In 1979 I was privileged to be a guest in Norway as a member of a winter warfare training exchange program with the Norwegian Home Guard. They are tough soldiers. While there I had the opportunity to watch the changing of the guard. It would be a mistake for anyone to think them "toy soldiers". They are in fact highly trained and motivated in their service in the Kings Guard. Unlike American ceremonial guards, they carry fully loaded battle rifles and they are prepared to use them in the protection of their king.
In 2011, when a bomb went off in the governmental district in downtown Oslo, HMKG on watch by the Royal Castle set up several MG positions in around the castle order to protect the King and the royal familly. So as you say, they are far from toy soldiers.
@@hwatson069 So when speaking of WWII, what army? We didn't have much of a defensive capability, yet kept the Germans from capturing the king and the royal family. Of course King Harald fled, he has 3 years old at the time. Did you expect him to stay and fight? how is this even relevant to my comment anyway?
I always giggle when I see these armies, who never fought a war putting on such a great show! Norwegians particularly... They can't wait to come here with the UN to tell us in the USA how to live our lives.
The reason they use the HK416 when standing guard is that they intend to use them if necessary and Classic rifles just won't do. The HMKG has M1's but they are just for show.
The HMKG is one of the only two sharp batalions among the mandatory service batalions, they are actually there to defend the king and his house should something happen. Which they did on the 22th july some years ago.
The royalguard in Norway is trained for close urban combat and it is naive to think that they are just cermonial. On 22 july terrorist attack in Norway, it was not clear what was gonna happen next, and the royal guard was put into full combat alert, digging machine gun positions and bringing out the more heavy artellary around the royal palace.

The Nazis hid a lot of things, including ships, in such places. Actually my comment was predicated on the assumption Norway had continued its former policy of neutrality. I guess Quisling changed all that & Norway is part of NATO now.

Hot Communist A-10 Warthog however it is a bolt action rifle and carries ten rounds, so it is incredibly difficult to win a fire fight with it and so few guardsmen
Well, Sweden did help. The Nazis that is. Most of the occupying forces arrived in Norway on Swedish rail material. Although to be fair, they were given the choice of letting the Nazis pass through peacefully or be invaded themselves. It should also be added that the Swedish military command was more than just a little friendly to the Germans...
I have what I think would be an excellent way to end this piracy. Are familiar w/ the concept of "letters of marques?" The old custom of gov'ts issuing to private ship owners what are basically licenses to make war on behalf of that gov't. They were entitled to attack the kings enemies & keep whatever the took from that enemy. I doubt the pirates have much of value, but a bounty could be put on them & any ship attacked by these pirates could collect a bounty for whoever they take out.
In WWII Norway held its ground for about 2 months against a superior German force. We and the Brits threw the Germans out of Narvik in Northern Norway and would stop the German advance, wasn't it that the Germans invaded France, so the Brits had to withdraw with their ships and gear.
His Majesty the Kings Royal Ruard has more training then most other military branches. Actually, I've been to Europe & Britain. I said European, meaning to exclude the British. Actually, I did not feel particularly welcome in London. I felt much more at easy in France & Germany!
& then you had to the treason of Quisling undermining your efforts as well. I was only asking b/c I was assuming Norway maintained its former policy of strict neutrality. I guess that is over. If is Norway is neutral it would not see combat as a matter of course. For instance, when the was the last time a Swiss Army unit saw combat?

Oh, I misunderstood then. Yes, the change between the ones who are already guarding and the ones who come to relieve them from duty, in lack of better wording, is happening where each of the guards stand. They walk in one row to each guard, and the guards who are relieved of duty has to follow along the row until all the guards have been replaced, then they go back to the barrack and get ready for the 2nd part of the main-rotation of guards. I hope this helped, but I found it a little hard to pick the right words, so I understand if there's something you didn't understand.
