I opened a bank account myself a few months ago on a 60 day visa waiver in Hua Hin. Because I was planning to convert the visa waiver to a non-o retirement visa, I had already taken a 6 month lease on a condo. Two Kaisakorn branches refused me based on visa type, but Bangkok Bank were willing to do it.
The key document they required was a 'letter of residence for opening a bank account' from the immigration office.
When I initially went into the bank to enquire, I was told that I would also have to buy a B5,000 accident insurance policy, but when I went in the next day with the correct documents, I dealt with a different bank clerk, and there was no mention of the insurance.
Was refused by Bangkok Bank with an immigration letter. Was told by every bank you must have a type O visa, no exceptions.
Some branches will deny you regardless of documents you have.
However… if you have O visa it does seem more likely they will give you a account.
@KMOinT different rules for different branches. This is why I suggest ones away from tourist spots.
Correct, They can offer it like any other service, but its like you say, not required.
@@DiscoveringThailand they can make it sound like it is required though
using phrases that can be interpreted both ways, especially with the language barrier and poor english
Great video, clearly explained, THANK YOU!
A slight correction, I'm with Bangkok Bank (BBL), and often transfer money from Thailand to Australia on the BBL application 🙂
All good, enjoy!
Oh, good to know. Thanks for sharing that. 👍
Very helpful video, thank you. I am going to take your advice and try and get a Bangkok Bank account using an agent. One thing I noticed you said that is incorrect; Seven Eleven is not cash only, you can use credit / debit card if the purchase is 200 baht or more
Ok.. also I think there is a card you can put credit on to use also. But they won't take my scan/pay wave bangkok bank.
Great content. Will definitely come in handy.
Your welcome 🙏
Hi, i got my Bangkok bank account last november trough a visa agent..works like a dream and the app for the phone is amazing, specially the qr scan and pay methode ... but a day ago i see a new update from the visa agent on UA-cam and they say that it is now mandatory to get a Insurance policy with it!! So i think i was very lucky to get one without it.
were you get all crap from never pay whit my phone and me have insurance stop fake news
Great video. Thank you for this!
Great info as usual Pete. So there is no need to get a credit card? Some hotels require you to pay with a credit card?
Thai banks won't give you a credit card. Only savings debit card. Hotels will take your home country credit card. 👍
@@DiscoveringThailand they will give you a credit card if you open another account at your bank and whatever amount you put into that account that will be your credit limit. TIT
Thank you for the useful information you gave.
Glad it was helpful!
Another very informative video thanks mate. What interest rate do they pay on simple savings accounts like that one.
I think it's only 1.5% now on savings deposits.
@@DiscoveringThailand Thanks for that. Cheers.
Thanks for another great info video. When I get over there, I will be constantly reviewing your videos because they are so informative and helpful for a newbie. May I ask a random question? when I eventually get over there, I intend to get a motorbike licence and eventually would like to buy a small scooter to get around town, however, I would like to get a small scooter that uses manual transmission (like the Honda Sonic) to practice getting comfortable using manual transmission but do you know of any other brands that also uses manual transmission? Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. I don't know of manual scooters.. but maybe some of the larger ones are. Mine is a 125 and most this size are auto. I would prefer manual also. Cheers :)
@@kin-c72 The most common non-automatic bike in Thailand is Honda Wave. They are manual only, 110 and 125 cc. Good and cheap bike 👍
In March 2024 I opened a bank account at the Bangkok Bank branch Central Plaza Udon Thani. The help and service was good. Straight forward. Beside the official rental docs for my house I had to show from the immigration a letter of residence. To open the bank account, the branch manager informed me that it was required to have a life insurance of THB 50,000 per year for 8 years. Per year THB 5000 will be returned on my bank account and after 10 year full payout of the saved amount plus some percentage. This is with Bangkok Life Assurance Public Company LTD. and expect it is a part of Bangkok Bank. With this insurance they can 'prove' that a bank account is required. For me it was no problem to accept as it is a kind of saving some money over the years.
were you get all crap from life insurance are crap bangkok bank not true what you say only stay 20 years here have bangkok bank they dont have good saving account me vill be safe only get 2 % a year have thai investment give 1,25% a month legaly but only for thai not in the bank have that
@ First of all use a better attitude. I just said what happend to me. That is all.
There are 3 ways to meet the money requirement for a retirement visa. 1. bank account with 800,000 Bhat or about $23,186.
2. show a monthly income of 65.000 Bhat $ 1,883. 3. A combination of bank account & monthly income.
Thanks Peedah!
I enquired with an agent about opening a thai bank account as a tourist. They said a local thai phone number was a requirement (for security codes I presume). This isn't hard to get and number can be kept active even if not in Thailand. I did not hear you mention about a mobile number & think best to get a number before doing anything else. They also said they can sort out an address to use & do everything else. Fee is around 5k baht. Another question I have about Bangkok bank card is can you place the card on temporary hold until you need to use it?
You can't put on hold your card, but you don't need to. Before I moved here permanently, I never used it, and when I did visit, it worked fine. So long as it don't expire.
@@nuts2559 if you get a Bangkok Bank card, you can lock and unlock your card through their phone app.
thank you
You're welcome
I don’t see the link for an agent. Which agent do you suggest using in Chiangmai?
I use Assist Thai Visa in Chiang mai.
@@DiscoveringThailand how much you pay for the agent
@judithchen5673 I hear it's about 5000 baht. Was 2000 4 years ago when I used an agent.
going on your own to open a bank account on the tourist visa won’t work
i tried it last year with different banks in Bangkok
they need a student visa, a work visa and spousal visa
and i don’t really understand what is the problem
is there some liability with foreign citizens’ accounts? are they afraid of some dodgy transactions?
i did not try with an agent though, because i guess it costs in tens of thousands of baht, well definitely more than ten thousand, and i am not willing to pay such amount of money
I think most agents charge about 5000 baht. Thanks for your comment
@ it is much better then
I opened a bangkok bank account last year with an agent 5000 baht with a 30 day tourist visa .was in the bank twenty minutes. I dont have an address in Thailand
Yes its that easy ! Prices seem to have gone up over the years but still a good investment. 👍
Can I ask which agent you used? I am looking to open an account when I return in a couple of weeks.
@blacksam042379 the agent I used 3 years ago has since passed away. I don't think they exist now.
@@blacksam042379 in pattaya I used one stop visa bottom of soi 6 .used them 3 times now .excellent service. I used them for
Bank account, visa extension, driving licence
Hi. If your in a different province there's no ฿12 fee if you do a QR Code withdrawl
Also the ฿20 fee for using other banks ATM'S the bangkok bank allows 4 fee free withdrawls each month
Thanks for the info! Most things you don't need cash for anymore even your small street vendors, I think this is great and convenient.
@DiscoveringThailand yes I know this
me get free hole year but have bigger money there
Where do they send the new card?
Whatever mailing address you have with them.
Have you kept your Australian tax residency, if so how?
I earn a tiny amount from UA-cam, that's income to my Australian bank. I will submit a tax return this year, even if its well under the tax free threshold.
I think the point is from my original post is, if you are genuinely living in Thailand with a Non O visa/Work Permit/Tax card and have a rental agreement and evidence to prove this, there are banks that will allow you to open a bank account without any agent fee. It also helps if you are married to a Thai! As I said in the last post they are by order from the Bank of Thailand making sure your real purpose for opening an account is not for using the account to launder money! With the prevalence of literally thousands of call center and scammers in the surrounding countries it is logical that they are making it difficult to open a bank account willy nilly.
what you want whit this crap comment its bull shit stay 20 years phuket now better but its my way over here dont want learn that to others
not make money on that????????
Nong Khai 15 minutes down the river from Chiang Mai? 😂 You lost me after that!
The map location link is in the description.
You must have a type O visa to open a bank account in Thailand. Even if immigration gives you written permission to open one the banks will not accept it. Now Thailand becoming a Brics member you will have to be from a Brics country to open one if the Brics system actually gets off the ground.
Your last statement is nonsense. Of course you will never "have to be" from a Brics member country to open a bank account. Who on earth gave you that idea.. And, it is very doubtful that Thailand will be a Brics member. They will do business with member countries of course, as well as with non-Brics countries. But I really doubt they'll be members themselves. They don't need to, and as far as I know, they are not in the process of becoming a member either. A partner yes, just like they partner other nations, but a member, no. Thailand is always in it for the money, having relations with anyone for their own economical benefit.
I agree with you and to @indiandaeng 1st point. My whole video is to show that "You must have a type O visa to open a bank account in Thailand." statement is incorrect. Thanks for your comment.
@@MrEye4get You are partly correct. Many use a visa agent to solve this issue. They fix both for you. However, you can obtain an O visa outside Thailand too, and for that it's not required to have a Thai bank account.
@@DiscoveringThailand you wrong no1 have money big one rest your video crap for me and dont start make visa
I think you need a new mic your very difficult to hear.
In pattaya Bk bank buy 5000bht insurance and supply adress and show passport you'll get a bank ac. Dec 2024
How old are you?
@RETUSAF1995 I open my account in pattaya 3 years ago I was 64, note you have to give them a Thai address
Some bloggers say in 7/11 you can pay with card/ mobile phone in Pattaya. it's very confusing. You mention is not possible...
There is a card you can put credit on and use, but I have not tried it.
maybe he meant Rabbit card
i see terminals with its logo all the time, but never used it outside BTS
Can you open an account if your 'address' is a hotel? (Fair enough, I'm staying in the hotel for more than a month). Oh, and on a tourist visa, this time.*
*I obviously asked this question before watching the very end of the video 😂😂😂
I was in a hotel and it was used as my address when I used an agent 3 years ago in Pattaya. I was on a tourist visa.
@@DiscoveringThailand Were you on a tourist VISA or a tourist VISA WAIVER?
@andrewrobinson2565 60 day tourist visa.
@@DiscoveringThailand Normally, unless there are special circumstances, you can't open a bank account in Pattaya anymore on a tourist visa, or on a visa exemption. You need to use an agent. Things have changed in recent years.
@@DiscoveringThailand can you deposit money in cash at the branch in this account or you can transfer only by WIRE( SWIFT ) if open on tourist visa
