  • In this Knife Making Tutorial Video Zac Buchanan shows and talks about the process he uses to taper the tangs on his knives.
He uses a 10” wheel and Platen attachments with a 50 grit orange blaze abrasive belt. As well as gloves, face mask respirator and dust collection system for safety purposes.
First Zac hollow grinds the tang on the 10” wheel, hogging out the majority of material. Then he uses the platen to grind in the actual taper of the tang.
We hope you will enjoy this and all the other videos from Zac Buchanan Knives. Thanks for watching and please remember to tap the subscribe and notification buttons to see more content like this. Thanks again!

It has been great watching your videos. Finally a real knifemaker and not another youtuber sharing the same info they have only learned from other untrained youtubers

Excellent explaining and demonstrating!! Thank you!! I take it that it’s important to drill holes in tang first? Any issues with pins aligning on glue up?

Drilling holes is the very first step I do. After you taper the tang you drill the handle material by clamping the blade down, that keeps the tang straight as well as the bolt holes.

I feel like this is the second part of a two part vid, and I missed the first.
Did you mark the tang first before grinding away on it, or are you just eyeballing it?
Either way, how are you going about making sure it's flat and even ?

    Why not forge the tapers?

I don’t do any forging, this is for the stock removal method 👍
