65 yr. old man grew up in Evansville, Ind. been in AZ. since 84, had to find work back then! my family my life my memories, born in a small town, I can breath in a small town! When I think of John and his songs I think of my home. Thank you.
I am also 65 and grew up in Evansville, graduated Reitz HS in '77. I'm still in Indiana, just outside of Bloomington. Grew up listening to Mellencamp, still remember when "I need a Lover" first hit the airwaves. Great times.
Thank God for Mellencamp for having the balls to make a video like this in 1987. The world is a better place for songs like this and an artist like this. Amazing.
I was arrested for Marijuana for the first time back in 1987.. those were good times.. I went to court and beat the case on a technicality.. walked out of court.. got into my car a free man.. and this song was playing on the radio.. and I have been jamming this song ever since!
Mellancamp is the soundtrack to my youth. I just love that dude. Thank you for being a poet. The Black community truly loves John. He was reaching out to us when it wasn't fashionable. Trying to bring everyone together.
Much respect for John Mellancamp, In my youth he was teaching me not to be like the people that surrounded me. I regret that there was a time that I did not treat my brothers and sisters like equals, but I am so glad I am better than that now.
As a Nigerian, I kept wondering myself as years went by why I was so addicted to John Cougar Mellencamp's music. Can't precisely say why. But I love his style, his simple down-to-earth lyrics. They wash me over with sweet nostalgia.

My Mama's too! She passed two years ago from cancer. I play this and I can hear her sing. Bless you and I'm so sorry, here's to our Mama's, may they dance together in heaven.
My favorite Mellancamp song ever! Makes you realize you need to enjoy the little things and make memories. Don't spend your life working. Enjoy life while you have it ❤

Don't matter what color you are a girl rock on I grew up on Marvin Gaye on cklw in Detroit on Motown music I'm a white boy from a small town in the country Marvin's great don't matter what color musics music it joins us all together down in the soul
I'm 73 living outside of Birmingham UK and this song makes me smile because of the girls I lost my mates came first !! Stupid !!!!!! But we had great times. It's great to have life love friends and memories. God Bless America Thanks John!!!!!
Such a beautiful song, a priceless era gone, past, never coming back. I look at today society and it just is so sad. For me, the 70s that I grew up in it was an amazing time in history. I looked back at the richness of that era today and I feel blessed to have those memories
His music reminds me of my dear friends I had growing up; going to local parties, places, laughing, doing silly things while adulthood stretched out before us. None of us knew these fun, simple times would make such warm memories. Young people are open-minded and inclusive; we watched our friends do their own thing, and loved them regardless and they, us.
My BFF and I would dance, oftentimes badly, whenever we heard this song. She died in 2009, but, to this day, I'll dance in her honour. RIP my sweet Bonita. ❤
A feel good song and I hope now that I’m 57 my kids will chill As they reach their 30’s and realize that pop Listened to music that was good for the soul and it allowed us to reflect on our years growing up... holding hands instead of having your hands held up because of you doing wrong. We settled things with our fist instead of a gun and we got over it. You went to a club to have fun and enjoy , not for drugs and looking for trouble. We listened to music that was good for the soul, not to motivate us to do wrong!!!!and left with a smile on our face!
Not only is his music timeless..I hear he's a real down to earth man..still living in his small town in Indiana..I believe..heard stories from friends on how he would go to the neighborhood McDonald's and just be in town..respect to him and the people who just let him live..I guess that's why Prince never left Minneapolis..I heard he did the same..to all my 80s babies..ROCK ON!!..real music sees no color..salute..
Well, I lived on the outskirts of town In an 8-room farmhouse, baby When my brothers and friends were around There was always somethin' doin' Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends Stopped by to see me every once in a while When I think back about those days All I can do is sit and smile That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young, and we were improvin' Laughin', laughin' with our friends Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby Outside the club Cherry Bomb Our hearts were really thumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah The winter days, they last forever But the weekends went by so quick Went ridin' around this little country town We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks One night, me with my big mouth A couple guys had to put me in my place When I see those guys these days We just laugh and say, "Do you remember when?" That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young, and we were improvin' Laughin', laughin' with our friends Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby Outside the club Cherry Bomb Our hearts were really thumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah All right Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah 17 has turned 35 I'm surprised that we're still livin' If we've done any wrong I hope that we're forgiven Got a few kids of my own And some days I still don't know what to do I hope that they're not laughin' too loud When they hear me talkin' like this to you That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young, and we were improvin' Laughin', laughin' with our friends Holdin' hands meant so much, baby Outside the club Cherry Bomb Our hearts were really thumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm 61 and still love his music. Your only as young as you feel. Don't you think. Tina I have 4 kids and 10 grandkids and 2 greatgrandkids. . And been married 27 and half years. But I still rock out with my babies. Teaching them what music is all about. And I love it.
Heard this song when I was a senior in high school and that line 17 has turned 35always stuck to me. I’m 50 now and yeah I’m still saying yeah yeah yeah
Same here.. I'm 58yrs and have grandchildren. When they get into my truck, they put on their own today's music and must say I just can't get into it. Maybe a few here and there but no.. As soon as they're gone I go back to my Classic Rock from the 70's. The best decade in music and will always listen to it.
Mellencamp's best album by far along with Scarecrow. I played this song at my wedding for all my 200 friends to dance to! AND WE DID.......SUPERB SONG JOHN.....THANK YOU PAL!!
*4:29* This was my grandfather, Daniel 'Danny' Linne, as a teen living in Indiana, a mutual friend of Mellencamp. In this snippet, he is seen living life and having fun. He was a cool grandpa, who had some quirks and made not so great choices in life, but to me, he was still the coolest. He had a devious sense of humor and loved to joke. Overall, we loved each other; we had a pretty decent relationship for him being my only grandfather. He passed away rather quickly, too soon. I love this video-this song will always remind me of him and how much each of us should value life for what it is. Also, in honor of Veteran's Day, Thank you for your service, Grampese! (TM 3 SS NAVY '63-67 Vietnam)
james hall Nice trolling attempt,James. 10/10. We both know war is too complex to blame soldiers for everything.Fortunately for you, I am educated, and quite secure in my love and respect for American soldiers. Have a lovely day.
james hall You're state of thinking is so elementary..I'm sorry, I simply cannot argue with someone incapable of reasoning and the realization that there are too many aspects to war that there was and never will be one to blame or one cause to pinpoint. Sorry.
james hall Also, say what you will, my grandfather was a valiant soldier and grandfather,so nothing you can do will change my opinion, and you will continue to make yourself and your information look unjustifiable and full of nonsense.
james hall I don't understand what a commonly known fact has to do with disrespecting my public dedication to someone I held close to my heart. You're making yourself look worse and worse,so I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish..
How this is not on the streaming music services is crazy!!! Wonderful song of coming of age. On, such great memories for a gentler time. Now that I am way past that age, I still love this song. The backup singers are great as are the lyrics; listen closely. So sweet. Turn it up!
Hadn't heard this song for a while, but that line often passes through my head. There's something so Christian about it: "Me with my big mouth. A couple guys had to put me in my place. When l see those guys these days . ." Beautiful lyrics. Stay humble. Love the Lord. Accept your penance. Reconcile.
This song I believe is John Mellencamp's greatest song. It has a power that moves me to dance and moves me to tears in equal spades. It really is one of the most gorgeous songs of the 80s from a wonderful artist who was so inclusive of all races back when it wasn't so hip
Art can touch people in powerful ways. This Artist and this song did that for me when I was a young Black kid living in small town America. It reaffirmed my desires and goals.
@John Mellencamp John cared enough to share his feelings on society way back in the 1980s, and that message really mattered to a lot of people but was especially powerful to the African American community. It was uplifting.
1987...I met my husband the year this song first came out. I loved it then, love it more now. Upbeat, nostalgic, I especially love the fiddle. The lyrics, music and the video are so perfectly matched. Never having seen the video until now, it's amazing how it's exactly what I envisioned when I first heard this song. "Dancin' meant everything...holdin' hands meant somethin' baby..."went ridin' around this little country town, we were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks". I grew up in a little country town, "in the sticks", so these lyrics resonate for me. I'm so thankful that I my childhood was in a "hick town" rather than "the city". Lots of open farmland, streams, fields, fresh air, horses, cows, chickens, clean, easy living. Every time I listen to this song, I end up with tears of joy, running down my cheeks, just like back in 1987. Thanks, JCM!
You're very lucky. I'm in my 70s,but my love &dance partner isn't in this world anymore- it's been 20 years-- I dance by myself and REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES! Thank heaven for musiç😊r

Whoever said “Classics never die” Cougar for sure! But also the man who introduced me to this music. Steven Smith he was a best friend for so many years, then I fell in love with this crazy man. He was a classic to he passed away September a couple years back. And I miss him daily I guess I listen to this when I want to remember the crazyness that I would not have had any other way. So this goes out to you Steven Smith “1969” with so much love from me and Crimpton who both miss you so much. I wish you were here beside me again!
I dated a girl for 4 years, lived in many different places together, each home we’d turn this on and dance around the house together. Even though we’re on different paths in life now, it’s one of my favourite memories, I’ll always love you B.
i'm listening to this on the year anniversary of my aunts sudden unexpected passing. i remember all the events i went to where she loved this song and dancing to it. i'll see her again but boy do the tears flow. i hear it on the radio at work, and in the car from time to time and think of her :)
Fond memories of my late best friend Marcy. Crazy I lost her at only 38. We always talked about being old together in the nursing home. Forever in my heart. Thank you John for music to help reflect and heal.
This is like one of my favorite music videos and John Mellencamp songs, his music is just amazing! It’s songs and times like those that you never want to leave...💜💎

My beautiful wife 50th Birthday today. This is our song and I lovingly have a turn with her on the dancefloor of our favorite Hometown bar tonight. Peace and love.....
i guess our generation will look back at the 80's the way our parents looked at the 50's & 60's in 2019 you start to realize that a simpler time was a better time
No you will just think it was. Just like the kids of today will look at the 2020's with nostalgia. It's the time when you were a kid regardless iof when it was and what was happening in the world at large.
oh sweet girl I wish I believed that. But I fear my grandchildren and all children of these times will look back at dreadful changes and unprecedented suffering globally . And I can’t think of any music today that is uplifting the youth -the kind of music that gives hope, common vision and unity of hearts . What music will they feel united them when young in 2021? Sorry to be such a downer, and bless you for such hopeful thoughts anyway! 🙏💞🌟☮️
@@francie2915 Don't start with me. People are nostalgic for the early 2000's, 9/11 notwithstanding. I don't think anyone would have though people would be nostalgic for three Great Depression either.
My brothers and sisters around the world seeing you reach out to each other has brought tears to my eyes.oh how wonderful our world could be if every human being could feel the way you feel.
Gets me too Joeann. I just turned 49 two days ago and this song just took me back to that awkward and skinny kid that couldn't seem to do anything right, unless it was on the banks of the river somewhere. Ahhh, there he was at peace and there is where he found himself and there, on those muddy banks, is where he would learn about love and life and how precious and sometimes painful they are. He would eventually find himself many miles away from this beautiful and sacred place but every two or three years he returns and breathes in those old memories and it is this song playing on an old radio somewhere in the background as he tells his young son of the adventures he and this old muddy river shared together when he was a boy. Life is good.
Love his home-movie style videos. Growing up in America was wonderful, great memories, didn't realize how good we had it. People were much more in tune with each other and had more in common. Kinder too. I miss that. Think I appreciate it more now that 17 has turned 35 : )
17 turns 51 dam i miss the days of my Youth setting joking with MY friends and listening for Cougar on the weekly countdown with Dick Clark Thinking about goin out the Lane to have a little fun. Thanks for the memories John!!!

Love it! Love all music! It is the thread that keeps us human and humble.
Me-2!! How cool is that?!😎🎤🎶🎶🎶👍👏👏👏👏💓
I'm 73 living outside of Birmingham UK and this song makes me smile because of the girls I lost my mates came first !!
Stupid !!!!!!
But we had great times.
It's great to have life love friends and memories.
God Bless America
Thanks John!!!!!
Love John's music. Brings back great memories. Dancing and singing with my young sons. Today I still dance and sing with my grandchildren.
Such a beautiful song, a priceless era gone, past, never coming back. I look at today society and it just is so sad. For me, the 70s that I grew up in it was an amazing time in history. I looked back at the richness of that era today and I feel blessed to have those memories
I'm well, although it's 1:44 a.m. in the morning because I can't sleep so this is what I do I listen to music
The 70's were the best. 🎶🎸
I understand that, children today don't have a clue how to live
His music reminds me of my dear friends I had growing up; going to local parties, places, laughing, doing silly things while adulthood stretched out before us.
None of us knew these fun, simple times would make such warm memories. Young people are open-minded and inclusive; we watched our friends do their own thing, and loved them regardless and they, us.
Me too!! 💘
My BFF and I would dance, oftentimes badly, whenever we heard this song.
She died in 2009, but, to this day, I'll dance in her honour.
RIP my sweet Bonita. ❤
RIP Bonita! Remember you WILL see each other again one day my friend!!! Love from Tennessee
That's what I'm doing now. My love passed away,Jan3 2024. We danced all the time and we cooked and danced. My only true love.😢
You'll dance with her again 😊
Say yeah! Greetings from Brazil!🇧🇷
Anything by John Mellencamp is GREAT! Cherry Bomb is my favorite.

A feel good song and I hope now that I’m 57 my kids will chill
As they reach their 30’s and realize that pop
Listened to music that was good for the soul and it allowed us to reflect on our years growing up... holding hands instead of having your hands held up because of you doing wrong. We settled things with our fist instead of a gun and we got over it. You went to a club to have fun and enjoy , not for drugs and looking for trouble. We listened to music that was good for the soul, not to motivate us to do wrong!!!!and left with a smile on our face!

So true, great comment. ❤️💃
AMEN-WELL SAID.CHEERS FROM 🇨🇦
I've been listening to Mellencamp for over 40 years. I'll keep listening until the end of my life. I love him and his awesome music.
Saw him play at the Bluebird, Bloomington, back in the day…before he got famous. Good times! 2:34
Jesus , I love this guy....makes me feel 20 again....thanx John !!!
Yep. From Muncie Indiana. Same place Bob Ross painted happy things
seriously? sees no color? its literally marketed based on age and race onto radio stations that do the same
@@parkjamesshaw3189 Seymour, Indiana. He lives in Bloomington now.
@@joeruiz4010 I stand corrected
Well, I lived on the outskirts of town
In an 8-room farmhouse, baby
When my brothers and friends were around
There was always somethin' doin'
Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends
Stopped by to see me every once in a while
When I think back about those days
All I can do is sit and smile
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young, and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby
Outside the club Cherry Bomb
Our hearts were really thumpin'
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
The winter days, they last forever
But the weekends went by so quick
Went ridin' around this little country town
We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks
One night, me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say, "Do you remember when?"
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young, and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby
Outside the club Cherry Bomb
Our hearts were really thumpin'
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
All right
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
17 has turned 35
I'm surprised that we're still livin'
If we've done any wrong
I hope that we're forgiven
Got a few kids of my own
And some days I still don't know what to do
I hope that they're not laughin' too loud
When they hear me talkin' like this to you
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young, and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant so much, baby
Outside the club Cherry Bomb
Our hearts were really thumpin'
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
Say yeah, yeah, yeah
A great 1987 song, great backing and instrumental in the background, all fits into place with his singing! 🎉😊❤
As I grow older I appreciate this song and video more. Life keeps rolling
Seventeen has turned 63, got a few grandkids of my own and I still don't know what to do. Still rockin' out to this music !!!!
I'm 11 about to be 12 and I love this song!
Tina Dalton alright!!! Very Cool & You R Not Alone!
Those 80's albums still sound great. John's body of work is truly outstanding.
Always amazes me how ridiculously good Mellencamp’s songs are. Geez
Ginger Devlin Um...what?
james hall Nice trolling attempt,James.
Woke up at 4:30am with this song in my head. Don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve listened to it. Still good after all these years
Every day i wake up, i wake to a different song in my head. Never fails.
This... is my favorite all time songs!! Hope to see you in Spokane,WA Aug 8 this year!!❤
How this is not on the streaming music services is crazy!!! Wonderful song of coming of age. On, such great memories for a gentler time. Now that I am way past that age, I still love this song. The backup singers are great as are the lyrics; listen closely. So sweet. Turn it up!
One of the most important musical artists of our time and he doesn't receive enough recognition.
My friend went to school with him 😊
This is THE best mellencamp song in my opinion -brings tears every time I hear it.I grew up in the 80s not the 50s, but I TOTALLY get it; THANKS JOHN!
Hadn't heard this song for a while, but that line often passes through my head. There's something so Christian about it:
"Me with my big mouth. A couple guys had to put me in my place. When l see those guys these days . ."
Beautiful lyrics. Stay humble. Love the Lord. Accept your penance. Reconcile.
Great song. Feel good music. Never get tired of John Mellancamp music. A song for the ages!
These 80's songs will last forever
This is a great great song. 70 years old now. May God bless him with many more years to grace us with his talent.
John is Indiana thru and thru, nostalgic tunes still brings tears to my eyes
I've never been to Indiana but all the people I've met from there are good solid hard working people
ddr
Is he though? His political views don't align with most Indianans, and I mean that as a compliment to John.
@@philliesfan1971 he's Indiana as fuck, all politics aside.
@@philliesfan1971 What's an Indianan? We're Hoosiers!
1986, single, and the girls loved to dance to this tune. I HAD HAIR !!! Now in 2024, in my 70s and married to a wonderful lady that danced with me.
You're very lucky. I'm in my 70s,but my love &dance partner isn't in this world anymore- it's been 20 years-- I dance by myself and REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES! Thank heaven for musiç😊r
17 has turned 58!!! Oh how I have always loved this song!! I love all his music but this song just hits my heart. There are many who don't realize what a great artist this man is. Thank you John for all the personal songs of your small town!!
This is my moms favorite song n will always remind me of her. 💜

What a grown-up way to tell us how much you care for the lady that was once a part of life. Good on you, my friend.
Those were the days, real rock and roll, thanks Mr Mellencamp
i'm listening to this on the year anniversary of my aunts sudden unexpected passing. i remember all the events i went to where she loved this song and dancing to it. i'll see her again but boy do the tears flow. i hear it on the radio at work, and in the car from time to time and think of her :)
I adore John, always have. I have lived The Authority Song me entire life, but this is my favourite among so many favourites. He is an artist worthy of RESPECT and ADMIRATION.
LOVE THIS SONG, and the old home 8mm movie clips mixed in is a trip down memory lane. Rock On, JM !!
John in concert...saw both concerts last Fri and Sat. May '23. Makes this ol' girl smile feel 20 again.
I mean how can you not like this song
I grew up on this track in my teens in the late eighties .i am almost 50! still grooving to CHERRY BOMB! Love this track to the moon & back.
....and then some.
Classic 80s song. Makes you reminisce about when times were good. Long live the 80s. 😎🤘
I'd be honored if some Cougar Mellencamp & 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of JACK & DIANE and SOMEBODY'S BABY by Jackson Browne on my YT channel (tap on my photo go there) in tribute to the great musical summer of 1982. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital enhancements. Thanks and keep on rocking.

You are Blessed. ❤️❤️
It's a great gift to be able to write lyrics that so many people can relate to. Even after all these years. Great song. Brings back great memories.
This song makes me happy no matter what I'm going thru as soon as I play it
Hello Holly
Always love listening to John's music. Brings so many memories back. 35 turns to 63, still have the friends from high school. Great poetry!!💜💜🤩
i guess our generation will look back at the 80's the way our parents looked at the 50's & 60's in 2019 you start to realize that a simpler time was a better time
Some video clip pieces here looked to me like the '50s & '60s of which I could relate.
Hell, we’re starting to look at the 90’s under the same lens
"17 has turned 35.."that line gets me everytime.Classic song.
Life is good.
yes joeann I know the felling I just turned 59 good Lord willing I had a heart attack 26 days before my 59th .
17 has turned 42
Yes and now, it is "35 has turned 65" His birthday was yesterday. Happy birthday @John Mellencamp.
Best line ever!
Awesome song! Nothing better than John Cougar Mellencamp's 80s music!!
Love his home-movie style videos. Growing up in America was wonderful, great memories, didn't realize how good we had it. People were much more in tune with each other and had more in common. Kinder too. I miss that.
Think I appreciate it more now that 17 has turned 35 : )
17 turns 51 dam i miss the days of my Youth setting joking with MY friends and listening for Cougar on the weekly countdown with Dick Clark
Thinking about goin out the Lane to have a little fun.
Thanks for the memories John!!!

One of my most favorite all time songs. I love this song. Brings many memories. Thank you JMC
Nobody had the pulse of middle America in their music like John! Everytime I hear one of his song's, I think of growing up on my grandparents farm.
