Don't "should" on yourself. Instead, ask, "How might my life improve if I..?." (as opposed to "SHOULD I...?) Asking how is more positive and encourages solution-seeking, whereas asking SHOULD feels like pressure.

I guess in time we just got tired of stuff and large home. we just ate tired and want more freedom to enjoy life and have some extra money. sometimes stuff owns you instead of you owning stuff. Freedom

This video has gotten me to think about my situation. TOO large a home now that children are on their own, too expensive insurance for home , hate lots of stuff, lots of time cleaning and maintenance on home. I am in my mid 50s and hubby is in his early 60s and we are both tired of having to deal with a big home and land. need something simple and easier to care for. taxes are low here , so that us a plus
when he retires we are moving to a more tax friendly state for retirees. we just want simple living and left up keep and less insurance bills and repairs. home is fairly new. but we are just tired if keeping it up and want to go to a state with milder winters. Love your videos and message.

I think it is great to 'simplify' and downsize. I would just be wary of moving into an HOA condo situation. Those rates can be relentless.. and not all are managed well.
My hubby & I want to remain IN CHARGE of our expenses, etc. while downsizing.

When first married (26 yrs ago) hubby and I bought a small house (1900 sq ft). Although we always felt it was too small once the kids came we also felt it would be way too stressful to sell/move. We paid off the house in about 8 years and saved/invested. Now, kids are out of the house and we live in the perfect retirement house. No moving necessary. With the money we saved over the years we paid cash for a condo for each of our two kids. We live in an expensive city and their friends can’t believe the low rent they pay (to their parents) to live in such nice, cute apartments. Don’t know how long we’ll have the condos but for now everyone is happy.

Oh my word where do I begin. Adopted my 22 mth granddaughter at 60. We bought a big house in October of last year. It’s way to much for me to upkeep with a granddaughter so I have a house keeper. We have debt n a house payment n I’m already wanting to sell even tho I love my home. It’s to early for us to do that n will lose $ if we do so 2 more yrs then we can sell. I want a manufactured home n a little property for gardening. Smaller for upkeep n care. More $ for retirement. Praying for wisdom n guidance from the Lord. Thank you for sharing this it is encouraging n informative. God bless

I've had several people ask what my professions is. I was a youth pastor for 5 years and went to grad school at Denver Seminary. This is where I picked up the public speaking 'attributes'. Long story short, I am now a police officer full time. I do pro bono work for local churches and not-for-pofit organizations to assist in their media needs on the side.

Comical, that the video has to assure Americans that downsizing isn’t failure. Most Americans purchase much to much .

  • @mtzlfldt

Being mid life empty nesters, one of the big incentives for downsizing was that we don't want our "stuff" to be a burden on our children after we pass away. Its been a hard process but the more we get done I definitely feel happier.

We have decided to do it too
5300 sq feet to 2400. maybe not even the last move but its a start
scary but we know its time, retired and rattling around in a huge home is just plain stupid and crazy expensive to keep up!

Have you ever wanted something so badly (ex. vintage car), saved and worked to acquire it, only to realize it didn't fulfill you and make you as happy as you thought it would? Yeah? Me too.

It would be less stressfull and easier to listen to you if there would be no "backgroundmusic" while you are speaking. Frankly speaking it is quite annoying and so loud. Your voice and your content are pretty enough for us, there is no music needed. Thanks!

I've been so depressed in my apartment. I have a 3 bedroom apartment both of my siblings moved out because they didn't want to pay for their portion rent and now I have so much space that I'm not using. I want new couches and a new table and sell the rest of everything out of my 2 back rooms. Idk what to do.

I went from a home to an apartment and apartment living has problems too but just different ones. My decision was to move back into a home and for me that is the best way to live. I think what you're suggesting is "less is more" but sometimes, in fact, less is less.

I pay 900 a month in interest and 500 plus in property taxes and that’s not including principal. I’m selling my 2500 sq foot home next summer I’m SINGLE and my son is moving out. I’m done with the big house. I don’t want to work till I’m 75 paying it off. I will be able to pay off my mortgage next home. I’m out! Thank you. Good questions. Great video!

Lindsey Domer I’m in the process of downsizing now. Just signed papers to buy a Townhouse near my son & daughters. I’m getting up in years & they wanted me nearer to them as I’m now about 45 min away. I love the home I currently have. It’s not big but the yard & maintenance are too much for me & my son has his own house to take care of. The Townhouse will be ready in June (building starts next week) so at least I have time to dejunk 26 years of stuff I have accumulated in this home. Downsizing is the right thing or me!!
