I did this a couple months ago and I’m never going back. I got a used iPad mini 6 cellular on EBay and threw it on a magnetic vent mount from Amazon. I connect it to my hotspot on low data mode and it works seamlessly. The screen size is a big upgrade since I used the iPhone 13 mini.
I did this too. I went a step further and pulled my old stereo out and installed this bluetooth amp "BOSS Audio Systems MC900B Amplifier". It's hidden behind the dash, and except for the little controller for the amp, it looks like I don't have a stereo at all when I'm parked. It connects to my ipad immediately when I start the truck which the old stereo didn't. I'm super stoked with this setup.
But bluetooth connection causes a delay for my case. Either playing a song or watching video, whenever i select play, the vids would play but the sound is delayed like 3 sec
Is there a way by having a usb c to composite or anything and then directly connect to the system? So that you can still able to take advantage of ipad’s big screen for map and media consumption while still enjoy my car sound system ? Hmm
Cool video! I'm definitely toying with the idea of doing something like this with an iPad Mini on a classic car. Regarding the text messages thing, I'm sure you can figure out an automation through Shortcuts to read it out loud. My main issue is definitely the charging, gonna need some very neat cable management to make it clean and "OEM+" looking.
I also failed to realize that the WiFi only iPad didn’t have GPS. I bought a Garmin glo 2 as an external GPS and it seems to work better. Definitely not as accurate as my phone though
With the garmin glo, was it any good? Also how does the glo 2 connect to the ioad especially because I’m using my ipad with the car’s bluetooth for audio already.
@@VIPERAfrica 100% better. Needed a firmware update but it works flawlessly. iPads can connect to multiple devices simultaneously. I have it connected to the car via Bluetooth as well
My ipad seems to use the gps from my iphone 12 pro max...how bad is it when I'm out driving? I've only tested it at home while tethered to my phone. Was going to get a cellular ipad but it seems like its working fine, to the point of knowing what direction I'm pointing in my house.
It’s not accurate at all unfortunately. It lags constantly and shows in the app I’m still several miles behind where I am actually am, please it doesn’t calculate your exact location on the phone it just guess with a very large range that’s not accurate. I was hoping it would work 😕
Recently dove into the iPhone world, had similar thinking to you, but with the iPad 64 GB GPS+Cell. The iPad would be mostly for home use - larger screen to internet browser, call up my recipes in the kitchen on larger screen. I wouldn't use the GPS enabled iPad in the car daily, I was thinking for longer single day or multiday destination trips - every month or two. My thinking was wifi the iPad to my TMo iPhone hotspot, that would update the data to map app along the route. Would this work? How is the iPad screen in bright light inside a car? Would inbound phone calls come through the iPhone or iPad?
Great questions and thank you for watching! The screen works great in the car in bright light however my windows are tinted so that helps my situation with reducing the light and some glare. The calls would appear on both iPad and iPhone, so depending on where you want to answer the call is based on the device you answer from

That’s definitely what I should have done with the mini 6 with cellular! That gps makes the world of difference!

Good idea about the shortcuts! And yes the charging is probably the most difficult part to have it look neat and oem
i know i am blind
but where is the link to ipad mount?
I don’t seem to have an option to auto start my focus mode based on connection to my bluetooth stereo
any solutions to connect backup camera to iPad?

Will iPad 9th generation work
Yes that’s what I’m using in this video
