I went to a Gong Show taping in 1978. They made 5 shows in a row (after 3 you had the option to leave, more people were waiting outside). I sat in the front row and Chuck walked over, I shook his hand, then found out he came to see his daughter who was sitting next to me. Also shook hands with Gene Gene. Anyway, I always thought Chuck got the idea for his shows from the first reality show I can remember - Candid Camera that first aired in 1948! It starred regular people, and, like Gong, they often looked like fools, but the participants wanted to be on it. Well done, Chuck!

during one of my lowest points of life, I watched the Gong show. It sounds crazy to say this, but, the humor, and antics were my high point of the day. Just out of a romantic love break up, working a horrible night job with no future, and a list of other life-crushing events I knew 3:00 each afternoon I would have a little joy out of life. Thank God my life changed to success, and joy, but so wish I could have spoken to Chuck in those dark days of his about the gong show. "Chuck, you may have saved my life" May you RIP.

Chuck Barris was my father's first cousin. He always had me call him "Uncle Chuck". When he became successful, he lost any time for his family, and I remember Chuck's mother half-joking to me that she had to go through three secretaries to make an appointment to get her son on the phone, and he had the secretary tell her "tell my mother I have 10 minutes for her on the phone, and not a minute more". My father used to take me Saturday mornings to Chuck's house on a cliff in Malibu, and he was very nice and welcoming, as he was usually just alone there.

Chuck, had you but known. Many of us, millions of us, if a son called critic doesn't like something ? That usually means that their over inflated egos were and are WRONG. You are a genius. And millions of us loved your shows, style, and irreverence.

I LOVED Gene Gene the Dancing Machine, he was AWESOME, loved it when he'd come out to the Count Basie song Jumpin' at the Woodside, that was the PERFECT song for Gene Gene

Kevin Rose: I recall that later in the show's run, the gimmick became DISCO GENE, THE DANCING MACHINE. Gene, and THE UNKNOWN COMIC, were my favorite 'regular' acts! What a crazy show! Great memories from my teenage years! Thanks for the laughs, Chucky Baby! Rest in peace, Sir.

42:36 His final quote in this was prophetic. He sought a respectable epitaph when he was already an Icon. A beacon. Everybody has to make sausage, but his fed millions from coast to coast. Every day.
Insecurity creates wonderful content at the expense of the contributor. (Sorry, had to get deep there...)

Chuck Barris was a complete genius, but he's crazy, you could never imagined. One of my favorite Chuck Barris game shows is gonna be The Gong Show, it was the original American Idol. The second is Treasure Hunt which was pure genius, the original Dond, third is The 1.98 Beauty Show which is the same as The Gong Show. if you watch television shows today they can trace back to Chuck Barris, he was a pure genius.
