Delaying trains to save lives is all well and good, but could someone tell Northern Rail that the war is over and that they don't need to delay *every* service?

This reminds me of a documentary I saw years ago about "soft sabotage". Many railwaymen were recruited by the resistance; this was highly effective because the German war effort on the western front ran on the railway. For example: a goodsman just had to swap waybills on wagons (before marshalling) and submarine batteries ended up in South Italy while water canteens ended up in St. Nazaire.

One was captured by the Germans and was given Wehrmacht markings. It survived the entire war, making its way eastward. It was found in the scrapyard in East Germany in the 1950s and photographed.

It left the terminal in city only to get stopped at signal and the german soldiers on the footplate with the locomotive crew were ambushed. The train returned to the station but used the underground platforms. Like I said its been many years since I heard it so any information would be great.
