I'm a Texan so I love me some king of the hill. I can totally relate to the show. Peggy reminds me of my ex- wife. Hank reminds me of my friends father. Boddy reminds me of a childhood friend.
I’m from a small town in Ontario Canada n king of the hill runs very true for here as well. It’s not uncommon to see a tractor in the drive threw around here. I’ve always wanted to move to Texas. Maybe KOTH is partly why lol

For a sitcom, especially an animated one, the continuity is pretty tight. This is a word that was not even in the vocabulary of sitcom writers for the first 50-60 years of the medium.

Continuity is a Pet peeve of mine, it comes from working in Television. I look for Breaks in Continuity, way more than I would like to. Sometimes ruins the whole episode for me

Ngl I've watched a lot of slice of life anime when I was younger but none of the non movie based ones imo can compete with GREATNESS that is KOTH. No overly clique tropes, no wacky anime moments that get dull quickly it's just about a hard working man who sells propane and propane accessories. There's nothing more human than that.
Literally the series finale is the culmination of one of the main arcs (Hank and Bobby finding something they can truly enjoy together) and even ties up a couple others (Kahn easing up on Connie, Nancy and Dale's marriage being normal again)
When I was young I loved The Simpsons, but hated KOTH. I couldn't sleep one night and watched KOTH on Adult Swim and I liked it. The more I watched the more I loved it. Now I like it so much most nights I fall asleep to it in the background. I think I was expecting a Simpsons type show when I was young, and just didn't appreciate the humor.

Seeing hank, Bill, boomhoure and Dale struggle with khan's ethnicity and assuming they were Japanese ot Chinese thinking they eat dogs and assuming they ate ladybird a old ass dog? Shooting contests and cotton as a father bullying his son hank in flashbacks. They also spoke slower with less enthusiasm. A swore I saw a confederate flag in an episode or two. Either way by season two I was more into the show.

The brilliance of Mike Judge is the conservatives learning from the liberals and liberals learning from the conservatives. The liberals need to be heard because new ideas can be corrective when the old rules become oppressive to a changing society and the conservatives need to be heard because we need to remember the lessons learned often by blood and copper to not undergo the same suffering just to find what was already found.
Haha same here I couldnt appreciate this show as a kid, as an adult I can relate so much and love it. There is a bit of a tenderness to it too and now its one of my favorite shows to binge watch to keep me from being homesick overseas. It relaxes me in a strange way.
I didn't start watching it until I was 9. Little me didn't appreciate it either. It's now my favorite adult cartoon. Either Koth or Beavis and Butthead.
I might be a Californian born and raised (BWAAAAAH!) and we might be Oriental, but my family feels pretty American and I can relate to King of the Hill. I will admit that I was a little bit like Bobby when I was 8 until about 14. My dad was so much like Hank Hill that he even dressed like him and voted for Bush... Also, I grew up listening to Willie Nelson as my dad was a fan, following him from country, to country western to adult contemporary. I really do appreciate this show for all the reasons mentioned in this video but especially because it wasn't partisan.
If I'm not mistaken, the cinematography of King of the Hill requires the shot to be physically feasible with a hypothetical camera, except for dream and psychedelic sequences of course. The characters get into wild but never fantastical scenarios.
As someone that grew up in the deep south i can tell ya we love king of the hill. Hank isnt viewed as satire he is viewed as being an exaggeration of what we all feel and is extremely relatable and lovable. Cotton is by far the best damn character though
King of the hill is one of those shows that you couldn’t get into as a child, but then growing up to love it with its grounded humour as an adult, Wish it came back but it probably ended on a good note
I am a conservative that grew up in a very Hill-like culture. I laughed at and with the Hill's. I appreciate the show and hope it showed people in other cultures that we all have a lot in common.
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. Around the time the show closed out I was probably 14-15. It was something cute and fun to watch but nothing exceptional. I just recently went through the whole show 10 years later. And there were so many moments that truly captured Southern mentality. Seriously so well written as a show. I’d love a sequel taking place in now times. Maybe following Bobby as the man of the house trying to raise GH.
You don't HAVE to have been from a rural, small town kinda place to appreciate King of the Hill, but I think it helps. Hank and the guys remind me of SO MANY middle-aged adults I knew when I was a kid in rural Michigan. No interests beyond their lawns and what route they take to work. Anything beyond the world of like 1972 just seems stupid and not worth learning to them. I made sushi to bring to Christmas once a couple years ago for appetizers, and half my uncles were like five-year-olds afraid to try it. Because it's like "This is a meat other than steak and vegetables other than potatoes! I'm not eating this!" It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls. To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"
Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao
I'm from Michigan as well and grew up in the 90s. This show was a satire of my dad and all his friends to a T. I think it does speak a bit more to rural americans who know these characters in real life.

We got little roadside produce stands like that everywhere, there's an Amish community nearby, their farm reminds me of my aunt and uncle's house and a few other friends. And now Shoresy is set in a city of about 100k, just like where I live NOW.

Honestly I was one of those kids that really liked king of the hill I always got excited to see it on tv and I would always try to the find the channel that would be airing on, idk why I just really liked it and I still do I love it in fact. I always rewatch it basically daily now ,King of the hill will be a big part of memories for a life time
My ex-boyfriend/closest friend died last year and the Buckley’s angel episode helped me while grieving. He was only 31 and it’s so lonely going through it because most young people can’t relate. Funny to relate to a cartoon- but it touched my heart. I cry nearly every time I hear “Life in a Northern Town” now. It’s a beautiful episode.
21:20 That's also something live-action shows used to do back in the 80s and 90s. Usually after one of those insipid "Very Special" episodes, they'd bring out the cast to be like "We had some laughs tonight, but if you or someone you love is addicted to crack, call this number please." And then you'd call the number and it was just some stupid rehab shit instead of a guy who can score you more crack like you hoped. It was misleading.
As someone who grew up in a small town in the midwest, this show reminds me of so many people and situations I knew/know in real life. Probably one of the best and most accurate (and fair minded) portraits of middle america in pop culture. Hank may be a stick in the mud, but he's ultimately a good guy and often, in his own way, has a point,
one thing about KOTH that I dont think is appreciated enough is how the design of the characters is made in a way that doesn't look cartoonish. It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
Whenever Peggy says "I read somewhere", I can't help imagine some kind of combination of Reader's Digest and "Now!" magazine being hoarded in the basement for when Peggy needs a "fact".
I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.

On the setting, it's really strange how similar parts of the Midwest are to King of the Hill's depiction of Texas. I agree that picking Texas specifically was bold, but I think it's a lot more relatable to a large portion of the US than one would think.
I love King Of The Hill! When I was growing up I never missed an episode, it was pure goodness in an ever growing evil world! It's coming back, it's official!
bobby hill and the hank x bobby dynamic has aged so frickin well- with the extremes of the way boomers/gen x (parents) and millenials/gen z (kids) think only growing further apart over the last decade, the show is worth rewatching for that reason alone. But the jokes, continuity, warmth and nostalgia will keep it on in my home for years to come ❤️ Great video, man!
This show came out when I was a kid. I remember thinking the cigarettes episode was hilarious, but otherwise I couldn’t get into it. I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time. As an adult, I think it’s one of the most brilliant shows ever created.
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.

I agree! I'm a huge KOTH fan, but most analysis of it is far too superficial, and on the surface. There's so much depth within KOTH that is more than just a funny animated series, and this video showed it!
I can say that I grew up watching this show as a kid. Loved it since I was 7 years old! Simpsons, King of the Hill and Futurama were my faves growing up!
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.

As part of the Nascar audience they were trying to lure in I can say I loved it from day one. You get to laugh at the over-the-top progressives and ourselves in one show. Beautiful.
What an interesting philosophical analysis. Though in my case I did enjoy this show as a kid. Can't really say why looking back on it, I guess I just thought it was funny despite the more adult oriented humor and nuance. Though obviously this is my particular case and clearly others had/have different opinions. Kinda wish I had something deeper to add to this but I guess all I can say right now is that I enjoyed this and it really looks like you put a lot of thought into it. Plus now I feel like reading The Death of Common Sense.

it was aired in Philippines a decade ago. i think the network was JackTV. suffice to say our cable couldnt really get decent signal to watch on that channel smoothly so i missed out on watching it including South Park. i had to watch them online
Honestly, when I was a kid, I never got into KotH like I have as of recently, but I always remember being mesmerized by it when it would come on TV at the community center I frequented. Something about it always captivated me.
I have consistently come back to watch this video throughout the last 5 years. I find this video to be one of the best put together and edited analysis of a show or anything on UA-cam. Instead of just putting a random csgo video or gameplay In the background, this video puts clips which are relevant to what is being said in a way I have not seen anywhere else. The audio in the background ties it all together and I don’t think anyone else would do this in such a masterful way. I think this is my favorite UA-cam video

Been going through KOTH recently, haven't watched it for more than ten years and I've been enjoying how wholesome the episodes are, and how relatable the characters are. Awesome video, great commentary and the Hank Williams in the background sets the tone perfectly.
I love King of the Hill, especially the first six seasons. The storyline from the beginning of season two to the end of season three is so brilliant it’s insane. Some of the episodes, had they been live action it’s no doubt they’d have racked up the academy awards. They got a few but it’s a very underrated brilliantly written story.
Man this hits me in the feels. I Iived with my grandparents most my life and they recently passed. But every weekday on the TheU at 4pm an hour of king of the hill. Then the Simpsons was on at 5pm. We ate dinner(we know grandmas make great fuckin food) at 5:30 with the news. Then my grandfather religiously watched Seinfeld at 6pm. It was great.
That sounds like a great time in childhood. I’m sure you’ll always carry them in with you in life and whenever you do something great or generous - your grandparents are right there living on through the values and love and care they invested in you... I’m also sure they were most proud of you growing up to be a decent person and your time growing up with them must have been what made their life worth living snd im sure your childhood gave them a purpose they would have not had otherwise at that age. I might be a Californian born and raised (BWAAAAAH!) and we might be Oriental, but my family feels pretty American and I can relate to King of the Hill. I will admit that I was a little bit like Bobby when I was 8 until about 14. My dad was so much like Hank Hill that he even dressed like him and voted for Bush... Also, I grew up listening to Willie Nelson as my dad was a fan, following him from country, to country western to adult contemporary. I really do appreciate this show for all the reasons mentioned in this video but especially because it wasn't partisan.

If I'm not mistaken, the cinematography of King of the Hill requires the shot to be physically feasible with a hypothetical camera, except for dream and psychedelic sequences of course. The characters get into wild but never fantastical scenarios.
As someone that grew up in the deep south i can tell ya we love king of the hill. Hank isnt viewed as satire he is viewed as being an exaggeration of what we all feel and is extremely relatable and lovable. Cotton is by far the best damn character though
I love that so many of us have gone back to this show with adult eyes and finally enjoy what we didn't appreciate at first

I am a conservative that grew up in a very Hill-like culture. I laughed at and with the Hill's. I appreciate the show and hope it showed people in other cultures that we all have a lot in common.
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. Around the time the show closed out I was probably 14-15. It was something cute and fun to watch but nothing exceptional. I just recently went through the whole show 10 years later. And there were so many moments that truly captured Southern mentality. Seriously so well written as a show. I’d love a sequel taking place in now times. Maybe following Bobby as the man of the house trying to raise GH.

You don't HAVE to have been from a rural, small town kinda place to appreciate King of the Hill, but I think it helps. Hank and the guys remind me of SO MANY middle-aged adults I knew when I was a kid in rural Michigan.
No interests beyond their lawns and what route they take to work. Anything beyond the world of like 1972 just seems stupid and not worth learning to them. I made sushi to bring to Christmas once a couple years ago for appetizers, and half my uncles were like five-year-olds afraid to try it. Because it's like "This is a meat other than steak and vegetables other than potatoes! I'm not eating this!"
It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls.
To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"

Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao

I'm from Michigan as well and grew up in the 90s. This show was a satire of my dad and all his friends to a T. I think it does speak a bit more to rural americans who know these characters in real life.

It's so much like the little town I grew up in. We got little roadside produce stands like that everywhere, there's an Amish community nearby, their farm reminds me of my aunt and uncle's house and a few other friends.
And now Shoresy is set in a city of about 100k, just like where I live NOW.
I was born and raised in Texas and we did this same thing at my high school, where the football players dressed as cheerleaders and vice versa. Good ol Texas.
Honestly I was one of those kids that really liked king of the hill I always got excited to see it on tv and I would always try to the find the channel that would be airing on, idk why I just really liked it and I still do I love it in fact. I always rewatch it basically daily now ,King of the hill will be a big part of memories for a life time

The episodes with Buckley's death damn near had me in tears.
My ex-boyfriend/closest friend died last year and the Buckley’s angel episode helped me while grieving. He was only 31 and it’s so lonely going through it because most young people can’t relate. Funny to relate to a cartoon- but it touched my heart. I cry nearly every time I hear “Life in a Northern Town” now. It’s a beautiful episode.

As someone who grew up in a small town in the midwest, this show reminds me of so many people and situations I knew/know in real life. Probably one of the best and most accurate (and fair minded) portraits of middle america in pop culture. Hank may be a stick in the mud, but he's ultimately a good guy and often, in his own way, has a point,
one thing about KOTH that I dont think is appreciated enough is how the design of the characters is made in a way that doesn't look cartoonish. It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
3:20 You left out when Hank says, "Nudity!" And throws the troll into a box. It's maybe the funniest moment in the series.

I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.
I felt the same way,the episode with Kahn on anti pills was the last.

@@brucemorris3830 Actually that's correct. Hank and Bobby grilling was the intended series finale and meant to be aired last, but Fox forgot to air about 4 episodes and just dumped them after "To Sirloin With Love," but for all intents and purposes, it's the *true* finale.
The soundtrack to this was perfect, well done.

On the setting, it's really strange how similar parts of the Midwest are to King of the Hill's depiction of Texas. I agree that picking Texas specifically was bold, but I think it's a lot more relatable to a large portion of the US than one would think.

bobby hill and the hank x bobby dynamic has aged so frickin well- with the extremes of the way boomers/gen x (parents) and millenials/gen z (kids) think only growing further apart over the last decade, the show is worth rewatching for that reason alone. But the jokes, continuity, warmth and nostalgia will keep it on in my home for years to come ❤️ Great video, man!

This show came out when I was a kid. I remember thinking the cigarettes episode was hilarious, but otherwise I couldn’t get into it. I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time. As an adult, I think it’s one of the most brilliant shows ever created.
Love that you're using Hank Williams songs. His version of "I'm so lonesome I could cry" is my favorite!
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.
I can forgive hank for the doggy confusion. I'd be thrown off in that situation.
I've went through so many and so far this is the best analysis of king of the hill l've seen by a land slide. You are incredible at what you do.

I agree! I'm a huge KOTH fan, but most analysis of it is far too superficial, and on the surface. There's so much depth within KOTH that is more than just a funny animated series, and this video showed it!
I can say that I grew up watching this show as a kid. Loved it since I was 7 years old! Simpsons, King of the Hill and Futurama were my faves growing up!
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.
I used to watch this late at night with my dad. Great inter-generational show.

Though in my case I did enjoy this show as a kid. Can't really say why looking back on it, I guess I just thought it was funny despite the more adult oriented humor and nuance. Though obviously this is my particular case and clearly others had/have different opinions.

it was aired in Philippines a decade ago. i think the network was JackTV. suffice to say our cable couldnt really get decent signal to watch on that channel smoothly so i missed out on watching it including South Park. i had to watch them online

Honestly, when I was a kid, I never got into KotH like I have as of recently, but I always remember being mesmerized by it when it would come on TV at the community center I frequented. Something about it always captivated me.

I have consistently come back to watch this video throughout the last 5 years. I find this video to be one of the best put together and edited analysis of a show or anything on UA-cam. Instead of just putting a random csgo video or gameplay In the background, this video puts clips which are relevant to what is being said in a way I have not seen anywhere else. The audio in the background ties it all together and I don’t think anyone else would do this in such a masterful way. I think this is my favorite UA-cam video

Been going through KOTH recently, haven't watched it for more than ten years and I've been enjoying how wholesome the episodes are, and how relatable the characters are.
Awesome video, great commentary and the Hank Williams in the background sets the tone perfectly.

I love King of the Hill, especially the first six seasons. The storyline from the beginning of season two to the end of season three is so brilliant it’s insane. Some of the episodes, had they been live action it’s no doubt they’d have racked up the academy awards. They got a few but it’s a very underrated brilliantly written story.
Man this hits me in the feels. I Iived with my grandparents most my life and they recently passed. But every weekday on the TheU at 4pm an hour of king of the hill. Then the Simpsons was on at 5pm. We ate dinner(we know grandmas make great fuckin food) at 5:30 with the news. Then my grandfather religiously watched Seinfeld at 6pm. It was great.
That sounds like a great time in childhood. I’m sure you’ll always carry them in with you in life and whenever you do something great or generous - your grandparents are right there living on through the values and love and care they invested in you...
I’m also sure they were most proud of you growing up to be a decent person and your time growing up with them must have been what made their life worth living snd im sure your childhood gave them a purpose they would have not had otherwise at that age.
