- Astrud Gilberto, the voice of 'The Girl From Ipanema' Funeral And Obituary | She Knew it
Astrud Gilberto, who passed away at the age of 83, was the female bossa nova singer who was best known for her rendition of the song "The Girl from Ipanema." This song sold more than a million copies when it was released as a single in 1964, and it was the song that introduced the laid-back, sophisticated Brazilian musical style to a vast new audience across the United States and the rest of the world. Astrud Gilberto was the best known female bossa nova singer.
Gilberto did not write the song, and she had not been regarded as a significant personality in the bossa nova movement prior to the time of its release because she had never sang professionally before. However, the release of that one hit record shifted everything. She became the voice and face of what would become a new trend in pop music all across the world, and she had an incredibly cool voice. The track was taken from the album Getz/Gilberto, which was a cooperation set including the American saxophonist Stan Getz, who had grown attracted by bossa nova, and the Brazilian guitarist Joo Gilberto, to whom Astrud was then married. Getz and Gilberto were married at the time the record was released. Even though she only contributed two songs to the album (the other one was called "Corcovado"), the success of "The Girl from Ipanema" ensured that she would achieve the same level of fame as the record's two official stars. The song was also instrumental in the transformation of her husband's career, although the couple was never able to share in the rewards of the song's popularity because they divorced later that same year. Astrud went on to establish her own successful career while maintaining her partnership with Getz.

I 'came of age' in the 1960s and just adored Astrud's singing. What a great loss. Rest in peace, Queen of Bossa Nova..❤
For those who didn't know who she was, play them 'The Girl From Ipanema' so they can get a feel of a melody and performance by Astrud they will cherish and never forget.
A very talented lady, with a sultry voice that really touched my heart!!!

Thank you so much, She and my daughter had so much in common and we will miss her dearly. God Bless. Linda and Shara
So lucky of you being close to her!
I'm so sorry for your loss, Linda. Astrud seemed like such a down to earth, sincere, and sweet woman. I remember when I was 5 years old (1964) and I heard "The Girl From Ipanema" on the radio, I immediately loved the song and the voice behind it, and couldn't wait to hear it again! I wish I could have known her somehow. God Bless Astrud Gilberto, and may she rest in peace❤
@Linda B oh, dear... I bet Astrud loved your daughter's company. And yours too, of course. Thank you for replying my message. I feel honored. I'm just a 22 year old girl who loves good music and English. I'm Brazilian and bossa nova definitely has a special place in my heart. Best wishes to you all. ❤️
I Loved Astrud...I loved her

Obrigado Astrud. Eu Te Amo.
Rest in peace legend 💔 (from india)
Love you eternally astrud one love rest in peace. 🕊
Rest in peace Bossa Nova Queen ❤ from Philippines 😢
The irony of the English version of the girl from Ipanema is that it stripped away the swing in Bossanova. There’s a massive difference between the Portuguese lyrics and the English lyrics. Anyway, love Astrud, but also love the irony when people say her version of that song brought bossa nova to the masses
Someone at the record company realised the gold mine they had opted to just have the version with her alone which had a huge effect. Which bossa nova song would you say had a bigger impact than this?
@@myhumbleopinion1036 I didn’t say she didn’t have a big impact, I just said the English version is less “bossa nova” than the original Brazilian.
@@mikedowd66 Ok I understand.
I'm so glad I saw her at Elario's in concert in La Jolla in the mid 90s

ASTRUD GILBERTO
Descanse en paz
🥺🌷💐🕯🎶🇧🇷💕
I remember Astrud when l am hearing "The Gentle Rain" from Luiz Bonfa & Matt Dubey. RIP lady Astrud Evangelina Weinert.
Last time I remembered she yelled my name dennis! That’s all I heard for two months later I found out she passed away on june
As a musician her timing was awesome and the tone of her voice was superb.
It's the "GIRL FROM IPANA" and was originally written about a beautiful girl with perfect white teeth who used this kuh-RAZY good toothpaste. When the guys heard she used Ipana, they ALL suddenly wanted to kiss her because they loved the taste of her lips. TRU story
Very informative video, although I found the narrator mispronouncing Joao Gilberto's name every time. I had a chance to see Astrud Gilberto perform in person on the Ed Sullivan Show in the late 60s or early 70s *senior moment*.
Astrud Gilberto, Brazilian Jazz Sweetheart, Bossa Nova Jazz🏆✨🌟⭐💫🌠🌐🍿🚭🖖♀️🥰🗽🎼🌊🌌🌎🌹🌞🤟🌅☕🧈🫶🖼️Girl from Impanema, Corcovado
Somewhere near minute 1:11 you state "Getz and Gilberto were married at the time". Wrong.
I think there was also a picture of someone who wasn't Astrud Gilberto in between the others. Very strange indeed.
I didn't take it to mean that they were married to each other. They had an affair however.
No the robot voice is trying to mention her husband Joao Gilberto.
I caught that also. I think it was simply misstated.
pretty! lovely voice ❤❤❤❤❤
🙏
What I found kinda strange is that most Brazilian people I met showed a somewhat disdain for Astrud. Maybe it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. I don't really know. But she was certainly the right person in the right place at the right time to make Bossa Nova reach its worldwide audience. Not bad for a 23 years woman who was in ove with popular Brazilian music. To me, she'll remain as the voice who will be eternally associated with Bossa Nova. Often copied, never equaled.
R. I. P. Astrud Angelina, angel of my ears...
I hear you, I am Brazilian who came to USA in 1961 at age of 12, I am now 74. I don't think Brazilians had "disdain" over Astrud, I would categorize it more as a "disconnect" from Brazil resulting by her move to live in USA. I had no choice about coming to USA as I was only 12, my family came to Chicago as a total relocation. I still have many friends in Brazil and been traveling there since my early 20's on a regular basis, I noticed many people calling me " o Americano" , " the American" when down there, but, it never bothered me. So, maybe this is what happened to Astrud, on a very larger scale, she was famous, I am not , regards to you from Chicago.
😢😢😢
Pery Rebeiro sung it 1st in in 1962 before Joan or Astrud Gilberto in 1963.
The narration is AI, eh?
Why can't this man pronounce names and words correctly???
"I" panema(with a long "I"? really? obviously not from Brazil ( : P
Your AI voice's pronunciation isn't very good.
"IPANEMA" is correct
I couldn't watch more than a minute of this. The narrator keeps mispronouncing people's names and getting facts wrong. You're better off reading the Wikipedia page.
Annoyingly so many mistakes....
Another bait and click article!
Astrud and Jew were married ?
Yes, bizarre statement at 6.20.
The Girl from Impenema , not Ipanema. Get the spelling right. You lose all credibility.
The commonly accepted spelling in English speaking countries is IPANEMA.
@@suncat9 yeah, but I was referring to the way I heard him PRONOUNCE the title, NOT spell it! So ease up, dude, I'm old and bitter, (or can't you tell?) and I get things wrong, from time to time, and if I stumble and fall, I have to worry about breaking bones, or worse! So please, tough guy, stop being so mean to someone for making a mistake, because your mama..
..
See, that should tell you a lot right there, about being almost 70! I don't understand why I even got into this back and forth with typed words, and who fucking cares anyway? Apparently, waaay too many do. I've wasted enough time typing this..Feeling pain.... in...che
