China's secret military lab exploits weakness in US Navy radar systems to simulate missile attack

  • A research lab claims to have discovered vulnerabilities in the US Navy's SPY-1D radar system. Using a hypersonic missile, two low-earth orbit satellites, and a radar frequency jamming system that confuses the SPY ship defenses, missiles could approach to within just 30 miles of a carrier battle group. At that point, electronic warfare assets on the satellites, and in the missile itself, overwhelm the US Navy radars and the missiles can adjust trajectory accordingly.
If these claims are true, they represent quantum jumps in China's Electronic Warfare capabilities, and also in ballistics. Experts concede that versions of the SPY have been deployed by the US Navy for so long--since the 1970's--that EW experts in other countries have had sufficient time to study them.

The YJ-21 is the ship launched version. The DF-21 is the land launched version. And there is also an air launched version. They all are terminal phase maneuverable with onboard radar and IR seekers. So even if you jam the radar, it can still see the ship. And the radar can see incoming fire so it can maneuver to evade them. It is questionable whether the US SM-6, SM-3 can even hit these things. They are not designed to attack maneuvering missiles.

If 5 hypersonic missiles will get shot down, then launch 10, 20, 50. You just need a few to get through and the USN will have a very bad day. Well not exactly, but pretty much useless in attacking mainland China because the carriers won't be able to get close enough or risk getting hammered. If your multi-billion dollar carrier carrying thousands of sailors has a 20% chance of getting hit by a really big missile if you move too close, are you really going to risk it? Is 10% acceptable? 5%?
THe whole point is to force the US military to have to make such calculations, because in the off chance that they really go hot war against China, a 5% chance might really mean a sunk carrier some time some where during the campaign and thousands of sailors will be feeding the fishes. How fast can the US build another carrier, or destroyer and then train the personnel to man them, assuming they will even have enough recruits.
The USN used to enjoy near immunity to attacks from their enemies so they can support this kind of doctrine using large carriers. If you can pound the enemy into dust with impunity without much risks of being hit back, then the only thing you have to concern about is how many fighters you can squeeze onto your carrier and how big your carrier has to be. Now that's no longer the calculation the USN can make and it is driving the people in the Pentagon up the walls.

Maritime empires are build with Gunboats diplomacy. Since WW2 the US has taken control of the British maritime empire with it's Navy fleets centered on it's aitcraft carriers and their dual Air (over the horizon) and Sea offensive capabilities. The hypersonic missiles are the equivalent of when the crossbow was invented. Suddently the heavy armored knights, protected by their troops, became vulnerable to a long shot from an ambushed enemy. That was the end of the days when the generals where on the battlefields to lead their troops.

They prefer to win on the economic and political spheres. ❤❤❤Kevin, I think the difference between CN & US is the former has been taught that as individuals they are NOT not entitled, not exceptional and not indispensable, they are always told that only within the strength of the collective they would not be bullied as they have been in the past as have been demonstrated to them within most of their living memory. Always assume the second place, as the first is always the target, but always try harder (apologies to AVIS).. Observe the CN leadership, world leadership is always couched as aspirational, never as the achieved except when they do achieve they will downplay the achievement and aspire to do better in the future. Only the unofficial underlings refer to whatever is “No. 1” as benchmarks. When CN do lead, you will find their internal competition very intense, eg. EV. The US used to have all these qualities until they assume exceptionalism, indispensability, hence the assumed sense of entitlement of our so called “leaders”. Sad, we have lost our wisdom, and will soon lose our exorbitant privileges.🇺🇸

Are you able to dig any deeper into the hypersonic projectile radar signature once it reaches top speed? Any object that reaches true hypersonic creates a plasma cocoon which essentially makes it disappear from radar sweeps as it continues on its path. I understand the need to conceal the launch, but once its in the air and at top speed it becomes an invisible bullet that will strike its target no matter what, the tech does not yet exist to counteract the physics and defend at those speeds.

In this case, there's no substantive facts and what he describes is both unlikely and even if made to happen impractical. This is obvious to anyone who knows how jamming and spoofing works. Using satellites to do this makes little sense because of power requirements, and the ability to control propagation. Jamming works best if you can get close, not from a satellite in space. And spoofing or fooling electronics is an art form to confuse and that can be done from many platforms.
