I admit it...I tried climbing roof with ladder today...never happened. Ladder wobbled, and too short as it turns out. The ease when you stepped off ladder onto roof was awesome. Geez, I love UA-cam.!
This is a great video, both great ideas. bungee tying the ladder to the gutter rail and the 2x4 footing. I got up there other day and totally froze up on the dismount because i didn't trust my ladder would be stable enough. This is great advice for that homeowner who wants to make sure he's paying the right amount for the repair work but also doesn't want a trip to the emergency room for shattered ankles. good post bro.

My late uncle was a Captain in his fire dept. I could never do that job since I have a fear of heights and do NOT like the sight of blood! Credit to you and the others in your department for the fine job that all of you do. You earn every penny!

im glad i watched this before attempting to get on my roof again...i knew i wasnt doing it right an im glad i listened to my gut an didnt attempt to go from my ladder to the roof(ladder way to short)...felt dumb searching for this but im glad i did before my second attempt....thank you for your insight brother!

I will add one more thing I discovered, Do NOt leave shingles or pieces lying on shingles they are worse than a banana peel. great video, I'm going up the roof after coffee, your a lifesaver. Great idea tying your ladder off to the gutter, however for a tradesman your ladder is going to scratch the paint off the guttering. A non slip thin rubber mat will prevent this if put up using a step ladder first. Next, no matter how experienced you are, if you are working above head height, put a bicycle helmet on and tighten the chin strap. If you then fall you will probably recover from a broken arm or leg, but may not recover from a fractured skull. Think about it !
Good stuff, nice to see someone who knows how to do things properly, knows how easy it is to do them improperly without knowing, and genuinely wants to help people do better and live safer. I really hope youtube supplements your income something fierce because your basic human decency demonstrated by your want to help people in this really shines through and in my opinion really makes you worth more to people than your job earnings may otherwise indicate. I always tell people that ladder safety is no laughing matter. You want laughs, go to a comedy club. You want to save your life, abide by ladder safety. Some people won't listen though (like my roommate) but still it's important that videos like this are up and available. I appreciate the effort and I love how it's shot. BRAVO

Good video Elvis..You should also mention ladder ratio...Place the ladder base at a 1:4 ratio from the vertical (horizontal/vertical). For every 4 feet of working length the base of ladder should be 1 foot out from the top support ...
Nice one bud, Ive had some long time roofers giggle when I bungee my ladder down. Until there's blows over in the wind and they gotta jump off da roof! :P Our company has been doing it similar to you since day one....is one of the most important safety steps you can take concerning ladders, good to see it being done.

Great video. I had to climb up on my roof that is about a 2:1 pitch at a about a height of 12 feet. I'm about to make the transition to the roof and I thought "this isn't safe" because I knew I was going to loose traction. I did a search for "how to climb onto a roof from a ladder." I like to think I'm a pragmatic person, but nailing the cleat onto the roof is something a weekend DIY guy wouldn't think of. Many thanks!!!

Nice ladder technique. I never thought of using a piece of 2x4 to step off on. Thanks for the video. The only bad part was when the jet was flying by. LOL
Thanks-I do that all the time but I usually run the bungee around on leg of the ladder then across to the other side so that there is a wrap on each side. You feel much more secure. A ladder sliding sideways will give you a heart attack.
I like this and the roof safety video. We have some pretty high up gutters in our new house, and this will help keep my wife and I safe. Out of curiosity since we will eventually need to paint the house. What are your thoughts on the safety of ladder jacks and a ladder plank for a 2.5 story house? I figure I could easily do this without the need for scaffolding, and then anchor a safety harness kit up onto the roof for safety.
Hi Elvis... Great vid...very informative. One question...how about ladder placement on a roof to get to the next level of the roof or in my case, paint a wall. Its the attic level wall over my second story below the garage overhang and the garage roof comes out too far to safely use a single ladder so my only option is to place a second ladder on the roof. I do have a 1ft outcropping to secure the ladder to. Would a 2x4 be enough to brace the bottom? Thanks.
i like your thinking about putting the wood to put your foot there, when i was helping my grandpa put a metal tin roof on his home we put 2x4s up there under the tin and i put my foot there to make sure i got up safely
I like the tips but have a question. My spouting is put on with plastic straps. Are those plastic ones safe to put the tarp straps around or would you suggest using something else? Also is it safe to use a bungee cord with medal hooks as an alternative to tarp straps?
Great job on this. Have you considered doing a review video of the Level-EZE automatic ladder leveler made by Jershon Inc? Seems with your experience you would be able to do a great job since you could appreciate the added safety and convenience the leveler gives.

I would also add if the ladder is older just replace it, I fell off a 6ft. alum. on level sidewalk that just collapsed from too many years of use on uneven ground outside. 2 broken ribs and a helicopter flight due to a punctured lung was my cost for not doing it sooner.

Question: Which way does the ladder face? I've seen both types of training videos, where the extension piece was in front as well as in back...eg either "reach around ladder and pull rope" or just "pull the rope in front of you". I don't want to die. Who's correct?
My ladder is too short .. But I only discovered that after climbing on to the roof to retrieve my daughter's toy. The fun began when I tried to get off the roof ..Now I am not scared of heights or of ladders .. I have used to rope ladders to get off a ship in the middle of a sea to get on to a boat. That is pretty scary stuff... But not as scary as trying to get on to ladder with nothing to hold on other than the gutter. I got down safely , but this could have ended badly.
