  • Reports in Spanish newspaper El Mundo at the start of 2021 shed light on the extent of Barcelona's financial plight.
Josep Bartomeu may have resigned, but the legacy of his disastrous reign as president lives on, and the La Liga giants are reportedly in €1.4 billion of debt.
The amount of short-term debt the club is saddled with has led to talk of Barca going bankrupt, so in this video, HITC Sevens examines Barca's frightening accounts, how things got so bad, and whether there is any way out for Lionel Messi's side.

The best thing that could happen to European football would be for some of these super rich and yet super in debt clubs to go bankrupt. Maybe then we'd see some sweeping changes in the way football is run in Europe (for the fans, not for the wallets) and we might actually see some actual financial fair play instead of clubs being either bankrolled by shady 'investors' or through outlandish loans.

Great post breaking down Barca's finances, especially their staggering wage bill. As a Real Madrid fan, I'm used to the lavish spending accusations, but Madrid's spending is somewhat modest in comparison to other clubs. I think Barca's biggest mistake happened after the sale of Neymar. Dembele & Coutinho were rash, panic induced, very overpriced impulse buys. While Griezmann is a great player, his contract it staggering. We'll see how the Barca saga unfolds.

As an economist I still do not understand why banks are looking at revenue, instead of operational profits. They look at growth and leverage through interest costs. A strategy that has too many flaws, any economist can tell! It should also not be allowed by the UEFA, because Barcelona (and some other teams) are buying players with money they can never pay! This is unfair competition and roaming off the income of other teams, making it harder to let those grow! It is time to stop this situation. Ban those unfair teams and let them first pay back their debts to maximum one year of their operational profit. That means about 1.3 billion euros in the case of Barcelona! They will be out of the picture for a very long time! And that is how it should be!

Finally, someone who understands that selling Messi would have been a catastrophic decision for Barça. I'll go out on a limb here and say half of Barça's fan base support the club because of Messi. And it is because of Messi that Barça are somewhat able to compete for the La Liga and CL title. Sure, the overall debt may reduce with Messi's sale and what then? They'll still be left with massive debt and without the biggest generator of revenue for the club. With Messi gone, La Liga's TV rating will inevitably drop and that would mean less money in broadcasting revenue, less money in from merchandise and other brand deals. There's a reason Bartomeu pulled every scummy move in the book in order to keep Messi at the club. The guy maybe a corrupt bastard, but he's not an idiot.

They should not be able to talk to any player who has penned a contract until that contract has ended, this should be the same for every club. It would help stop players acting like spoiled kids in order to manufacture a move for big bucks, or force the club they are with into offering to pay them more money just to keep them. A contract is a worthless bit of paper these days as so many get out clauses, or the sheer fact the player just wants a move because he's been taken off, not played or maybe his shirt was creased??
