I'm starting to learn to sail again as the last time I used a sailing boat was when I was 14 im now 53and that was a sailing dinghy so it's slowly coming back to me.
    Great video explanation

Excellently explained Captain Lang. I cant help but add an advanced technique. The jib handler can hold off on letting go of the sheet until the jib just slightly back winds itself. When he or she finally does let go of the jib sheet, the jib will go more quickly to the other tack. If you are quick on hauling in the jib sheet on the new tack you wont have to use the winch.

Thank you. You do a great job teaching and giving a better understanding of sailing techniques.
One passage topic I have questions about is how often to tack when your destination is straight upwind. Maybe this topic could be its own video.

Yes, this topic is on my to-do list. Short answer is there is no difference in distance between short or long tacks however you do loose a little speed every time you tack besides the extra work involved in tacking. So longer tacks are preferred.

With a self tacking jib there is no tightening the sail shape by grinding the sheet using the winch, the wind just fills the jib and the fixed sheet length to the rail creates the sail tension. My question is, does this lack of sheet tension with the self tacking system make for a rubbish sail shape, or is this only relevant when close hauled? and what should you do then with the self tacking jib when close hauled?

There are a number of self tacking systems. Most of them allow you to adjust the tension so there would be no issue with sail shape. Self tacking jibs are excellent for single handling. The only downside is that you are limited to a smaller jib. If you're not racing the self tacking jib is a lot less work and much more fun.

A quick question, I have a 24ft Motorsailer, I bought her last year and have only managed to get her out on the water once this past summer before having to take her out again for some unforeseen work. I have a question though.
She is a Masthead Sloop with a 140 Genoa. When tacking, the bowlines in the jib sheet keep getting stuck on the shrouds as the clew comes across the bow. Its all a bit rough as the sail comes over, causing the sail and the sheets to chafe on the shrouds as it come over. Should I partly furl the Genoa before tacking to prevent this or is it normal. Im getting back into saling after many years and in my day we did not have roller furling so its all a bit new to me. No unpleasant comments from know it alls please, you couldn't use the potty yourself once.

I am so sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I use a spare halliard attached to the top of the mast which I tie off one end to the bottom of a station which just forward of the mast, the other end is tied on the other side of the boat on a station, forward of the mast. Run the jib sheets on the outside of the tied off hilliard . The tied off haliard keeps the jib and jib sheets from touch the mast.

When Helmsman calls READY ABOUT, the crew should take up slack in lazy sheet before calling READY.

You are not wrong, but that was a single crew tack. It was well done. You also shouldn’t need the winch.

It was extremely cold...Because San Diego is the only place in the whole world where water freezes at 60 degrees! Well at least it feel that way.
