    That housing you made for the stick steer is really clever. I would have never thought of that.

    Wow! I never knew such a steering lever existed! I have a Mercury 25 with no tiller, which is set up for cable controls, that I was wishing I could use on my 14' aluminum boat (with no console). You have given me ideas for how I might be able to use the nice, electric start Merc on this boat. You have a great shop to work in and the skills to go with it!

    Fantastic presentation. I'm considering buying a Smoker Craft 17 footer, and this mod or to a steering wheel would be one I might want to do. For your setup, I wonder if the motor rotation can be set loose enough for you to shorten the stick? It would make your throw a little shorter - if you like.

    Benny, youv'e done it again! New subject means more interested people. I buy, repair, and sell outboard motors as a hobby. Nothing larger than 25 hp. You have made a fine choice in that Johnson 15 hp. The silver grey paint is known to peel easily but that's only cosmetic. That motor will run circles around the previous Johnson low profile 15. Only weak point I have found in those motors is the carburetor. The plastic warps and makes the motor run poorly. Be sure to set the bottom of the cavitation plate even with the bottom of the boat. Don't set it lower unless cavitation becomes a problem. You will get peak performance that way. I don't think there are many cupped props available for those motors but they reduce cavitation and give a little more speed. Try to get a tachometer reading at wide open throttle because that tinny is so light over reving the motor could ruin it. This will be fun too watch. I have to go work, err play, with a 25 hp motor now. Dave

      I knew I would hook you on this project, lol! Thanks for all the advise I will look into all of that. I was also concerned about the rpm, I know the prop has to match the boat on bigger boats, we will see.

      Hey there I've got a 25 horse Johnson (1978) I've been restoring. It's an electric start. Any thoughts on that one? Any words of wisdom for attaching the lower unit to the gear case? I bought it as a project in pieces so this has been a new experience putting it all back together. I'm still trying to figure out if this motor will work on the hull that I've got. It will have about 17 inches of the lower unit in the water below the transom. Long shaft I'm guessing. Not sure what the sweet spot is for getting in and out of skinny water while not sacrificing power. Just thought I'd ask. TIA.

    That steering is what is called a suicide stick. Skeeter made a small bass boats years back called the Hawk. Stick steer port, throttle stick starboard. Piloted it from a center post seat way up front. Good luck and be safe.

    where did you get the threaded pipe from?? I am looking to do the same thing with my 2000 evinrude 15 hp and 14' lowe. the easy stick is over 400 bucks new, you can get hydraulic helm systems for that much, why go with this?

      @@kentuckyyankee slick! You could also fab a adjustable knuckle on the steering shaft so you wouldn’t have to reach as far back to turn motor to left or boat to right. Cut and thread both ends of the steering rod. Tap a piece of stock on both ends and bend it in middle 10-30degrees or whatever. You might also want to put a set screw in both threads once you get it fine adjusted.

      @@kentuckyyankee My boat is Pond Prowler 8 ft. It steers like a troling motor mounted on an inner tube. That's not much exaggeration. 😊
      I helped that a little by changing the 30 lb thrust bow mounted Min Kota 5 speed control to a PWM speed controller. I haven't tried the troller stern mounted. That might be better.
      I'm thinking of using your style steering to put a rudder on the stern.

    Your controls are backwards!

  • @rpetersen2
    @rpetersen2 Рік тому +1

    Your steering is backward,... because of the lever being on the incorrect side. That brand is specified as port side lever arm actuated only. So even though your setup "works". You should be pushing forward for right steering and pulling back for left as it's intuitive. Your setup will steer the opposite of that, making it naturally counter-intuitive just as an FYI unless you reverse the lever and mount it port side, or reverse the internal gearing in the actuator lever unit, itself. That said, it's a great idea in theory,... and works as long as that counter-intuitive steering doesn't cause you to wreck if in a stressful situation and you instinctually steer the normal way.
