Froogle takes a look at what's involved in making FSX run on multiple machines, separating out addons to lessen the load on the main flying machine.
Just got around to getting a new FSX rig and decided to use my old one to run AS16 and ProATC-X via WideFS. After hours of struggling to get it working with no luck, I ran across this video. After following your instructions, I had ProATC-X up and running in seconds. You're a lifesaver and I appreciate all the informational videos you produce. I'm still having issues getting AS16 up and running but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the WideFS end because it connects to FSX-SE on my main computer, it just isn't loading the weather. Thanks again!
Dude... you just saved me a month of epic tantrums, rage quiting... Because I read like over 20 documents, open up like 30 links, all for the sake of running this on Client. I follow your instruction after 10 falsed youtube fails of explaining. And you help me to get it RIGHT!!!!! Don't delete this video LOL.
Your a CHAMP!!!!
It really doesn't matter to me whether my system works after watching this video, this video was well done and I appreciate the information provided. Thanks for putting the effort forward for the rest of us....
Thanks Froogle....I know you open yourself up to a storm of questions when you do these videos, hence your reluctance....but thanks so much I appreciate this and all your videos......I know this is an old video but it is still current in the FSX world.
I was working on this issue and after watching your tuto I think i won't need any other one.
Everything is very clear and well presented. Thanks for your magnifique effort and share.
Peter Cooke... Albert Eisnstein... Logi Baird... Brian Wilson...
& Froogle Featherstonehaugh... All geniuseses.
Many many thanks, matey!
Froogle you are the man... After countless hours of browsing AVSIM and trying to get activesky to run from networked computer, I was pulling my hair out! I did all they said touching all the same ini, cfg, and xml files you described here but now luck.
You 30 minute video here and now I have it all up and running. I'm not sure exactly what made the connection work, but a couple of differences I did notice from AVSIM advice: in the XML file, I had scope as LOCAL, you had global. Thanks again!
Froogle you are my HERO.....I have been trying to get AS16 to work over a network for 4 weeks.....your video pointed the way....Thank you
Thanks to this video I have gotten the networking set up. It took a bit to get SimConnect configured properly but now working fine. Thank you Frooglesim.
Hi Froogle. A great video that puts everything into easy terms.
I did find something in your instructions that stopped it working for me and a few others, and that is in your SimConnect.xml file.
The second SimConnect.Comm section setting up an AUTO/LOCAL protocol stops the previous GLOBAL one working.
I had problems connecting until I deleted the second section in your SimConnect.xml file.
I deleted the lines
False
Auto
local
And then it all worked.
Thanks again.
Thank You Froogle... Every time I do a drive wipe and reinstall, I use this guide (Mainly for P3d) because the way you explain it is excellent.
Great guide ! Thank you so much froogle, you are the first who did a video tutorial about this issues !
YESSS!!! After about 13 hours og headaches I finally got this working. My struggle was simconnect. If anyone is having problems, this is what fixed it for me: Stupid as I am I created the xml , ini files in notepad, saving them with their respective .ini , cfg ending. Make sure that all these 3 files have their correct "type"
Great video...worked like a charm! For those that might ask, as I did, you don't need to load SDK on the notebook (non FSX pc) as Froogle explains in great detail even though in his video it shows it loaded in his Programs Installed when he is showing the 3 MSI programs on the notebook. Just load the 3 SimConnect programs in order as explained.
Thank you, Thank you! It's people like you that make our hobby special!
I've had to use your tutorial quite exhaustively going back and forth. For this topic I haven't found a better reference !! Twice I have installed this very tricky operation. Twice ? because of usual computing let downs with my equipment. Much valued video footage ~ Many Thanks........Good Job
Hi Froogle, many many thanks for this guide. I appreciate you are not an expert on it but it gives us all a starting point with which we can all troubleshoot from if we get into problems!
What an excellent question! FSINN works this way. I have not tried squawkbox. The issue though with Vatsim add-ons working this way is of course sound - how to get it both in and out of the second PC while not breaking the immersion on the main one. To that end, I use the Astro A40 and Mixamp which works like a charm - sound is piped in and out of the mixamp from the second pc. PTT works on the main PC but the mixamp feeds my voice out to the second and I have a knob to control the volume.
On my machine, it's probably around 10 frames, but you do get a lot more consistency out of the frame rate, so its not jumping up and down a lot and remains pretty solid. It also means if something should crash, then it doesn't take the sim down. Finally, having them on a separate machine means you can interact with them without having to alt-tab (which kills the sound on FSX), so you can run FSX full screen and still have access to all the utilities themselves without issue.
Really pleased to hear that - this is such complex subject its nice to hear when it works.
It's what worked for me. If you look on the acceleration pack you will find that the SDK there is different to the others- it is actually called the FSXAccelerationSDK or something similar. The only way I managed to get ProATC/X to work with Simconnect was using the client from this specific SDK.
Got it to work just as described, thanks for doing this Froogle.
thank you so much for this Froogle I have been struggling networking active sky for weeks just couldn't get them to connect until watching this video
Nice one froogle. Saving this one to my favorites for the future.
Keep up the hard and good work, man. You've earnt every single subscriber/viewer you have. You always help me in ways manuals can't. Whether it be the 737, 777, Airbus, FSX itself, or X-Plane!
thanks so much for your great videos froogle, Iv been simming about 10 years now, and you are one of the most helpful and i would guess knowledgable that i have encountered. I am also getting my head around the PMDG 737 NGX, and still flying the PMDG 747. Because of your tutorial I bought Active Sky 20121, which one of these days soon I shall get running over the network. Yes I am having issues getting simconnect going, but I am getting on top of them as we speak. Thanks again. Very informative
Don't know why your giving SimConnect a bad rep to install, I just followed this guide and it worked first time! ;)
Works likes a dream Froogle thank you very much for doing this. :)
Thank You
For years I have been toying with connecting another comp to work with FSX Now through your vid I have a good working background on how to proceed
One question do (In my case)Both computers Need the same operating system ie Win7 Cheers
Mike from Scotland :)
YOU ABSOLUTE SAINT!!
I have just followed this from start to finish, picked myself up a new alienware and bought WideFS, now my efb and everything is running over on my old PC, im getting 30fps nicely.
Great tutorial and thank you for doing it, especially as you didnt want to in the first place.
Are you running REX on your FSX pc or your laptop?
Ugh - I can't make a reocmmendation there. My machine is great but old, and I've not looked too much at what's around currently. There is a whole section of AVSIM that looks at this, and I know that Kostas' tweaking guide also goes into some detail on hardware recommendations.
Thanks froogle, this video helped me get mine up and running.
More than welcome - glad you liked it.
Great explanation, it should help a lot of folks.
Froogle! If im not wrong, I remember back in one of your first 737NGX videos you said that you were looking at the PMDG MD-11.... That would be a cool series if you flew the MD-11 :D
A and B are reserved for floppy disks. C is your built in default storage.
Some applications will run on external machines without needing simconnect - I point that out at the beginning of this video when I talk about Aivlasoft EFB.
Hi Frooglesim, I now i asked you earlier about this and i just found it. :P . nice video : but I like e to point you to one thing, sharing you C drive is not the best Idea . I would recommend having flight sim on a dedicated hard drive on its own and share the whole thing to the second computer that way its much safer and you know all your flight sim files and folders and data are in one HDD . Please correct me if this is not possible or wrong overall very good and easy to understand VID
Thanks for sharing
For me this is basic networking in a sense, but for others it's not that easy. You explained really well. Question, wouldn't a Dual NIC on both computers, hooked up to a 10/100/1000 switch make it more like one machine?
Nice work anyway.
Great video... I went right out and bought the software from Pete and what a mistake that was for me. I should have researched. NONE of my heavy hitting addons; Ultimate Traffic 2, VoxATC, PMDG 737 NGX, REX 2 work on a remote platform basis, with the exception of Rex 2's weather injector. So I have all this fancy SimConnect, WideFS and FPSUIC stuff installed and working with nothing to run on it... lol. That'll teach me to get overly excited about something without researching it.
Yup! Got it all up and running in P3D as well! Thanks for the help! 👍👍
The video is easy to follow. Before going to the expense of buying x2 FSUIPC licenses etc, how many FPS does the average user actually gain? Is it just 1-2 or something more significant? x2 FSUIPC and WideFS licenses will cost about $75.
very well explained!
What about distributing the workload on different CPU´s on the same machine? I have done this with a shareware program and run all the weather program and traffic stuff on CPU 0 and FSX on CPU 1-3. Helped a lot, no more stutters, very smooth flying even at lower frame rates which are more affected by the scenery and cannot be avoided.
Please let me know how to achieve. My computer shows that I have an i7 Process and 8 processor.... but I don't know what to do with them or how to configure it all for FSX benefit...
Great video was wondering what type of notebook u had
I ran in to truble took me hours to figure out what was wrong but then i ran a update on netframe work and did a restart and everything connected. Thanks so much for the help
One of my favorites Addons SimTouch2 which is airplane instruments like gps, switches maps and more works great in a network pc, I have my with a touch screen and is awesome.
but couldn't get Rex Plus OD to work, I followed the procedure but when it says to put the xml file in the folder, windows tried to replace with the one from SimTouch2. If you knows something I don't just let me know.
I've been waiting for this tutorial.. another great work Froogle!!
Wonderful to hear - glad it helped.
Great Setup. You said in your video a cheap netbook is all you Need to run Aktive Sky on a network. Should this be an actual one or would do it a three years old one like the Asus Eee PC 1008P with 1G DDR2 Memory, 250GB HDD, Intel Atom N450 1.66Ghz too?
If it can run a standard windows program then you should be fine
They come from the second machine - I pipe the sound into an Astro Mixamp so that I have independent control of the volume of ATC versus the sim, but everything piped into my headset.
That's great to hear - glad I could help.
So if I were to run REX on a separate PC, I would have to put (after checking that it is able to be networked) a SimConnect.cfg file in the main REX directory and follow the steps you mentioned for to properly set up SimConnect? Also, would hardwiring 2 PC's together help speed up the process a bit?
Ugh sorry to hear that. In general this technique works for things injected into fsx or that extract from it, so flight planners, flight monitors, atc, weather, some traffic (not all), ACARS and so on. Integral parts of the sim, like an aircraft, won't.
Hey froogle, i guess you already knew this, but Simconnect works also great with Prepar3D v 2.2!
Thanks so much for all your videos which I have followed for a while now. I have finally decided to upgrade my machine to one that will run FSX quite easily. I am debating whether to network my old machine to run ancillaries or whether to sell it and buy some more software considering FSX will be running on a powerful machine. What are your thoughts? The specs of the new machine are similar to yours only real differences are a GTX 970 and a i7 4790k (not overclocked).
Thanks and keep up the great work
thanks that really helped gettng ASN running for me via network
Great video Froogle ,certainly helped me out today ,all up an running now sweet..out of interest do you still fly for BAV?
After folowing these GREAT instuctions, my only question is, will my addon sceneries on my main sim computer show up on my extra monitors on my 2nd computer? Or do I need to install the sceneries on both(is that even possible)??
Amazing Video. Thank you very much. You explained it very well
Hey Froogle,
thanks for your great Videos!! You awesome! What are the system requirements for the second machine?
Thanks for your answer.
You are a walking FSX now it all encyclopedia. Thanks a lot. You already helped me so much i should get your name tattooed on my arm ;)
good on ya mate, you some how made that entertaining at the same time.
Froogle, I followed all the steps you talked about and I am able to connect my client to my main machine and FSX. Added all the necessary file xml, ini, and cfg, sim connect, etc files. I have few add-ons that I currently run with FSX on FSX machine such as (FTX, REX Essential plus, GSX, traffic x), do I need to remove all those from FSX pc and install on client machine?
Do you have a video on SimConnect setup for ASN for network---running ASN on client PC?
Another great video Pete, Thank you for putting it together despite your disdain..
Forgive me please if this is a given or not, but is it possible to network two or more computers using different OS's.. My Mothership is Win7, while my No.2 is XP.. Is all this possible using XP..?
Awesome work mate, thanks!
Thank you for your reply. But it seems I can't access anything I shared because I dont have permission. Anyways, I'll figure it out soon. Happy flights!
Froogle, Sorry about autocorrect on IPAD, lol. Anyway re installing FSUIPC and SimConnect started working.
Z: as shown in the video when I mount the drive.
Hi froogle, first thank you for this it worked fine of course ! But i'm just wondering what AI Traffic add-on you use (And sorry if you talked about it in your other video but just couldn't find it) because I was gonna use My Traffic X but then I discovered that is not injected via FSUIPC so not gonna work. So i'm guessing that you use UTX but its just a guess !
Sorry, I found it, thanks again.
I had to go through my network drive than same path as it tells you.
Thanks anyways it great !
Hey froogle great video, while on the theme of computer in your opinion what would you recommend a system to run these programs (fsx with the add-ons, active sky, etc)
One word...Brilliant!!
Dude if your ever in the Vancouver BC area I owe you a beer for saving me the time of setting up my 2 PC's
So SimConnect works for you from this video? I tried everything and nothing works. I have Active Sky Next and their instructions are not working at all... please let me know if you can help...
I am using the same setup as he is with Active sky next and pfpx. I installed the SDK package from disk 1 of the gold dsk. Installed all the service packs as instructed. Setup simconnect client on both server and laptop. There are 3 versions. You also need to make sure your simconnect.ini file is setup correctly with your server ip as well as port number. Also I disabled my windows firewall on both machines which also may make a difference
Shane B Well, I have done everything except for installing Simconnect on the Server... I thought Simconnect only belonged on the Client machine... also, the ini file is just for the console and doesn't even need the IP address... So if I understand you correctly, then I'm missing a few steps and so is HiFi Technologies because they haven't mentioned any of the above mentioned... but I will try that next and let you know... meanwhile, If I'm interpreting you wrongly, please let me know...
I would Install simconnect on both client and server and make sure the versions match
great Video Froogle, I have just one question which may seem obvious to some but here goes.
The addon software that you run must obviously be installed on you secondary computer but do you setup simconnect ect before installing them or after or does it make no difference ?
dcmol83 It doesn't matter really in terms of order, just so long as you have all the pre-requisites in place the first time you run everything to try and connect.
Since Christmas is coming up any must have FSX addons for the new year?
Also thoughts on the upcoming quality wings 787?
If you're using radar contact on a separate computer, from which one are coming the atc voices? I guess not from the machine where fsx is installed..am I wrong?
thanks for the video one question do how can i find out witch conection the addon uses, as said some hav custum code some use simconnect how do i know witch one they use?
Excellent Video!!!
Froogle - and there have been at least two videos uploaded since your comment ;)
Where should I install the add-on programs that I would like to run on my 2nd computer? say for example active sky... should I install it on both computers or only on the 2nd computer?
Thank you for this very useful video
Froglets, I followed your video to the letter, multiple times, and I still had problems. Did lots of FP003094062 on the Internet and conversed with Active Sky. The people at Active Sky said to read there documentation and there was one line in there that helped me. Their documentation said after you I stall SimConnect, reinstall FSUIPC and your SimConnect will be setup properly. Well I did that and Active Sky and Pro-Atc started working through SimConnect. Hope this helps somebody else h
Hi froogle, I just had a few questions
1) Do I have to have FSX installed on the second PC because I cannot install WideFS without it.
2) Is AivlaSoft EFB compulsory?
Thanks, I did manage to get the network setup.
Thankyou froogle!
Have you tried your MacBookPro running Win7-64K on a VM as your second PC? ( and networking it with your desktop where you run FSX?) similarly as you show here?
I only use the Windows PC as a desktop for FSX. For pretty much everything else I only use the Mac. Thanks.
Thnx froogle
1 quick question wil it work for SqwuakBox? since you are alos flying online on VATSIM
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!! LIKE
Hi everybody.
Tnx a lot Froogle for this outstanding video!
Does anyone know if the Flight Passengers X is able to run on a multiple PC configuration, lets say on the slave machine?
Many thanks in advance.
Great to know. Thanks
Hi there, I did not understand something. If I installed the Simconnect solution I do not need the other stuff right?
Thanks for the upload!
I've tried this and I'm not sure whether or not to put the location as the Z drive or through the network tab. Does you directory look like Z:\Program Files (x86)\ etc.... or does it look like \\PCNAME\c\c\Program Files (x86)\etc ...?
Bit of a silly question, but better to ask I suppose, my FSX rig is windows 7 64-bit, but my "work/study" laptop so to speak is windows 7 32-bit. Would that be an issue at all, or as long as everything is networked properly as per your video etc it's all go go TO/GA? (See what i did there haha).
Again, thanks for you videos froogle and keep up the good work.
You should be fine
Froogle for Aivlasoft EFB you don´t need to use nothing? (FSUIPC, SIMCONNECT, COSTUM CODE)
This is awesome ! I did every step you give in this tutorial and everything works. I really appreciate your input to help others. One question though, my active sky 2012 on my laptop is connecting to my FS on my main, and it cant find the path for app data folders. Can you give me any tips?
Thanks a lot ! Tiger7881
The second computer can be a netbook or there must be a potent computer?
(Sorry for my english)
I find your channel very helpful. Just subscribed earlier today. I am an extreme novice but would like to build a sim system for my daughter while she starts flight lessons. With the intent of the sim to help her become licensed/proficiently with a minimum of hrs in the real plane. I would like to set up a three monitor/screen window view, with a one or two screen cockpit/controls view. I have a number of computers. Can one set up multiple computers to run these screens even if I plan to only use the FSX gold edition without add on's? If so how do you get the slave cpu to handle the window views? (I added and installed the updates and msi's you mentioned in this vid) they show up in the slave program list., do I start fsx on the slave via the "X" mapped drive? how do I start the slave to do anything?)
There are various solutions to this, none of which I have used I am afraid. I'm very sorry but I think you're going to get the best answer to this by posting on one of the large support forums like avsim or flightsim.com
There is a "background radiation" of dislikes. On UA-cam it is about 1:1000 or slightly higher, depending on the type of video. Reasons for dislikes that have nothing to do with "disliking" a video in the traditional sense: someone gets suggested a video but the suggestion is wrong (for them); clicking dislike accidentally; bots and so on.
So only I have to install it in my notebook (second pc) and it synchronise with FSX?
In my case, Wifi. A wired Ethernet local network would also work.
