    Leaders in research at the University of Cambridge, Dr Sargan, Dr Liu and Dr Ladlow provide viewers with an insight as to what Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is, how it affects brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed dogs e.g. Pugs/Bulldogs/French Bulldogs) and the signs and symptoms owners/potential owners should be aware of.
    A full resource is available for FREE on the Kennel Club Academy, which also provides those in the veterinary profession with the tools to diagnose the condition before it progresses into its severe stages.

    I have an even simpler solution: Demand that the breed standards be revised to stop requiring engineered deformities like stenotic nares, screw tails, and nose ropes, and make dogs with functional muzzles preferred over the flat faces.

    If there was less irresponsible breeding that would be helpful. Responsible breeders health test for a reason. BOA testing is common in the UK but hasn't made it to the U.S. yet, sadly. It needs to become more common to test in the U.S.

    We had this surgery done on the 28 th of March . The nostril surgery was fine , but not the soft pallet procedure. It’s been nothing but a mess up . And the vet seem to get our dog healthy right know . Had to take him back to vet numerous times . And not doing good right know . He’s at vet know until he can come home comfortably and healthy. Some how his surgery was not done right , he vomited a pile of nothing but sutures. . Can’t eat , has lost weight. And another vet said he might not make it . We spent a lot of money on this dog to help live a decent life . And didn’t know we purchased a sick puppy in the first place . He was healthy as a puppy until 5 months old complications started happening.

      The more inbred (AKC approved for some reason) Apple head chihuahuas can be brachycephalic. The deer head chihuahuas are actually more natural and should be the promoted look of chihuahuas. Also, I may be overweight. A lot of people I breed too much to get chi too small and people often don’t understand they don’t eat more than 1/8 cup meals and shouldn’t weigh more than 6-7 pounds lean.

    • @JDMimeTHEFIRST
      @JDMimeTHEFIRST 3 роки тому +4

      I own a rescue deer head chihuahua and he’s so quiet I forget he’s there. No breathing issues, no snoring. He is 6 lbs and slightly taller than most Apple head chihuahuas I’ve seen. The Apple head are also more prone to hydrocephalus. But deer head and even the Apple head chihuahuas live up to 20 years. That is healthy compared to the 6 year average of pugs, bulldogs, and French bulldogs. I don’t find snoring cute (in people or in dogs). Obviously, with age, most things snore. But puppies and young adults should not be snoring unless there is something wrong (overweight or brachycephalic)

    • @kathleenrayner1234
      @kathleenrayner1234 2 роки тому +1

      I have had many chihuahuas and none have had breathing difficulties. Then again none were baby doll chihuahuas which are deliberately bred for short noses. Not a good thing. 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕

    • @kimberwicke7697
      @kimberwicke7697 Рік тому

      @@JDMimeTHEFIRST There are no "deerheads" or "pearheads" or whatever such nonsense backyard breeders have come up with and spread around on social media/badly sourced articles. There is only ONE type of head, and every breed standard/desc (contrary to the TON of misinformation that appears first on google along with pages of dogs from more backyard bred situations like merle/exotic bullies/doodles) states that is is apple-LIKE. Their muzzles aren't supposed to be very long. Seeing that can tip you off right away that the dog comes from someone that didn't know what they were doing who outcrossed to dachshunds or italian greyhounds or whatever hypertype they had on hand. They're allowed slight variations but overall "There should be no suggestion of an expression that resembles a Pug or a Toy Manchester Terrier." The longer muzzles are weak in bone substance + prone to tooth disease/decay and worse, as we've seen many, many times - the lower jaw fails to form and you get the dogs with the tongue sticking out (maybe even missing a front leg or two). A chihuahua head needs balance; they're supposed to be hardy small dogs. As the vid above shows, it's not always about muzzle length. Chihuahuas are unfortunately among the top most backyard bred breeds, being #2 in most euthanized. Amateur breeders who don't bother to health test or breed away from extreme types/disease have gotten real good at using show lingo to fool people into believing that there's different kinds to get away with whatever low quality mutts they're producing that they dump on the general public, whether it be through overcharging ignorant ppl or whatever they dump on/sell to rescues (through auctions).

    I have a solution. I think pugs are cute, many think smushed-face dogs are cute. So instead of stopping the breathing all together, why not just breed the dogs like Cedric, Freddie, & Geno?
    So the bread can still exist & continue, but better breathing genes are promoted & passed down?

      Inbreeding those few dogs that aren’t quite as unhealthy as the whole breed isn’t going to help much. That could cause other issues. Those people who think the “please kill me look” is cute could just get cats to torture I’d they must own a pet that suffers its whole life. Or they could just get a hobby that doesn’t include adding to the torture of animals

    He snores sometimes snorts but little panting .Runs well too.
    Would of had another Staffie but a bit boisterous for me now so went for Frenchie as pugs n frugs n any poor thing made smaller with smaller lungs seems cruel to me - like they poor cup dogs .
