For automated immersion inspections, we adjust both voltage (up to 500V) and pulse width in order to maximize the energy output form the probe, because there are often external sources of EMI / RFI noise. In this situation, riding the increased gain also amplifies the noise, so we lose sensitivity to small flaws. Absolutely concur that one must pay attention to what the probe can withstand. A piezo crystal can take a lot more than a PVDF film transducer.
