There are MANY other costs to running a fast food restaurant than just burger meat and potatoes for fries. Packaging, napkins, cooking oil, napkins, straws, toys for Happy Meals, cleaning supplies, etc. Like it or not, we live in a global economy.
Especially when we could raise our own cattle and grow are own potatoes. But no there’s another agenda. Sad 🌸🇺🇸

My wife and I went to Sonic yesterday. I got their basic hotdog and a small drink, my wife got their basic hamburger and nothing else. The total? Just shy of 11$ after taxes. Yeah , that's the last time we are doing that.
McDonald's used to have $2.99 Extra Value Meals. You can't even get the fries for that now. It's insane how much they charge for a product made from cheap potatoes.

With an air fryer, I toss in ground meat and bacon, cook for awhile, flip the meat, then add cheese and mushrooms. Fattilicious! :D
You can now definitely buy higher quality food and a bigger quantity of food at the grocery store for the same price, or cheaper. Prices are high at the grocery store, but the days are gone of affordable fast food.

@@ThingsyourollupWell... it depends. If you buy in bulk (and I mean bulk) and know your way around the kitchen and can make a few sacrifices at times, then it's reasonably cheaper than fast food/restaurants.
If you're not able to do that, you buy prepackaged food, or worse, have to buy certain ingredients, then your meals are probably going to be break even at best. Tastes better if you can actually cook, but there's been times where I've regretted some culinary decisions.
@@EbonySaints And if you're a single person, cooking in bulk isn't very appetizing unless you like eating the same meal 5x in a row. Like the saying, eat the same gourmet meal that many times continuously and you'll get a sickening reaction to it. I can attest that is exactly what happens when you try this living alone. So you end up making piecemeal food prep and the cost differential is not that much difference than fast food, and often way higher, or at least it was when I remember being in this bucket.

Well, any company is going to pass on costs to its customers. If they have to raise prices, they'll raise prices to pay for it. They aren't going to accept a cut in profit margins. When I was in college (okay, it was a long time ago) the Whopper was 99 cents. I used to buy two, one for lunch and one for dinner. Oh, it also had 3 thick slices of tomato on it back then, not two razor thin slices like now.
Now the value menu no longer exists.

And fines also need to be % based, so rich people can’t just ignore them. First ticket of the year, 1/10th of 1% of annual gross; 2nd ticket, 2/10th of 1%. For someone making $40K, first ticket would be $40. For someone making $20,000,000, first ticket would be $20,000k.
(Minimum would be the poverty line, so out of work people can’t just ignore tickets.)
The numbers given for inflation are way off, I’ve worked part time retail decades ago and even my low wages $11 per hour could still afford fast food prices now. $20 minimum wages only helps the low income; but then again how long should a burger stay at $1, fifty more years when a 12oz can of soda costs more?

I live rural and don't get to fast food much but, I went to Dairy Queen last month and ordered a flamethrower, fries n gravy, drink and small blizzard = $28. I went to A&W last week and Pappa burger w cheese an bacon combo was $24. I will now only go to sit in restaurants and either get steak sandwich or beef deep for less or around the same price.
When I was sixteen earning $1.15 per hour, a burger was .25 cents, fries .11 cents and a shake .25 cents. A full meal for .51 cents. Now at age 79 it cost $15.00 for the same meal. Crazy.
And the workers earn $15 or more per hour.
As long as people keep paying they will keep charging more.
Unfortunately too many Americans will keep paying those prices, because most are too lazy to cook their own food. These corporations know that most people in this country are lazy and stupid.

I went from admittedly going to fast food 2-3 times per week to now barely 2-3 times per month. The low prices were the only value and they've taken that away. I guess they like fewer sales. Interesting business model.

My wife and I took 2 of our grandkids (ages 9 & 11) to a FF restaurant for lunch and the bill was $48. A week later we took those same 2 grandkids to a local, family owned, sit down restaurant for dinner and the bill was $55! And we all ended up with a to-go box because the portions were too big for any of us to eat everything. Hmmm

Prices are not the only issue. Every time I go into a fast food joint the services is terrible. They get my order wrong. I literally have to use hand sanitizer to wipe down the tables because nobody bothers even clean up anymore. I’m not exaggerating it’s almost like a ritual, I have to be my own maintenance worker whenever I go into a lot of restaurants
You think with less cashiers because of the kiosk they have more people cleaning and ensuring cleanliness but nope!

True but I've noticed service is getting better, which is a reflection of the tighter job market. They're getting rid of incompetent workers and keeping the better ones. 2020-2022 were the absolute WORST years for service in many industries because they were hiring anyone with a pulse

Stopped at a Burgerville for the first time in years succumbing to a craving. Junior double cheese and a small drink, NO fries or extras ! $9.67 and had the balls to ask for a tip at the kiosk ! Guess it’ll be awhile before I have that craving again 😮😮

I used to, when I was much busier, eat a lot of fast food for convenience. Now that I'm older and retired I cook at home literally every meal. It's much cheaper as well as better and healthier.
And you gain cooking skills in the process! Huzzah! And if you’re like me who just experiments in the kitchen, you might even end up mastering your own little recipe. One of mine: Spicy BBQ Gochujang shredded chicken with sweet crispy pickles over white rice

My son runs a restaurant kitchen and we plan to cook some new recipes together... if I can ever get him down here.

Coming from a young guy btw, depending on how far he is from home, you can get him to come on over by letting him know you’ll be cooking a meal just for him made with lots of love! I always know how much effort my mother puts into cooking so I always try to eat as much of it as possible and if I’m away, I’ve made sure to catch some of the meal if it was made for me specifically because I’d feel bad if I didn’t. Plus, that food be gooood. Also, if your son’s restaurant is in NY lmk and I may stop by sometime. Cheers!

Everything not just fast food is getting expensive because corporations has figured out a way to collude with each other and use inflation as an excuse to gouge customers by 2 to 10 times what it really is with impunity.
The lack of competition(since a handful of companies own these fast food place) is killing consumers. The government needs to do its job and keep companies from monopolizing markets. Break them up! Oh and stop letting corporations and investment groups from buying up all the single-family housing!!

I'd did that and started cooking at home and still managed to get my order screwed up.
Keep paying the prices and you will get more of the same or worse. Funny how the news reports never actually mention that part. They just find an excuse and latch on to that instead of telling consumers they're part of the reason the prices stay high.
I had not eaten fast food since before the pandemic. I was out and saw 5 guys - i loved their fries and the over filled bag. Stopped in and ordered the big burger and large fry. $20 and no drink. they wanted a tip! I can get a 10 pound pork loin at Sam's for the same price and eat better for days. It will be 3 or 4 years before I am desperate enough to try fast food again
I wish price was the only complaint. Lately, I've been noticing they've been shorting me out on bacon. A full serving of bacon is 2 strips and they snap it in half to make it fit into the burger, but if I am getting 3 strips, there's a problem there... It is one thing to be doing that when the item is on sale, but it is happening when it's full price as well and that's not right! 😡

Also I worked in fast food myself I work at a burger joint won't say which one but at times when food cost was high and the profit margin weren't adding up we would cheat the customer if you got a double Burger qoth 4 straps of bacon we would only give you 2 strips of bacon some drinks would get water down and fires wouldn't get stuffed the would just make it look full and the drink where filled to the top with ice

Prices increase, portions decrease quality still sucks. They’ve lost the point of fast food. Even though I can afford it, I now don’t see the value or point they’re charging to much for something low quality it becomes difficult to justify it.
That's why I am avoiding dining out (including fast food) in New York because what I am getting is far far worse than the food I can get in other countries that I vacation often. You get cooked to order food by actual chef for $10 in Japan, Singapore, Thailand

McDonald's CEO recently said they found the customer's breaking point and will be scaling back. No matter what they might say, they are raising prices to raise profits. It's not the ecomony, the wars, or red vs blue. It's corporate greed. Don't eat this mess.

I remember growing up going to Mc Donalds maybe two or three times a year because my father for the most part was the only income and he was getting paid a little over minimum wage. It was a treat to get fast food. Nowadays people act like it's normal to eat out everyday. Nobody wants to cook at home anymore.

Because unless you are feeding a family of 4 or more, cooking at home isn't as cost effective as eating out USED to be. Cooking for one or 2 requires A LOT of things that apartment dwellers don't have (ie, large freezer). One also needs copious room for lots of storage containers because eating the same thing for about a week at a time becomes a reality quick. The alternative is to waste a bunch of material because you need to cut the recipes down by 50 - 75%. Having to buy an ENTIRE shaker of an relatively expensive spice just to only use 1 ts is infuriating and costly.
@@ch3nz3n I cook at home alone for myself all the time. It's WAY CHEAPER than eating out. You don't shop wisely. If I were eating out everyday I'd be broke. You're just lazy. I work and still prepare my own food and I actually DO save money. The only way preparing your own food would be more expensive is if you are buying the luxury groceries like an expensive cuts of steak, lobsters etc

If I want a burger from MsDs, it costs me less than $10.
If I want a burger at home, I have to buy the groceries to cook 4 or more of them at a cost of $50 (bread, cheese, whole onion, whole head of lettuce, whole bottle of ketchup, whole bottle of mustard, jar of pickles, etc). Can't buy a part of head of lettuce. Can't buy half an onion. Can't buy a half pound of good hamburger meat. Can't buy only 2 slices of cheese. Can't buy anything less than 8 hamburger buns at a time.
Additionally, I have to be willing to eat burgers again tmrw... and the day after that... and the day after that. Otherwise, the perishables that I didn't use on Day 1 will go to waste. Also, none of this takes into account the energy that I'll use to cook the food. Nor the money that I'll spend on transporting the groceries home. Nor the time (counted in hours) that I'll spend doing that cooking.
Further, in order to cut the waste costs, I have to be willing to research recipes and figure out what else I can use all of the groceries for... which means storage costs (plastic containers ain't free).
Or I could just go to McDs for a burger, pay my $10, eat my burger and go on with my life.
Sorry but cooking at home for 1-2 people simply isn't cheaper. And it's far removed from being as easy or convenient as fast food.

Fast food restaurants are ran by a franchisee in most cases. They are lucky to make $100-$150K in profit in a year. They are paying increases in wages, utilities like electric/gas/water/sewer, increases in taxes, increases in insurance, increases in the cost of goods/food, increases in the cost of machinery and/or to fix said machinery used in preparing food. EVERYTHING has got expensive.

At a fast food joint near me the franchisee comes to work in an expensive late model Mercedes, and his wife has a late model Lexus SUV. Then they cry poor mouth, and complain it is hard because now they have to pay their workers more. When they operate, they are very stingy. They only give you two packages of catchup with a burger and fries, and barely give out condiment sauces or salt and pepper. They were also ordered to throw away expired food product in the dumpster by the county health department inspector. After the inspector was gone, the franchisee then ordered his employees to go dumpster diving and remove the expired product. Then the franchisee ordered his employees to serve the expired food product to customers. Disgusting.

In my country, it’s not just price hikes & reduced portions. People just ate less junk food. Last month a MacD outlet in city centre shuttered after 30 years.
Such different times from the good old days of the Supersize Me movie in 2004 when food was cheap and in supersize portions, now it’s Tinysize Me and Bankrupt Me.
Fast food has never been cheap for me. My lunch is 1/3 cup of white rice (10 cents) and a slice of tortilla lime pollock fish (50 cents).

A few months ago I went to McDonald’s & ordered a cheeseburger w/ Bacon, a small fry & a drink! 🍔🍟🥤All these items at one point were on the dollar menu & would all cost you no more than $4 to $5 tops! I tell you no lie, the McDonald’s employee said “That’ll be $11.40” or something like that, I just immediately pulled off with no explanation & went to get REAL food for the same price & got more food at that! McDonald’s betrayed its core customers when we needed them most! McDonald’s has market cap of $211 Billion at the time of this post! They also have an annual revenue of over $23 billion a year. They make enough money & have enough money! No need to be greedy because you have to pay your workers a livable wage who make you the money day & night! Smh

I'm done with it. The price gouging of these greedy corporations is insane. As opposed to what is said in the video it is not mostly supply chain issues: their profits kept rising and now they are simply cashing in on their popularity, trying to pose as trendy, exclusive eateries for influencer types and top earners. I have totally weaned myself off. Even the discounts via apps are a total joke here in Germany for McDonalds, Burger King etc. My home-cooking intensified during the pandemic and me and my friends just kept at it. Just last week we had two burger nights at my place.
And if I want fast food that's worth its money, I'll get myself a Döner Kebap or Dürüm from a small, local vendor.

YUP! I used to have a dear friend whose family owned a bunch of convenient stores (Indian of course 😂). He told me their soda fountains were one of their biggest money makers, even at 99¢ for a Big Gulp. He said the syrup concentrate worked out to like maybe a penny per drink, plus a couple cents in the cup/straw/lids. HUGELY profitable, so think about when it's $3!!!
What do you expect to happen when the starting pay is close to $20 per hour. If a new employee gets that much, how much does the crew trainer get? If that crew trainer gets that much, how much does the shift manager get? If the shift manager is paid that amount, what does the general manager get? Once we set the general manager's salary, we have to pay the regional manager. Opening jobs were never intended to be a living wage. You are suppose to learn the job and then strive for promotions. But unskilled labor prices are causing these issues. The factors for profits are tied directly to food and labor costs. Building and utilities are pretty much fixed costs.

How has a Little Caesar's Hot & Ready pizza only gone up 20% during this inflation explosion? In fact most pizza places have barely raised their prices. Domino's used to have a 3 topping large pizza carryout only for $7.99. After 3+ years of inflation, IT'S STILL THE SAME PRICE!!!! The only difference is now it's only a 1 topping pizza.
I food prep, and when running errands I always have a small snack. I’d rather keep as much of my money to myself. It takes planning and adjusting but it not hard to do.

You already have to grocery shop so incorporate those items into your life and as soon as you are home on shopping day snack prep so you can grab and go when needed through the week.

A big part of it is increased minimum wage labor costs and how pretty much every sit down fast food store was forced to modernize the actual store to keep up with designs

Me too. I was at drive thru and ordered a breakfast "meal". An English muffin with an egg and cheese, hash brown patty, and coke. $14! I cancelled the order. Supermarket dozen eggs, 6 English muffins, real cheese, frozen potato hash browns, and 2L store soda were $11 and will last a week with eggs leftover for another meal. No more fast food for me

One of the reasons is the rising costs of utilities. If their electric and natural gas bills go up, they are going to pass along the increase to the consumer.
McDonald’s business model was that 16 year old kids at minimum wage would be the majority working there and that kept expenses down. Now we have career employees making 15-20 per hour the majority there.
