (only comment section i allow myself in) and was reminded that there is HOPE. Thank you, from an old nerdfighter. Keep up the good fight!
Very much noticing how excellent John's glasses are after listening to the pod. Nice jaw!

I remember in 2010 when he showed up on our doorstep to talk to my parents about voting for him for house of rep and now I'm old enough to vote for him for actual governor. I'm so excited and proud to be from a family that has been supporting him a long time.
I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and I walk dogs for a living. I see signs for Daniel Biss in yards all over the place when I'm walking dogs, and it makes me smile every time I see them!
Coincidentally, my name is also Daniel. Like your friend Daniel, I also have a love for mathematics.
And where your friend Daniel managed to earn his PHD in Math from MIT and gain job as a professor in the University of Chicago by the age of 25, I am 26 and still living with my parents.
While it is initially disheartening to hear you speak of his successes where I have so far failed, it's largely because I hear the number 25 and think of him as a peer, when that's not the case. The pictures you showed of him, his hair grayed with years of wisdom, reminded me that I still have many years to pursue my dreams. It's never to late to climb new mountains, even if others have climbed them first.
As an Illinois voter, I gotta say that Biss is not only an person who seems undeniably qualified for the job, he’s the first “not a politician” type politician who, to me, seems genuine. And his policy proposals are good for Illinois. I like him because he’s genuine, but ALSO a very competent applicant for the job. He’s got my vote 🗳
I’ve gone canvassing for daniel Biss several times. I love his message and how progressive he is
Excited to vote for Biss and encouraging all my friends and family to do the same. Southern Illinois for Biss!!
Thank you John! I met Daniel a couple of weeks ago when I went to watch him speak. Thank you so much for helping. We need BISS! #Bissplease
As someone who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, my standards for politicians is low. Although I don't agree with Daniel's stance on every issue, I would be genuinely happy to have Daniel govern Illinois simply because he is good person. I do support his environmental activism and would love to hear more about how he will cut property taxes and improve the appeals process. Hopefully I can be here for the live stream on Thursday!
Holy cow, I had NO idea he was in politics now... guess that's what I get for being out of the loop! If I lived in Illinois, he's exactly the type of person I'd want as a governor. You could be pretty damn sure those budgets would be checked VERY thoroughly! Best of luck to him and his campaign team.
It is extremely important who's interests politicians have in mind. Billionaire and Millionaires can survive with high taxes, but many working people can't survive without social services or significant raises. I looked at Daniel's website and am pleased he supports Medicare for All. If he's honest about pushing for that, and I'm sure you are since he's your friend, then I hope he goes far.
Anyone who is willing to work to get our state out of debt and sort out the state budget, then I'm down for Daniel. I'm going to check out his website. Thank's for this, John.
Good luck to him. That’s pretty cool.
I plan on running for Texas State Representative in 2020 as a either a Republican or Independent. The guy who has the seat right now, has had it for almost 50 years,he was on the same ballot as Nixon was running for president. The Democrat going against him, he has a good heart, but it's not what the people of west Texas want. So I plan to put in my bid for 2020 when I am of age to run.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! I live in Illinois and am now old enough to vote. For the last 6+ months JB Pritzker has been in a TV commercial practically everyday. Either one that has been constructed by his campaign (being asked light-hearted questions about his favorite bands and movies) or ones that are against him funded by Bruce Rauner (featuring secret FBI wiretap conversations where Pritzker is talking with the Rod Blagojevich who was impeached and sent to prison for corruption) Before watching this video I had no idea who Daniel Biss was so THANK YOU.
I just realized how much work goes into these videos and how well written they are. Thank you for your hard work Vlog Bro's, stay awesome.
Thank you for saying it’s hard to make friends as an adult. I don’t have any friends where I live, and my only three friends live 200 miles away. Always nice to know that even when you feel lonely, you’re not the only one.
Just voted for Biss. Looking forward to the results!
Thank you for this optimism about politics. I can now vote and will have to read and analyze people to decide who I want to run our government. I appreciate your thoughts and mindset about this topic. Good luck to Daniel as I hope more intellectuals will learn to run for office as well. -Jessi the Texan
Can't wait in 6 years when we get a "when your friend runs for President"" video
I go to Northwestern and I just switched to voting in Illinois and I’m excited to vote for Daniel Biss.
As an Illinois resident and a marginal nerdfighter, I've been waiting for this ever since I found out you two were friends. Thank you, John!
This is gives me hope for now I now Rick Santorum, Pennsylvania representative, and that a smart guy got into American politics. Go world!
I am a 17-and-2/3-year-old from Illinois. I have been following this gubernatorial election since November with my political science class. I was lucky enough to have the experience of volunteering for the best campaign-knocking door-to-door surveying. I was surprised to find so many people were uninformed about the election (the primary on March 20) and many didn’t even know it has happening. I understand that in this current political environment some are apathetic and for whatever reason they decide not to vote. We are are lucky enough to live in a country where we have the power to vote and I wish more people would take it advantage of that privilege. I am proud to be able to vote in this election (for the first time!) and hope that your video, John, might inspire others to vote as well.
I live in Illinois, and am tired of the rampant corruption festering within. 4 of our last 7 governors have gone to prison, and we impeached our first one ever because he tried to sell a senate seat. Our state is in need of some real reform as we have the most people moving out/leaving, the highest medical malpractice (insurance cost), some of the highest tax burden, our bonds are the lowest ever rated for a state (just above junk bonds), our political groups are spending more refusing to make any sort of change (unable to agree on a budget), one of five states with a year-over-year unemployment rate increase, and are generally in a downward spiral. Daniel certainly has his work cut out for him.
You should absolutely talk about who endorses him and what the groups stand for! Not only to show that he's a great candidate but also to inform voters from other states what to look for in their candidates!
First thing I did was look up if he's a Justice Democrat (meaning he can't take Pac donations, especially corporate money..) and I wonder if there are more organisations/ groups that stand for similar things that support him and what other politicians they support.
Daniel is ‘lucky’ to have you. This is the best advertisement anyone can get. Honest and genuine
Mr. Biss, I wish you the absolute best of luck in the Illinois gubernatorial primaries. (If I could vote for you, I'd do so in a heartbeat, but alas...I'm in Texas and you're running in Illinois.)
Couldn't ask for a nicer endorsement of our guy! Thanks, John. -- Love, Illinois
Soooo excited for Daniel, and literally cannot wait to support him at the primaries in March!!!
Illinois voter here! I hadn't decided who I was going to vote for, yet, but, I gotta be honest, knowing he's a friend of yours makes me MUCH more inclined to vote for him. He's running against a Pritzker, so it could be a tough road for him!
Been following Daniel Biss for a while now and was really excited to see him on my ballot today. Good luck to him!
Illinois resident here, excitedly voting for Daniel Biss!
John, I do have a question, though. How do you feel about Biss co-sponsoring SB1 (disaster of a pension bill)? I can't reconcile how smart I believe he is with how not-smart that choice was.
It might behoove you to add that the Facebook Chat is 12pm CST. (The timezone used in Illinois) I'll set an alert to watch it. I am a State Worker from Illinois and the current governor has been very bad for me and my co-workers.
Very cool and happy for your friend. :) I can relate to how you feel. I had a friend run for Mayor of our town once. He didn't win but I was really pulling for him. I put several of his bumper stickers on my car and even still have a few I am saving for the memories. :D - Heidi
I can't wait to vote for Biss soon! I'm so glad you've introduced him to us John; he's a great candidate
Really thoughtful video John. I'm so sick of the political ads here in St Louis (aka NOT ILLINOIS) that have basically been Pritzker and Rauner at each other's throats to get like 5% of the audience to vote for them. While I can't vote for him, I am rooting for him.
I've always loved vlogbrothers in normal circumstances, but wow, as a high person, John's videos are blowing my mind. It's like listening to a song with perfect rhythm and perfect resolution.
I FINALLY GET TO VOTE FOR DANIEL BISS!!! At last, a silver lining to moving back to my IL hometown.
I just gained a huge amount of hope for my home state and will definitely be telling people here to vote
I'm actually planning on participating as a first time voter in the Illinois election. I remember seeing Daniel in a video a couple years ago, and I had no idea he made it this far, which probably goes to show that I need to do a lot more studying between now and November.
Let's be real, this is a damn good reminder that people are people, even if they seem like something more. A well-fitted suit, a charade of "professionalism," and a lofty title doesn't make anyone perfect, less human, or less fallible. I think, in light of a lot going on in the world, this is an important message to keep in mind.
I canvass for Biss often, but John Green has now amplified my passion 10 fold. I really believe he can win.
I just want to say I'm really enjoying the comments on these videos. Even people who disagree are being very polite and civil. Go Nerdfighteria!
Hey John, I just finished reading Turtles All The Way Down, it was so mindful and mind blowing, I loved it so much!! So I just wanted to thank you, with so much gratitude. you are an amazing writer and UA-camr x
