I’m the 3rd generation descendent of a Chinese Delta family. I visit Clarksdale, MS every year and visit the store where my dad/grandfather/great grandfather worked and lived in the family store. My uncle was also murdered on the doorstep of the store. I felt this story. It’s personal. To the families represented in this video, I wish you all the best. We can change things for the better. Notice it was in CA...the only time I got bullied in the same manner was in CA...the Bay Area even. Here's the kicker. I am starting school coming from the Philippines and the "racism" came from the filipinos who were born in the US. They were the ones telling me and my brother to go back home.
We are but people dont treat us as if we are. We don't have the numbers to be protected if we do speak out. We don't have any political clout either. All we have are white ppl telling us that racism doesn't exist.
I cried watching this. My heart is broken for my Asian American people. And it took so long for this type of video to be made highlighting an invisible community. The decades of pain that these ppl must have had to endure. I can see that the older gen don't want to speak out, and frankly, I don't have any animosity towards that. They had to adapt to survive. We live in a somewhat different time now in that we can connect across the internet and for that I have hope we can build stronger ties and collectivize and be a larger part of the American consciousness. Guys like Ryan represent hope of the young generation.
The part that saddened me was the ending when the older gentleman romanticized the 1960s and said it was a great time despite the mistreatment and discrimination they received.

As a Texan of partial Chinese descent, I can relate about the eye stretching gesture being thrown at me by my fellow elementary school students. It hurt me, but I never let it stop me from getting an education.
I am half Thai and Filipino and I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. Moved to Cleveland, Mississippi when I was 9 years old. I was subjected to a lot of verbal and physical abuse because I was Asian. But was able to make friends with both black and white people, which I learned and enjoyed all aspects from their cultures, and they learned from mine. I made the best of things and moved away to start learning a trade. I lived in NYC for the past decade and a half and I can't recall of any confrontations that made me feel uncomfortable about being Asian. The Pandemi hit, so I left NYC and came back to MS. Things are still the same.

Truly sad but amazing at the perseverance. Maybe I was lucky growing up in the Northeast where for the longest time our family was probably one of the first Asians in the area. My friends never really saw the race factor. To them I was just like them. My lunch was usually different than the pb&j. In my whole life only when Trumptard came in did I understand what it felt like be attacked by racism. Unlike my parent's generation where they kept their heads down and worked hard, my generation spoke up. We are Americans as anyone else in this country and stood up to these ignorant racist bullies.
The Chinese and Chinese Americans are still one of the most or the most successful Asians and Asian Americans in the US. Some of the poorest Asians and Asian Americans are the Khmer, Hmong, and Thai.

The difference between the two generations is very evident. I've been binge watching these small documentaries for a bit now and this is what I have observed. The older generations were secure in who they and have no desire to prove that they belonged or even felt that they weren't welcomed. They lived with being discriminated against but also lived knowing that they were there and many also welcomed them. The younger generations, like one of the elders have said, they are too sensitive...often have this feeling that they need to somehow prove that they belong by voicing and being louder. The older generation have proven that they belong in their communities and proud to call themselves southerners even with sometimes being discriminated against. But by living in peace and helping others, they have proven that they belonged...by their actions. I am not sure if being a louder voice will actually help the situation that has happened during Covid and by not being completely honest about the majority of people doing the violence against the Asian communities. I came from the Bay Area...we heard about all the attacks that was happening against the Asian communities.
All asians need to be armed heavily in case of more hate. I recently bought 3 guns during covid. Also being 6’2-220lbs no one really messes with me cuz i would own them but you cant say the same for the elders and women and children.

CBS stands for Columbia Broadcasting Station and is American. It had it's origins with the Columbia Records. You're confusing it with the Canadian Broadcasting Channel (CBC) which is Canada's national broadcaster.

Reporting on anti Asian hate crimes isn’t creating division - the division was clearly already there. The attacks and slurs mentioned in this video happened before this film was made, so I don’t see how this particular video created division when it’s obvious it already existed. It sounds like you don’t want these things to be covered. Why do you want to ignore the hate experienced by the people in this video? If you had a serious illness would you just pretend it didn’t exist and hope it gets better? No. The only way to make things better is to confront uncomfortable truth so we can learn from them and do better.

Typically Asian Americans have been silent 🤫 about race relations regarding themselves and other groups and that's just a fact, they always benefited from the "model minority" ideal, quiet, hard working, don't make waves, mind their business and remain unseen in alot of ways. They have oppressed others while running their businesses and profited from doing so.....and used surveillance and the police to police black bodies within their businesses and as soon as they face a little hardship it's like woe is me. I'm not saying they don't have their own problems, but they often use their model minority status to harm others. Let us not act like some Asian Americans don't use their status to oppress other races
