Ed and Al head to the home of their alchemy teacher and in the process we get backstory on The Elric Brother's father, their teacher, and their training, as well as a glimpse at the theory behind not only alchemy but the entire universe: One is All, All is One.
Synopsis: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an animated series in which two brothers search for a Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their mother goes awry and leaves them in damaged physical forms.

NON SPOILER ALER: Ed and Al’s mom didn’t kill herself, she died of disease, a plague. Ed is angry at his father cos he left and then afterwards his mom died so he’s kinda connecting the two instances in a way. Like he’s angry at him for leaving her to die instead of being by their side when she did die. Sorry if this comes off as a spoiler to you

a bit more justification is that their father was a skilled alchemist, with books on a wide variety of alchemical fields, who may have been able to help her survive.

Also I mean, he also left his kids to deal with their mom's death on their own. Like you could argue "he couldn't have known" but had he been there, Ed and Al wouldn't have been alone. Maybe they wouldn't have needed to use the human transmutation, you could even push the thought further and say that Ed believes that they would have managed the human transmutation with him. It's always easy to blame the "absent figure" because they're not there, and seeing how young they were and how distant Hoenheim seemed with them (as seen for example in the episode with Nina) Ed probably interpreted it as Hoenheim not caring, about their mother or about them too. Actually, the ending of this episode contrasts with that feeling: Izumi shows empathy for Ed and Al, where they've never gotten it from their own remaining parent, who is absent. That's how you see that Izumi is their parent and has been ever since they've been under her care. These are two kids without parents, and a woman who can't have children. Perfect match and this episode just seals it all.

Ed and Al's mom died of a disease that ravaged their part of the country after the Ishvalan War. Ed has no logical reason to hold his father accountable for his mother's death. He's hurt and angry about losing both parents and it's easier for him to assign blame to the parent who walked out than confront those feelings.

But the level of analysis and connection to personal thoughts and experiences on this channel makes it the best I've seen. I feel like Goodwin truly understands the deeper intentions behind a lot of shows, not just what's plainly seen and heard. It's like I'm in a philosophy class I actually want to be in. I grew up in a preachers home and my view of the world and universe has changed a lot since I was younger. I'm more in line with an Edward now on most things spiritual. I feel like my world expanded so much when I started learning more about the universe.. it made things more scary, but also so much more interesting. People like Carl Sagan in his Cosmos series helped me step back from my own perspective and start to question or see things differently. I feel like it's hard for a lot of people to break out of their initial bubble.. It's so comfortable and we have many people around us that believe similarly, and processes in our brain which tend to confirm the beliefs we start with. We always have to be vigilant we don't fall into comfort, and constantly push to learn more and understand.. It ends up helping us greatly in my view. Love your channel, thank you for your commentary and reactions.

Modern alchemy usually typecast it as either being a proto-science (precursor to chemistry) or being a "Magical skill" that turns ordinary metals into gold or makes you immortal. But like with most things, it's far more nuanced than what modern pop culture or textbooks like to describe. The origins of alchemy are deeply rooted into exploring natural philosophical thought-from African, Asian (mostly Chinese), Arabic (the most influential), and European (greco-roman) influences-with a touch of mysticism. So the fact that this series (especially the manga) also has philosophical discussions is just one more reason why I like it so much.

Arakawa is a phenomenal writer. If you have the time, i implore you to read the original FMA graphic novels. There are 3 in 1 versions available that are stupid cheap and consists of 9 volume. The anime due to its format, cuts out a few stuff. The manga has some serious detail and research put behind it. But at the same time, the anime enhances quite a few moments with its visuals. I recently colected all the graphics novels, and I am still blown away by Arakawa's writings and drawings. She is amazing. Since we are on the topic, my one of the three gripes with the anime is that it could never truly capture Arakawa's art style. I find it very interesting that you came to a similar observation about you being the best you can be and connecting that to the universe as I did. I believe that those laws of the universe screech into morality and our conscience is that law written onto our hearts. On a side note I love it when you talk about this stuff, it's so rare and even frowned on but I can't get enough of it especially when it's coming from an honest actor like yourself who seems to be doing it not for ideological, political or religious (not that those are inherently bad) reasons but simply because they love understanding.

this is going to be way more analysis-ish than usual for me.
they way that i see it, you can't really ask the universe to care about us, because it is not in it's nature. and if reconfiguring that to "the universe cares about all of things the same" helps you, well, good for you.
life is worth living because we don't have anything else to do.
there probably isn't much else to that. no naturally good dids, unless you decide to believe in something.
and in the moment that you start believing in something, suddenly you have something to center the world around.
if we would have had any other choice, we would been able to decide.
(I'm not counting suicide, since there doesn't seem to be an inherent difference between it and living life regularly).
but right now all we can try and do is make our time as pleasant as possible (if it wasn't clear, doing good counts as long term pleasantries).
i mean, if there is a kind of next world, it probably won't really count when you enter it so you basically have about 80 years of good feelings to earn.
and if there's not, well, actually not much changes if you think about it.

I enjoyed early on how you really zeroed in on this idea from a fundamental level. Alchemy is just turning something into something else, which at it's core just means that everything is connected in some way. But as we've also seen it's not all just scientific, there is a deeply spiritual and philosophical aspect to it that you MUST learn. Or, you know, or else.
Also, Ed mentions their Mother passed away due to a sickness and it seems like Ed really just equates his father leaving to all bad things in his life. Which as you pointed out is kind of the child brain just seeing causality and never readjusting their viewpoint. Ed remains furious with his father while at the same time since Al never reassessed his love for his father, never blamed him so even now to him his father is someone he looks forward to seeing again, even if Ed dissuades him from that notion.

Just found that you did FMAB and gonna binge these. Your insight in the show and outside is so fun to listen to. I know you've finished the show by now but you seeing Mustang's eventual character flaw right after Hughes died as well as a few other spot on reads is great.
As someone who loves philosophy (Christianity in particular), you seem to get very close many times talking about your understanding of the universe.
    - 11:13 That chain of reasoning seems valid but assumes value. What does it mean to be the 'best' in a universe with no mind behind it? How can rules or standards of goodness/badness exist where there is no invention, assessment, and enforcement?
    - 17:25 You're so close. You even say the phrase 'a common thread' which comes from the Biblical idea of the scarlet thread that appears throughout the Bible in different stories leading to Christ. The symbolism is that the thread is the blood of Christ and Christ is the Truth made flesh. Long story short: The common thread that holds everything together is the Truth.
I hope you can endure a few more of my ramblings if you are reading these and I hope you're not too offput by my perspective. Hope you're well and thanks for your insightful discussions.

The way I see it, it only makes sense that human morality and behavior is tied to the laws that govern the nature of the universe, because that behavior developed within the framework of those laws itself, and the fact that those behaviors have persisted for as long as they have, even if it's just a blip in time, means there's something sustainable about them that isn't so diametrically opposed to the laws of nature that nature has yet to crush us in any absolute manner (although it has gotten close). We've paid attention long enough as a species to know that's what it does to things that stand in it's way. No matter what upper hand humans think they're gaining on nature, there's always a level higher than what we're working on that's ready to smash us into the dirt if we overstep in any significant way, and that may be nature's/the universe's way of saying "wrong answer".
I could talk about this kind of stuff forever. These kinds of subjects have interested me (to a fault at times) throughout a majority of my life.

    • @AGoodwinTV
      @AGoodwinTV  3 роки тому +1

Very well said and I think that makes a lot of sense. I mean... one way of thinking about it is how could human morality NOT be tied to the laws of the universe? We are born from that very universe and subject to its rules. And one rule seems to be if you can't cut it here, you're out. And so morality is something that formed consciously but also unconsciously and organically along the lines of what aligns us with higher principles.

    • @Rannulfus
      @Rannulfus 3 роки тому

@@AGoodwinTV Exactly! We know it was formed that way as well, because we've witnessed behavior that is so similar to our own that it's often times familiar in other animals that we observe. Animals that we diverged from evolutionarily hundreds of thousands to millions of years ago. These things aren't just ingrained into us as humans, but they're the mechanisms that seem to drive the forward development of all life as we currently know it. Maybe not all of the behaviors WE have as humans are necessary, but there's something intrinsic about at least a few of them that causes them to manifest in other beings that are sharing this experience with us on this same planet, and, perhaps ultimately, the same universe.
I think it might be safe to say that is why things such as religions ended up coming about. Back then, people may not have had the words to properly articulate a lot of what we know now about the nature of human behavior, but they were still observant, so it seems the info about human behavior was told through allegorical stories, and passed on, with one or more gods coming to be representatives of such things as higher purposes and principals. Many people ended up taking those stories to be literal, but in the absence of a proper means to gain clear understandings of the functions of the world, I don't think I can bring myself to blame them, and I'm an atheist, or a former atheist (perhaps agnostic?), so you would be forgiven for expecting harsher viewpoint from me specifically. I used to be bitter about it, for sure, but in my recent attempts to understand things better, I've reconciled those feelings and have even come to appreciate religion for what it's done to get humanity as far as we've gotten, even despite the many horrible things people have done and still do in it's name.

Sig and Izumi are relationship goals, personally think they're the best couple in the show
Someone already mentioned the difference in training between manga and anime, but reunion went differently too, also in manga flashback Izumi specifically tells them not ever to try human transmutation
There's some other details from that chapter that didn't make it to the anime but those are more of character depth than plot
Two of my favourite characters are coming soon and I'm excited, though also salty how much with them was cut in the anime >w>
Few things make much more sense in manga due to how much anime cuts but anime sticks to the main idea and philosophy so overall they did a good job delivering that 🤔

Its made by the same creators as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, and delves into some really cool esoteric topics in a great goofy way.
