He uses a variety of materials, tools and supplies that are listed in the video. He goes through the preparation stages and the way through the process of neutralizing the flux.

    Thanks for the detailed video. This is the best video I have seen on soldering guards. If I can make a request, I would like to see how you fit the guard and radius the ricasso .

    Request. Layout of the lines on the loveless double edge. Also making the guards fit up and cutting your notch for the guard. Great vids and one of the best on soldering guards.

    Thanks for sharing your technique with an old timer hobbyist. I always try to do my best but have been very frustrated trying to solder stainless steel guards. This is the first video I have seen showing all of the materials and techniques that you use. You have come a long way since I saw you last at the OKCA show in Eugene in 2011.

    I work in the acid plant, to help you out all you need to do to nute the acid is to just put a q-tip in water with baking soda and it will nute the acid, so you don't need to boil it....very nice knives.....

      The flux can hide pretty well so I like to boil them for a couple minutes. If you’re sure the flux is only on the surface then a q-tip would work just fine. Unfortunately the underside of the guard can get quite messy and boiling with baking soda does the trick great. Thanks for the comment, stay safe at the acid plant!!

    Very nice work! A question about flux and paste. I have done a lot of plumbing soldering and use paste flux, but am not sure what the difference is between the flux and paste you use.
    Is there solder in the paste, and the flux is only flux?

      Thank you! Correct the solder paste is a mix of the solder material and liquid flux, and the flux is just more flux. I also use solder wire just to make things easier.

    I have a bit of a nit picky question. I notice that the solder paste you use has the consistency of peanut butter (or close). When I stir mine up really well it remains soupy. Did you remove some of the liquid from on top of the solids before stirring to make it thicker?

    Hey Zac, what kind of solder wire are you using? I know Bob Loveless used a bismuth solder, but I cant find any in Austria.

    I don’t stir mine. The liquid is just flux, which I will add my own later. I tip my jar to move all the flux to one side. Then I just dip in with a toothpick and scrape up what I need.

    Great info. And I love the craftsmanship. How hot does the heat gun need to reach? Is that a special heat gun?

      It depends on the melting point of your solder. Just make sure your heat gun will get hot enough to melt it.

      I believe it’s Castolin Eutectic brand, I don’t remember the type. It is in my soldering video though. 👍

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your videos are really helpful. Where did you get that reamer and fancy chuck? The only similar looking reamer i can find online is a “violin peg hole reamer”. Thanks!

      I get most of my tooling from McMaster-Carr, they’re prices are very reasonable. Sometimes I’ll go through MSC. You’ll want one that can cut metal

    Do you use a 3/0 taper reamer for 1/8" pins? I've set pins before but only with a straight hole...or sometimes I have put a small countersink...but I can see the tapered reamer is the way to go.

      ended up taking a #30 drill and slightly tapering about 3/4" of it...seems to work fine for the 1/8" pins. I did manage to punch out the pins that were showing and redid them with this taper drill. After peening and polishing they disappeared just fine. Thanks for your great videos.

    How do I find paste like that? All I can find online is the "rosen/wax" type.

    ヒルトの下側をヒートすべき何度もやる意味がない。
    日本では最近エポキシ(EPO)
    で行う事が多い。

      返信有り難う。半田が良いことは良く知っています私も40年來ナイフを作っています、加熱の際ブレードの加熱保護やヒルトを加熱しないでグリップ側を加熱しています、また何度も繰り返しをしません。
      丁寧な仕事をして居る事は認めます🎵

      追伸、
      半田の融点温度は錫100%で
      238度C 低温半田で185度C
      少しの時間で、焼戻りますよ
      日本では、温度管理式の電熱器で加熱してますよ。レジェンド、ラブレスさんもそうでした。

    Zac, you make beautiful knives, but regarding peening, you are wrong. When you "peen" a pin into a guard, it is called "upsetting", and the rod expands and becomes wedged in the drilled hole. And regarding countersinking, that is an optional process - if you "peen" a pin in a straight drilled hole, it WILL NOT fall out. I think it was Jim Merritt (Bob Loveless' work partner) who said you'd need explosives to get a properly set pin out of a guard.

    If the fit is tight, is there still a need for soldering. I still have a long way to go with my soldering skills?

      I would always solder, as moisture can still settle in a small gap. Lots of people don’t solder, loveless soldered only some of his knives.
