The opening of this song was filmed at my grandma's house in austin indiana. The scene with the black gentleman sitting on the porch, he was sitting in her rocking chair. My grandmother never learned how to read and if you notice the bible in the window is upside down. I65 was built right through town in the 50's and literally cut the road her house is on in half. My grandma passed away on jan 1st 2019 at the age of 90. Oh how i miss the 1980's. They are great memories.

Mellencamp talks about how he saw a Black man sitting on that porch and how the highway running through it was the inspiration for the song. He had a black cat on his lap and he waved back at Mellencamp and that was how he ended up writing that song. I wonder, was the gentleman in the video the same man? But in any event, that highway cut through the Black part of town just like so many of our highways did, and a lot of people don't understand what that means. It means that we didn't care about disrupting the Black neighborhoods. It meant that some of us were even happy to do it. We need to reckon with this. This music is "heartland music" and that includes our Black heartland residents. I can't help noticing how many of the commenters identify themselves as Black, which is likely because the average white listener of this music is probably clueless as to who is a resident of the heartland. Then they tell us they like this song too, or they love this artist too. I hope everyone who reads that thinks about it. "Flyover Country" and "Real America" isn't just the white people like me.

I grew up on F highway in Missouri for awhile in a little pink 2 room house as a child. I slept in the bottom drawer of a dresser in my parents room. My two older brothers slept in the living/ kitchen area on a fold out love seat. We had no running water and a outhouse. And I thought life was glorious. When I got a little older and we moved back to Illinois. We moved to a house that was rented to us by a very generous Mexican family and I got promoted to sleeping on a shelf in the closet. Life was good in the 70's. We were dirt poor and I was happy. One year for Christmas I got an orange, teddy bear, hoolahoop and one knew outfit. I was so gracious and happy. When I look back through the family photo albums everyone was happy. People were real and spent quality time together. I remember the first time I ate a prime cut of beef. I was 11 years old my grandfather bought me that steak. People today are not appriative of the blessings they have.

100% agreed... John Mellencamp _IS_ Classic American Rock. Tom Petty, Felix Cavaliere, Bob Grill, Woodie Gutherie, Tom Johnston, John Fogerty, Paul Simon, Jim Croche & Billy Joel (in no particular order) are a small handful that defined classic guitar rock & have made the everlasting impression on all of us. Esp those of who, thanks to them, grew up wanting to be guitarists & eventually became them. Their music is the gift that keeps right on giving, everyday. And no doubt strongly influenced us to be better people 💜❤

Guys you mentioned are not the most important for the developement of rock music. Woody Guthrie, Paul Simon and Billy Joel have very, very little to do with rock. Classic rock music was defined by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Mickey Baker, Johnny Burnette with Paul Burlison, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Sonics, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After, The Allman Brothers.

@@piotrb8434 You have a much stricter view of what Rock 'n Roll is than I do. My opinion of what popular music qualifies to be called Rock isn't restricted to textbook definition. And my viewpoint isn't unique since Rock is a large umbrella that covers many flavors & styles outside of "guitar rock," pleonasm & all
There are hundreds of thousands like me who experienced Pop & differing flavors of R&R firsthand, throughout the 60's, 70s, & 80s, with it's many alterations & changes. We were there! We understand that the range of "Rock" sub-catagories are not restricted only to popular music that uses electric guitar. Whether Jazz or Big Band styles that emphasize the use of brasswinds; Rock-fusion where an all-acoustic orchestra is simply accompanied by a handful of Rock instruments; & Soft Rock that uses a more sophisticated blend of rhythum & melody than these
There are Rock songs that range from being dominated by use of electric guitar(s), through to merely using a single rhythum guitar, faintly in the background. And there are so-called "Rock" songs where the lead instrument is a piano & little if any guitar accompanies it (Elton John, Ferranté & Tiecher, Dr John, John Anderson, Todd Rundgren, 10CC, Pablo Cruise) but such music is still referred to as "Rock" of some flavor
Again, at the risk of offending your formally-trained view in the matter, my opinion of what is called "Rock" & what goes by another name isn't based upon the rigid definitions of a professor who wrote a textbook on 20th Century Music. My opinion is based on 40+ years of listening to ths
e broad spectrum of American radio; some of it mainstream, but much of it not
So, I can see that we won't see eye-to-eye, & I won't waste your time arguing about it. Please allow me to bid you sincere thanks for contributing your thoughts today, nevertheless✌💜

He's always been a huge ahole in reality though, so anyone who knows or met him probably has quite a few reasons for not loving this man. Also, his music is hugely overrated, he has like 2.5 decent songs and the rest are filler trash. Nostalgia is a hell of a drig though, helps with willfully ignoring the facts that don't agree with the rest of the story.

@zwalters4135 Mellencamp is so bipolar between speaking with hyperbole and with basics. He's even stated that the song is a critique of the American Dream, and questioning if it's actually a singular and concrete thing. No 2 "Pink Houses" are the same, and no 2 peoplehave the same 'American Dream'.

I would like to tell you about my youngest brother who is Latino ♥️ Latinx. He is so loving and kind to everyone always he has never ever ever said an unkind word to me ever not even one time and I believe in my heart that he's never ever ever ever said an unkind word to anyone ever in his entire life. He is an amazing humanitarian. ♥️
(What I wrote is long it may take you a full minute to read - I believe it is well worth reading an extra few moments to hear about my little brother, Matt or Matty♥️Bear as I so affectionately call him. He was adopted from Columbia, South America. He was found just a couple hours old in a shoebox swaddled in newspapers on a busy street corner by a kind policeman that took him to an orphanage. He was born with a birth defect known as a cleft lip and palate so that is why I believe his mother who I believe wanted to keep him more than anything made this agonizing, heart-wrenching decision that she made. I also believe that she stood watch close by to make sure that he was safe and was found by someone who could bring him some more so he could get nourishment and cared for. We adopted him when he was 8 and 1/2 months old. OMG my heart's smile and lit up more than anything when I laid eyes upon him that first time when my daddy got off the plane my daddy flew down to Columbia, South America. My family is from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA.
      ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
It's hard for babies with a cleft lip and palette to be able to even drink milk with the cleft lip and palate. I think maybe 1% of the children that need surgery for it actually get it in that poor beautiful country. ♥️
      ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
At the orphanage, the nuns always smiled upon him because he was always full of smiles and had those beautiful eyes with long eyelashes. He also had beautiful curls in his hair. Such a beautiful baby! 😊♥️🦋
I believe God sent him as a beautiful gift to our family. Where he was born there was and still is extreme poverty with many people living in cardboard shacks.
      ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

There's you, & there are those of us who understood from Day One what John is saying about an imperfect system & an imperfect People living in this Land. We've been listening ever since Pink Houses & Jack & Diane first hit radio & MTV in 1983, when we were children. The message has always been unmistakable & crystal-clear, ever since. And we're STILL listening...
The only other singer-songwriters who come to my mind who are this honest, THIS earth-shatteringly profound are Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croche, Tom Johnston, Tom Petty, & Woody Gutherie

The winner actually won a pink house somewhere in the mid-west and John Cougar and his band played the backyard party to christen the new house! Haha..what a memory.

Most people argue that this is actually an anti-American song. In a way it is, but it mostly isn't. John comes from the heartland of America, I think he's proud to be American but what this video shows is that America is not perfect, when they show the drug dealer, the trash on the train tracks, one can pick up many negative signs. BUT the Buffalo, the horse riders etc are positive aspects of America so I still see this as a patriotic song and love posting it to Facebook on July 4th.

Lola Flores did you hear how bad they slandered him for not paying taxes the first ten years of his career. He didn't know anything about paying taxes but who does just starting out in life. What rhetoric. They absolutely slandered Bruce springsteen for his song about Vietnam. I personally think it is one of his best sings along with glory days. People hear what they want to hear. They have no clue. Getting back to a cold beer and good music have a great day.

    LYRICS:
There's a black man with a black cat
    Living in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate running' through his front yard
You know, he thinks, he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen cleaning' up evening slop
And he looks at her and says:
"Hey darling, I can remember when you could stop a clock"
Oh but ain't that America, for you and me
Ain't that America, we're something to see baby
Ain't that America, home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses for you and me, oh for you and me
    Well there's a young man in a T-shirt
Listenin' to a rock 'n' roll station
He's got a greasy hair, greasy smile
He says: "Lord, this must be my destination"
'Cause they told me, when I was younger
Sayin' "Boy, you're gonna be president"
But just like everything else, those old crazy dreams
    Just kinda came and went
Oh but ain't that America, for you and me
Ain't that America, we're something to see baby
Ain't that America, home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses, for you and me, oh baby for you and me
Well there's people and more people
What do they know, know, know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
    Ooo yeah
And there's winners, and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man baby pays the thrills,
The bills and the pills that kill
Oh but ain't that America, for you and me
Ain't that America, we're something to see baby
Ain't that America, home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses for you and me, ooo, ooo yeah
Ain't that America, for you and me
Ain't that America, hey we're something to see baby

This could also be Australia but with a few different lyrics. But then it could be anywhere in the western world too. America is in decline and this song talks of that decline. We are not in decline but are still on the up. Hello from 2018 :)

Takes me back to better times, we didn't have much when I was growing up and times were tough. But I wouldn't change one thing, with music like this we didn't need anything else. Money can't buy what we had in our hearts
