Today, we're tackling a puzzling question: Why on Earth aren't fancy shape diamonds given cut grades? It's like they're the rebels of the diamond world. When it comes to evaluating the quality of a diamond, the four Cs (carat weight, color, clarity, and cut) are commonly used as the standard criteria. However, while round brilliant diamonds are given precise cut grades, fancy shape diamonds such as princess, emerald, and pear cuts are not. This raises the question: Why! In this video, we will explore the factors that contribute to this difference in grading practices and shed light on the complexities involved in assessing the cut of fancy shape diamonds. Plus I will give you advice on how to locate the right cut even though your certificate says otherwise.
Let's uncover the mysteries behind this glittering enigma!
    Cut Grade Conundrum:
    The Role of Cut Grade:
Cut grade is an essential aspect of diamond evaluation as it directly influences a diamond's brilliance, fire, and overall visual appeal. A well-cut diamond reflects and refracts light in a way that maximizes its beauty, making it highly desirable. The cut grade for round brilliant diamonds is determined based on precise proportions, symmetry, and other parameters. However, assessing the cut of fancy shape diamonds is more challenging due to their varying shapes, facet arrangements, and cut styles.
    Subjectivity in Sparkle:
Now, let's talk about the subjective nature of beauty. We all have different tastes and preferences when it comes to bling. What might make your heart skip a beat might leave someone else saying, "Meh." So, determining a cut grade that suits everyone's fancy shape desires becomes a bit of a diamond minefield. It's like trying to agree on the best pizza toppings - a never-ending debate! This subjectivity poses a challenge in establishing an objective grading system. Let’s take an oval for example, if you have a long length to width ratio, vs a shorter length, the shape of the diamond completely changes. With that shape change, now a different ideal table, depth and crown angle percentage needed to get the maximum brilliance for that shape. With a round diamond, it’s relatively easy to get a perfect 1 to 1 ratio, a circle almost every time. Making the shape predictable. With a predictable shape, a diamond cutter can craft the perfect angle each time with precision, ensuring a diamond cut is ideal. An oval diamond can go from a 1.20 to a 1.70 length to with ratio, giving a massive range of different table, depth and grown angle percentages thus giving the diamond cutter a harder time.
    Unleashing the Alternatives:
Don't fret amigos, Just because these fancy shape diamonds don't get official cut grades doesn't mean we're left in the dark. Option 1: learn about your particular shape and what gets its juices going. If you click the link below, I have created an article specifically on this topic, you will find what I consider ideal for each shape, plus I give you examples of what a beautiful ideal cut looks like. With the information about the numbers plus visual confirmation. I think this will help you get some confidence in your next purchase.
You also have the option to shop at a few vendors that have line of cuts that have lighting testing n their fancy stones and actually get an excellent proven by science cut grade. Now, this comes with a premium and This isn’t available for a lot of diamonds but some shapes. Like Princess cuts, Cushion cuts, radiant cuts, ovals, you an get a excellent cut diamond guaranteed,
    Conclusion:
And there you have it, my diamond darlings! The captivating mystery of why fancy shape diamonds don't get cut grades. Their diverse shapes, unique facet arrangements, and the subjective nature of beauty make it quite the challenge to create a universal grading system. But fear not! We can still assess their quality based on proportions, symmetry, and our personal preferences. So, go forth and let your fancy shape diamonds dazzle with their ungraded glory!

My fav specs are round cut, VS2 clarity, D-F color, excellent cut, slightly thick and faceted girdle, no flourescent, and no culet. Also review the GIA report as there are some inclusions to avoid.

Great show! Can you comment on ideal cut dimensions (for round diamonds) since there are many websites that have different opinions as to the crown angle/ pavilion angle, etc. Thank you!

You have truly helped me out bro. My diamond knowledge was horrible since I’m not much of a jewelry person. I was able to pick the perfect diamond while saving money. I bought a cushion diamond with perfect dimensions, 1.04ct, VS1, D color, super Ideal. It was around $4500 before tax. This was amazing because Kay Jewelry was trying to sell me a cushion diamond ring for over $7000 with no diamond certification. When it was placed under a microscope, I noticed so many inclusions!

I watched your newest video and decided to watch another. Definitely got a subscriber from a man who is literally buying a wedding ring for my soon to be wife. Thanks for the quick, concise advice. If you can answer me one thing really quick? Do you know of the company diamondere? Should I get a ring from them?

Awesome information! Can you please give a review on Ritani Diamonds? I am purchasing an engagement ring soon and their prices are much more affordable than James Allen or Blue Nile. I need to know if Ritani diamonds are legit or not because the prices seem too good to be true! Thank you for the videos and keep up the great work!

Just bought from them, came with a great package including paper IGI Report, was delivered in 5 days instead of promised 15. Would buy from them again, I mean why to overpay for James Allen for same certified IGI diamond?
