What an amazing demonstration! This really displays what I'm learning in my Strength of Materials class, that the more brittle material, which has a shorter elastic region on the stress-strain graph will reach the point of permanent deformation much earlier, but with a higher stress requirement.
Not all brittle materials have shorter elastic region. The better way to tell brittle material apart is the absence of permanent (plastic) deformation.
