Usually underexpose the ambient light by 1 to 2 stops and then add the flash to suit my taste. Cannot stand blown out skies :)

As many others have said before, it depends on what is the mood and style I'm intending to create, I'd opt for overpowering the Sun or balancing flash light with ambient.
    Gorgeous photos. Congrats!
I'm really impressed with how well the feathering technique works by placing the umbrella at such large angles and distances. It is a powerful flash light indeed.

I think a lot depends on the subject and scene. If there's a lot of harsh lighting from the sun, my main goal in the past has always been to try and soften the shadows...but that's only because competing with the sun was always a losing game. It seems that's not the case anymore!!! Super excited about this product! It looks amazing!

Just a reminder. Don't forget to award / announce the winner of the SL100D contest from your "How to film in low light | Godox Film Lighting 101 EP14" contest! And the AD1200 Pro looks like a truly powerful "beast" of a lighting unit (in the best possible way!). Having enough power to overpower the sun gives me the most versatility, although I do prefer to combine that power with a large softbox, at least personally.

I love these videos because they show what real professional photography is like. I also love Godox lights. Believe or not, I get beautifully saturated skies and detail in fabrics with using a AD200. I recently did a shoot in the forest with an AD100 and got great results. It's certainly nice to have all that power, but you don't always need it.

It all depends on the look/theme we are looking to create. For more crisp, saturated and dramatic feel, overpowering the sun technique works the best. And for more subtle and soft themes the softer fill works well.

  • @ecoarena

I prefer to keep my lights and looks as 'natural' as possible. Thus, why not take advantage of the ultimate key light that nature provided? I will use a reflector as a fill to take advantage of the sun while using a softbox and my Godox V1 as a keylight. Using this technique, I am able to shoot everything from macrophotography to portraiture. Godox has taken my understanding of photography to another level.

Why would you shoot portraits in full sun mid day? The harsh light, is harsh light, no matter you do. If it is an sport event or some other type of photography there is no need for flash or shooting in direct sun.

It depends.....though mostly prefer over powering the sun, but in some instance, it depends on the look you are going for.......I try to avoid shooting under harsh sun light, reason being that the sun smears or ruins the makeup and keeping your client under the sun for long isn't good/healthy.

I was doing a shoot in a forest just a week ago... I wish I had been able to watch this video first! I was using an AD400 Pro and a parabolic umbrella, and even at 1/128 power I sometimes couldn't shoot at the very large apertures I would have preferred to keep the background trees soft. (I finally had to resort to Adobe's new Neural Blur filter.) If I had seen the video, it would have occurred to me to feather the light to soften and reduce the flash power. D'oh, next time I'll know better!
PS -- I'm not usually a fan of the artificial-looking "beat the sun" effect, but its graphic quality worked well here, even though I preferred the softer-light shot. And I would like to mention that I find Sarah's calm voice and professional delivery very pleasant.
