I'm 74 years old and this was one of my dad's favorite groups. He used to play their records all the time. The Ink Spots were famous for their lead singer's beautiful tenor and the bass's talking choruses. Thanks for this - it brought back some happy memories of my father!

Great song! The Ink Spots were a popular vocal group in the 1930's and 40's. Most of their songs followed the same format, with spoken vocals in the middle. Give 'The Gypsy' a listen. It was another hit for them and a great story about hopeless romance.

This song was one of the biggest selling singles of all-time. I think it's still in the top 10 or 20 biggest singles ever, on the Billboard list of singles where you actually had to buy the record. I remember Ink Spots record commercials on TV back in the 1980s.

A record in 1939 was recorded at 78 RPM on "shellac," that was much more brittle and heavier than the newer vinyl records (recorded at 33 1/3 RPM). Generally, there were only two songs on the record (Sides a & b), A shellac record album back then, looked like a book or photo album, with five sleeves, each with one record in it. Records started being pressed more frequently on vinyl partly due to less available shellac for record production during World War II. Shellac records eventually stopped being made around 1960. Music from a different world. "ZOOT!"

This song is from 1939. The Ink Spots and the great Bill Kenney. One of the very important groups from which doo-wop was eventually formed. Listen to them doing "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire" and "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall".

I have spent hundreds of hours in my life enjoying the Ink Spots and I am glad to see you giving permission, if you will, or at least the go-ahead, for the younger generations to sample and maybe even make the great music of the Inks and other vintage artists a part of their lives. Not only are your programs fun but they are a service as well.

The song was also played in Malcolm X with Denzel Washington when as Malcolm Little he was at the beach with his White girlfriend. Fred G. Sanford's song on Sanford and Son too. He used to always sing this song. It was hilarious. Back then you HAD to be able to sing or no record deal. No studio to help you out if you can't sing.

Boy oh boy, you guys sure did go back far tonight with this one! Thank you so much. I can still see and hear my dad telling me about The Ink Spots with his voice getting really gruff as he says, "Honey chile" with a great big grin on his face. It almost seems like every song they did started out with that same guitar riff. If you want to have some real fun, you should listen to them doing You Always Hurt The One You Love and then listen to the Spike Jones cover of it. It's a blast!
Nice to see your family while you were enjoying the game and the pie.

I discovered The Ink Spots when I was a little kid, found this record and played it and the other side to death! Today I have a big collection of their records. If anyone watched "Sanford & Son" They know this was Fred's favorite song, he sang the first part of it in many episodes. Every record they made sounds almost like the last one, and the cherry on the top is when the bass singer pops in and recites the first verse. The flip-side was "Whispering Grass" Great song, and the words sound like they are singing it after inhaling a fat one while laying on the lawn.

The Ink Spots were an American pop vocal group from the 30's-40's. "If I Didn't Care" was one of their biggest hit in 1939. They were known for using the new format called "Top & Bottom" where the lead tenor sang one chorus followed by the bass singer reciting the lyrics rather than singing them. After that the lead tenor sang the rest of the song until the end. Some of their early songs were "Address Unknown", "My Prayer", "Bless You", "Memories Of You", "I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You" etc.
