- The video game market has been flooded by remakes and remasters of older games in the last few years. Things like Grand theft auto definitive edition, dead space, last of us part 1, mario 3d all stars, and final fantasy 7 are all recent examples of this, but there are so many more. Let's talk about why we're getting such a massive amount of remasters recently.

Easily the Dead Space Remake is the new bench mark for Video Game Remakes. It remains faithful to the original game while improving the level design, fixing outadated gameplay and mechanics and adding new content that gives additional context to the game’s story and it’s characters.
It's a really excellent remake of a great game

@@johnpsy4129 Isaac talks in the remake, all the new side content that gives additional context to the fall of the Ishimura as well as Isaac and Nicole. The ATS sequence is completely changed and is much better. The Zero G sequences have been completely redesigned.
gaming got invaded by lazy cash-grab-business-clerks. they don't care about fun they only care about making as much money as possible with the lowest effort possible (----> remakes). this is literally what you learn in business studies.
It's unfortunate many of these gaming companies are run by suits instead of people who love video games.
Most of the video game remakes that have been released are fun according to people generally
Once The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction gets a remake I can die happy. My whole childhood relieved and remastered would send me over the hills.

I wish we could get more new games instead of remasters
"Remasters" have existed since the 80s. They just used to call them ports and remakes (Super Mario All Stars, King's Quest vga remakes etc).
I was in college in 2005 and didn't get my head above water in the real world until like 12 years later. I did virtually no gaming then, so all these remakes are new to me. I even missed FF7 being a Nintendo kid back in the day.
That's definitely a cool thing about remakes. Now you're able to enjoy the games like they're still brand new for the first time
Remaking old games isn't "lazy" because they still have to completely remake the old game from scratch with all new art assets, sound, graphics, etc. Yes they don't have to re-record voice lines and music or come up with new ideas, but they don't do it to be lazy. They do it because it's very safe and a risk-free investment.

That's true, I was more thinking of a massive remake like ff7 got since ocarina of time is so legendary.

Oot 3D was amazing, it's a shame they put the significantly worse version on Switch. That's why so many people nowadays say it's overrated and needs a remake when it got a GREAT one in 2011.
I agree with you! As you said, remakes can help preserve older games and introduce them to a younger audience. But it sucks that remakes have become a substitute for new games. Also, adding slightly updated textures to a game that isn't even 10 years old, and asking $70 for it, is just greedy.
If I had to make an exception, though, I think a PS4 game that could really benefit from a remake/remaster, is Assassin's Creed Unity. Out of all the AC games, this one was the most ambitious. The technology of the time wasn't ready for what this game tried to achieve, and it needed much more time in the oven than the typical Ubisoft yearly release. I'd love to see someone give it another go.
When it comes to "next gen updates", I find so ridiculous the fact that if I buy a new GPU right now, I would be able to play all my PC games with better graphics and better frame rate, but if I get a PS5, I'd have to sometimes pay a fee to upgrade my PS4 games.
You know that last point wasn't even something I'd thought about much. You're right, when you upgrade your pc all the sudden ALL your games get a next gen upgrade with higher resolutions and graphics settings, but sometimes you have to pay either per game or just buy the whole game again on console.
Hopefully you're not talking about TLoU part 1, that was an excellent remake (remaster if you want to count 3d models being remade as part of a remaster). I understand the pricing was off, but other than that, the work put into it achieved great results.
I've subscribed after watching two vids, very good stuff I like the narrative, reminds me a bit of dunkey, you can definitely ignore this but two things I thought were punch up the endings, and make it clearer when you rant softly/whispery (still funny)

Remakes and remasters aren’t a bad thing for gaming. The problem is releasing games in a state the devs aren’t happy with then releasing the “full” version a few years later. A great example is Sun/Moon followed up with Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
We also don’t need PS5/Xbox Series X versions of games already available on PS4/Xbox One. Why does The Last Of Us have a release on PS3, PS4 and PS5, for example?
I would say they likely take away from resources a studio could use for a new game, but they're not bad as a concept. Some remasters/remakes are great.
@@realtayo42 Yeah, that’s why I said making a “definitive”/“ultra”/etc version soon after the original is bad practice. Same with remastering games that don’t need it other than to try to boost sales “Cuz new console”. It’s absolutely gone too far, with tons of rereleases of games like Skyrim and The Last Of Us.

I grew up with the original PlayStation, but I love it when my favourite games are remastered. I love playing Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider on my PS3 because the enhancements make them so much better than they already were on the PS2. It's also the same with The Nathan Drake Collection, The Last of Us, Return to Arkham, and The Ezio Collection on the PS4. I have also grown to love remakes, depending on if they're done properly. I was disappointed with Crash N.Sane and Spyro Reignited, but I love Medievil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Gears of War Ultimate Edition. They're prime examples of what remakes should be like. I'm also super excited for the Tomb Raider Remaster next February
I think a true remake can be really exciting because it fully brings an old classic into the modern era.
@realtayo42 I feel the same way, but for me, it also has to be faithful to the original game. I love the original Crash and Spyro, but the remakes weren't that faithful to me because they re did the voice acting, made them needlessly cartoony, and in Spyro's case, redesigned everything. Medievil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Gears of War are the exact opposite, and therefore, they feel much more faithful to their original games
Still waiting for resident evil 9 and look at Konami how long has it been since they announced a metal gear solid remake? If any one of those games need a remake, then it has to be metal gear solid 3 snake eater. Plus we need a new kind of metal gear solid game, not about some hundred different snakes and ocelots again but something completely different this time. I was going to say we need an mgs 5 to be done right and it’s sequel needs to be made, but that’ll be about just another game based on the past and not the future of its lore.
It's unfortunate that Konami drove Kojima out. The metal gear franchise is in their greedy hands, which is sad because it's such a legendary series.
Homeworld Remastered Collection and Command and Conquer Remastered Collection are 2 Hall of Fame worthy efforts. The Homeworld RC has the original versions included as ports without any changes that I know of. The C&C RC has all types of bonus extras and include content from multiple versions of the game(like Dino Levels from a Playstation port) and a custom music player that include original music, remastered music, and bonus music, as well as the ability to listen to any music from the 2 games whenever you want so you can listen to red alert music while playing the original game and vice versa.
I do like when developers actually go in and really carefully craft a new experience for an older game. Adding all those extra features is nice. I think it's more important for lost franchises to get revivals like that since that could be their chance to finally come back.

That's the craziest part. I understand remastering games that are at least 20 years old, but reworking games from last gen is a waste of time and money.

I honestly choose to look at video game remakes/remasters in the same way I look at tv show reboots, there’s gonna be allot of bad but you can find some Diamond when you look through the pile. Difference being is that unlike tv video game remakes don’t really have to try new things to get people attention. A good portion of the appeal is on nostalgia alone and they sell the game with the only real difference being a paint job. It’s not the case for every remake out there of course, you got games like mafia and destroy all humans and even the ratchet and clank remake as wonderful examples but it’s really not gonna be a good sign for the industry as whole when you have a year that won’t have any new IP’s but just remake and reboots of the old stuff from 20 years ago
Your point about them not having to change anything to get people to buy a remake is so true. So many remasters/remakes come out (Last of Us Part 1 lol) and people will re-buy the same game they already own even if the gameplay and story are the exact same.
As long as they are putting actual effort in it (FF7, Dead Space, Crash, Demons Souls, etc) I see no reason as to why it’s an issue. Doing shit like Last of Us Part 1 is stupid. Not that doing a PS5 version is bad but asking $70 is the dumbest shit ever.
Ya know because it's easier and safer than taking risks with new IPs even though risk taking is what made these companies big in the first place.

The only time I'm ok with remakes existing is if 1. The game being remade truly needs it (which 9 times out of 10 they don't) 2. They should be as faithful as possible, story, set pieces, characters and writing, gameplay, it should not be compromised to appeal to modern sensibilities on all fronts. 3. The original should also be made available on more current hardware. Give customers the choice. At this point I'll take "remakes" more like the crash and spyro "remakes" aside from graphical overhauls the games are mostly faithful. Other than that I'd rather have HD ports or remasters if they're gonna sell old games again instead of screwing up on a remake. Re2 and 3 remake come to mind when i think of unfaithful remakes, and re4 remake recently got added to the list. These games share the names of the originals while basically being whole different games.
I'm a firm believer that if most of these games were just made available on modern consoles, there would be almost no need for any remakes

I genuinely don't think the "rebuild from scratch" like TLOU1 for example is a remake thing, it's a remastered thing, remakes genuinely changes the story while trying to stay in within the original story... FF7 Remake is pretty much a sequel to Advent Children lol
Yeah, that line gets blurred by a lot of different people/companies. I do think FF7 is the most clear remake of them all

Some deserve it. Like Crash, Spyro, Mafia, and the older Resi games. Other games, don't. Last of Us, Skyrim, and gta V.
I agree. The RE2 remake is especially awesome, while getting gta v for the 3rd time feels silly.
Remastered and remakes can be a good thing used correctly or deserved but I agree with you remastered and remakes are used way to much.

Now although I am against remasters and remakes in general. There's just too many of them nowadays. But one game that I would love to see get remastered personally. Is the Simpsons hit and run. I love that game so much. But I don't think it'll ever happen.
Yeah, there are some games that would be great to see again. TBH I think Hit and Run could be ported and would hold up fairly well today.
remake Power Stone 2 (Dreamcast), Time Splitters 2 (PS2), & Mischief Makers (N64), all Goated games ahead of their time.

I've actually never heard of the game, but I'll take your word for it.
Remake and remasters are great -- everyone likes to talk about game preservation, well, this is one way to do it since many games will not work on modern hardware and/or OS, or won't well.
If they change the setting, characters, or story (for those who care about it) is NOT a remake, its reboot. Thief 2014 is not a remaster, but isn't really a proper sequel to the real Thief trilogy, its a reboot (and from what I've heard only a Thief game in name; I'll play it eventually).
In terms of preservation simple ports would be more than enough for most games.

The problems of an old era. It was impossible to simply have those additions in a form of DLC back in the day, so here you go. The fact that some companies continued this trand of releasing fighting games long after the invention of DLC is a different type of problem.
Come to think of it, you are sorta like a remaster of other youtubers, like linustech, pdp, bruce lee, this good good people.
well a lot these remasters at least let you play on modern hardware, so that alone makes it a good thing.

True. I've been playing a lot of GBA and SNES games recently, and they're absolutely fantastic.
Some games deserve to be remastered so as not to be trapped in a past console generation. Xenoblade Chronicles 1 is the best example of this and hopefully Xenoblade Chronicles X follows eventually.
Final Fantasy VII Remake could have worked but making it episodic and action-based to cater to a fickle-minded Western audience made it a turn-off to RPG fans.
Oh yeah, Xenoblade 1 definitive is how I was able to access it and I'm in love now.

Last of us Part 2 is an incredible visual remake, I get that the price was to high (not on pc) but the work they did was phenomenal.
I think the price probably heavily affects how people view LOU part 1. If it was just a $10 upgrade or something it would've been a different story

RE 2 Remake is basically what changed the game industry, their remakes not only does better, but also fixes some problems in original game even the story is fixed and adds some new settings and gameplays (such as leons stealth, parry and dodge mechanics) the characters , the villains all of them are fixed, basically they still follow the og game but also add new lore to it

A video game remake offers new gameplay, new AI, new graphics, new level design, new sound design, new animations, new effects, new physics and in some cases, new voice acting and a modified story. Video game remakes are built from the ground up in a new engine. How are they not new video games? Yes they are inspired by old games but they are new video games. Would you call the original RE 2 and its remake same games? RE 2 remake has more in common with RE 7 than it has with the original. Would you call FF7 remake the same game as the original? Come on man. Mafia DE, RE 2 Remake, RE 3 Remake, Final Fnatasy 7 Remake provide a new experience to be called same games. Nothing is lost from them remaking old games for a newer generation to play. I have a friend who didnt have a playstation growing up so the crash trilogy was completely new to him and he fell in love because of the remake. the difference between movie and game remakes is mainly how they are made. Its hard capturing the magic of an animated movie in live action or CGI but game remakes are mostly just glow ups which is never a bad thing
I certainly mentioned a lot of the games you're talking about in a positive light. The stance of "all remakes/remasters are bad" is better to convey an initial point, but like all things it's a lot more nuanced than that. Things like FF7 remake are completely transformative and innovative in a number of ways, while trash like GTA Definitive Trilogy is basically shovelware.

Yup. If you don't like the game - it wasn't made for you. Just go and play something that was. I don't go around asking for a first person remake of "Myst" just because I didn't like the original - if I ever get interested to see later parts of the game, I'll simply watch it on youtube.

I do feel that some remakes are there mostly for the nostalgia bait, but it's fine when they actually put in the effort to make it feel like a whole new experience.
