Addition: Geisha means "artist," and many girls wanted to become these talented, beautiful creatures and worked many years to become celebrated and famous.

Another interesting but sad fact is that Grandma’s face has those yellow spots because the white makeup they used at the time was made with lead (lead actually creates a brilliant white base which is why it is in so much old paint). When the Geisha would bathe in the natural hot springs throughout Japan the mineral water reacted with the lead and discolored their skin.

The book was phenomenal. Very loosely based on a specific geisha, who actually wrote her own book as well. She was famous and has entertained people such as Prince Charles, etc. She is retired and married to her patron and living in NY. This book and film got me fascinated in the geisha world, and it's many levels. And the common misconception that they were prostitutes. Only low-class were. There is a plethora of literature out there, written by both the privileged geishas and the ones who were sold to sexual slavery in the low-class areas and houses. Fascinating world and the kimonos alone are worth a fortune. So glad you chose this, as not many have, and this deserved all the accolades it received. The actors actually went to Geisha school and learned arts that takes years to learn.

Iwasaki Mineko, yes. She became the most famous geiko in "the world of the flower and the willow". That is how japanese call the world of geishas and taikomochis.
Iwasaki's older sister had become a geiko too, and she was the one who taught her. They hated each other.
Mineko had some issues with Arthur Golden because he made it too obvious that she was the one who told him her story.
Many geishas complained that Iwasaki "had revealed their secrets" (their techniques at work regarding to seducing and stuff).
Have you read from Liza Dalby? She became a geiko herself for a time in order to study their world to write about them.

I'm sure someone else has said this (I couldn't find it with a quick scroll down though), so I'll share: The reason there were no subtitles in the beginning was so that you, like the girls, would be caught up in the chaotic confusion of the scene. They really made sure to create a sense of place in that scene, if you noticed, the ocean, the textures. You got all the information you needed (they are the parents, the mother is very sick, the father is selling the girls). It's such a gorgeous piece of cinematography because it communicates all this while still leaving you in the same emotional space as the main character.

For me, that was obvious because even in the french version, that wasn't translate.
But we can see that the father is sad to let them go.

The geishas painted their neck because it was considered as a sensual zone of the body.
The grandma's skin is like that because in her days, the white powder used for painting the face contained plumb.
According to the book, Satsu is 15.

Sooo happy you reacted to this!! such a beautifully made film. I searched reactions to it on a whim, fully expecting to get zero results and I got so excited when I saw you watched this, especially when I saw that theres 2 parts!
I hope you enjoyed it, its one of my favorites. The "training" montage at 25:33 is so captivating. I love how enriched in culture and history this movie is without being boring at all. Its funny, I remember watching this when I was about 8 years old (not sure what my mom was thinking letting me watch it lol) and naturally, a lot of the innuendos were lost on me, like the one around 15:57 I kept asking my mom what the lady grabbed with her hand and my mom just ignored me hahaha it wasnt until I was older that I understood more and I was able to appreciate how complex the characters are too.

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    &
The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin are other stunning visual masterpieces
    If I can be so bold, however;
From watching your channels I can almost guarantee you are a “Miyazaki” girl- I say girl because the films make you feel child like - they’re visually beautiful
My daughter was and still is a massive fan of his works.
Miyazaki is a world famous director of watercolor animation that’s hard to even describe it’s so beautiful
I’d recommend “Howls Moving Castle” : “Princess Mononoke” & “ Spirited Away”
I can tell from your appreciation of things, you’ll be blown away by the art that is a Miyazaki film

One of my most favourite book to movie adaptations.
The book as always, goes into depth about all the nuances of the world that Chiyo/Sayuri lives in.
Geisha are artisans, practicing for many years (as you saw the little girls in Geisha school) in the art of dance, music and conversation. Chiyo/Sayuri has a natural knack with words which worked for her. The glimpses of the wrist, the painting of the neck etc, all come from the notion of those places being considered erotic, showing a little but not too much so to speak. Her sister was unfortunately taken to the “pleasure district” where she would have become a s*x worker.
You are on the right track in regards to Dr Crab and trying to get the highest bid.
All the women in the movie are multi faceted (you get more to each story in the book) and even though I too thought of Hatsumomo as a dragon she too was trapped in a world she didn’t want to be in and truly just wanted to be loved…..
In regards to the chairman, in the moment little Chiyo was drawn in by the one person who showed her kindness and due to that changed the trajectory of her path in life (with the help of Mameha of course, who’s goal is to support her to get out and be self sufficient and not owe the Okiya).
I look forward to watching Part 2 and think I may reread the book in anticipation 😊

The father does sell them to the Okiya through Mr. Tanaka in the beginning of the movie. The mother was indeed dead and the father (at least in the book) was old and he knew he could not take care off his daughter for long. Selling children to, for example, the pleasure district was not uncommon in Japan before WWII for poor families. Boys could be sold to acting companies for example, girls to okiyas or brothels.

“Tanaka-san” roughly means Mr. Tanaka. “San” is a Japanese honorific used to refer to basically any any adult of “general” status (friends, strangers, acquaintances). You’ll also hear Chiyo called “Chiyo-chan” where “chan” refers to a a child or close female friend. Japan has several honorifics and generally you will always use one when addressing someone.
Other ones you may hear are Sama: referring to a person of a higher status, guest or customer. Senpai: a senior colleague or classmate. And Sensei: A teacher or expert (roughly equivalent to a Doctor or Professor title).
Great reaction! Hope you had fun. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m a huge fan of Japanese culture (even if there are problematic aspects of this film).

There are a lot of asian movies with very strong storylines and amazing cinematography that will touch your heart.. Some of these that I could mention:
    1. In The Mood for Love
    2. Parasite
    3. Curse of the Golden Flower
These are very deep movies from big directors that touch upon various topics.. mindblowing but severely underrated.

Good video, but I have to admit I never liked the movie. The novel it was based on was really an American's interpretation of Japanese culture. Focusing too much on the prostitution aspect, when Geisha is far more complex than that. Mineko Iwasaki, one the actual Geisha the author interviewed, had many complaints about his accuracy, especially the mizuage ritual (and acknowledging her by name in the book in spite of her wishes to remain unanimous), wrote a more accurate autobiography called 'Geisha: A life.'

Most people that are not familiar with the Japanese culture have the wrong concept of what a geisha really is, they think it's what, during the time of war, many Japanese girls pretended or portrayed themselves as but they were prostitutes not really Geishas.
Geisha as well as many other Japanese traditions is a whole art, that's what used to make the Japanese culture so different from any other, each person would master a craft therefore helping their community and their country. They are such hard workers, incredible culture really. Nowadays it's not the same anymore but they are still quite something.
Lobe this movie, great reaction btw.

Wonderfull Movie! I was very touched by it when I watched it many years ago.
In terms of accuracy there is actually some really troublesome backround story. The film is based on a book which was written inspired by the life story if a geisha. Unfortunately they misinterpreted a lot, and did not respect her only condition: Not to be named.
10 years later she actually wrote her own book called life of a geisha.
