I have the same issue you discussed about the tension knob with my Lexa 300, I find the harder I try to swing my bait, the easier I get backlash. If you lock down the tension knob, once that bait hits the water, you can just release the tension knob to allow it to fall in the water. It is inconvenient at times but helps keep the bait in the strike zone.

Have you tried adjusting the extrenal brakes on the opposite of handle side plate or the interior set of the same side plate?

I have not messed with the interior brakes. That might be my issue with not having it dialed properly
