  • How do you know your dog needs BOAS surgery?
A BOAS assessment is one of the tools to identify if your dog has clinically relevant disease (other tools include a CT scan etc..), it also has other uses which we talk about in this video!
I learned how you conduct a BOAS assessment on flat-faced/ brachycephalic breed dogs (eg. pugs, french bulldogs, english bulldogs) from Lydia, an awesome specialist nurse and BOAS assessor. BOAS assessments are done to determine whether your dog requires surgery, medical treatment or further monitoring, as well as research with aims to improve breed health long-term.
    What is BOAS?
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) refers to a group of conditions in brachycephalic (short skull shape and hence flat faced) dogs. Due to extreme breeding conformation, they have anatomical defects (increased amounts of soft tissue in their short skull) and a myriad of health issues that most people are not aware about 😞. With this video, we hope to bring awareness and sign-post some resources on BOAS and educate others on what goes on in a BOAS assessment.

I hope to be a breeder of Boston Terriers in the future. It's unfortunate that this test is extremely uncommon or not even heard of at all in the USA. I want to change that and breed healthy dogs that can breathe to improve the breed. I may have to do the test myself because vets here might not know how so this helps.

About time people stop breeding dogs that often have a life of suffering, just because they look cute and 'expressive'.. shame on you for buying puppies too and perpetuating the problem.

Or forced neutering of animals with BOAS issues. No matter if it is a competition dog or not.
Competitions sould fail dogs with BOAS issues per default
