Your personal insights into the psychology of what drives us is so powerful. You bring out the best in people and encourage them to explore themselves. Thank you for being you!
Great interview. Really inspiring and beautiful views! Glad to see so many women in leadership roles in the ski industry. You are always able to communicate your love of skiing -- it's what makes you and this channel special.
Deb! So inspiring to see this video from an inspirational figure in the ski world yourself, yet so humbled by who's in front of you still to this day. Thanks for all you do!
She is so inspiring! We need more women in senior leadership in the ski industry- she’s a great example of what is possible. Thank you Aspen for implementing change and not just talking about diversity. Next step, Alterra brings this to their 14 other mountains, and promotes members of the BIPOC community and women for all tiers of leadership roles.
It is great to hear from the two of you. That scenery is so special. I wish I were out there with you at Aspen Highlands. Sorry I could not get to Aspen this year, the first year I have not been out there since Jonathan has been in Aspen - 21 years.
Another fantastic video Deb, I'm 56 and have learned so much from your channel, and not just skiing, but life lessons. The drills I've learned, which I do in my warm up have improved my technique considerably. My biggest problem is.....I suck going slow, catch edges, off balance fall over it's crazy. So lately I've been working on my going slow technique 😂 I'm a high advanced skier so it's maddening. I live on Vancouver Island in Canada and the province has had a amazing season and it's not over. Revy, Kicking Horse been amazing and OMG the sled skiing is out of this world. Take care everyone.
"hi katie, how do i look? Do I look like a tourist" (at the end of this video). You are the best Deb! Thank you for yet again a very interesting and inspiring video.
Deb thank you so much for this content.......inspirational and motivating....shared this immediately with my wife........in a few years that hike and living skiing every day is the retirement plan for us both....a big thanks for helping us remain focussed......!!
Great video . . . I love it ! It's always great to see women making much needed inroads in the Ski industry !! I remember Penny Pitou with her 2 podiums (silver in GS & DH) in the 60's Olympics. I felt so blessed to finally meet her in her travels during the last few years. Thanks for sharing . . .
I became a registered member of PSIA in 81-82 winter in NC in. The Karl Plattner ski school.... .... Worked up to Level III 5 years later ........ This is my first season not teaching ..... Thanks Covid ........ Deb you are and have been an inspiration .....hope to share the same snow with you some day..
Katie was great and I can relate to what she says. Thank you for the video! My analogy of success was when I took a day off to ski a few years ago. It was new Cascade cement day, about a foot heavy new snow . I went down a Black Diamond run that was steep and as I was connecting my 3rd turn my new downhill ski all of a sudden sunk, throwing me forward as I skied the fall line. I didn't panic even though I was close the the point of no return before gravity took over. I stayed with the ski and skied out of it. As I rode back up the chairlift I analyzed what just happened and thought of how skiing could relate to the analogy of success in life and came up with this: 45% is skill, 45% is confidence, and 10 % is luck.
I feel your pain, afraid of heights! Skiing and mountain biking helps, but some of those chair lifts, especially Jackson Hole, whew, takes my breath away. This video goes in the keep box under "better person"! Thank you for creating videos; I've become a better skier this year, incorporating mindfulness on the slopes and in the workout room due to your teaching. I'm working on feeling the balance in my feet and ankles. I'm inspired!
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong I ski our local hill in Boise, Id. Bogus basin. We travel every year in February to different resorts. We have been to Steamboat twice, one of our favorites, amazing snow and a great town! Of all the ski videos I watch you have the best delivery, real world on slope information I use to get better. Thank you for that!
@@vjr5261, I hear great things are going on at Tamarack this year. I have friends that ski there, also mountain bike. Funny, I've never skied there, I'll drive two days to get to Steamboat but I haven't driven two hours to get to Tamarack, it's time to change that and come visit!
Discovered the channel fairly recently, last 6 months or so, and have really enjoyed the videos and going back through the older videos too. I'm UK based, and a qualified accountant, but covid has driven home how passionate I feel about skiing (because I've not been able to ski for over a year now) so I'm embarking on my ski career this year and starting my instructor qualifications to hopefully one day be able to say i make all my "pay checks" from the ski industry. Thanks for your videos, I really appreciate them!
I have been skiing for many, many years and ski for the reason so elegantly expressed by Katie. Thanks for sharing. And, Deb, you are not the only one skiing who has a fear of heights in places where we ski. Standing at the top of Snowbird where the tram lets out gives me the willies, as does riding some of those chairs with no safety bars. But we endure just because of what she said.
Time01:20 The most beautiful toilet scene ever seen😆 I like the resort manager talking about... Talking initiative and be willing to put in the extra work where you think it will help the business, the individual and yourself... If you are always self-serving you're not gonna get anywhere. I also like to set some serious short term tasks (i.e. a beautiful and smooth 360 high speed turn, which inspired by my son) in my ski journey too. Ski 🎿 is the most enjoyable and exciting sport I ever experienced so far in my life.
Really enjoyed that. There are only two places where I feel that sense of freedom and appreciating that each day and each ride is different; when I am on skis and when I ride my bike. Doesn't need to be long or can be a day when things don't go to plan but that feeling of the wind in your face and only thinking of the moment is difficult to beat. At the moment there is no opportunity to ski however positive videos like this keep us going in the knowledge that we will be able to experience it all for real one day soon.
Excellent. Love to hang with the girls. Hope to see ya tonight and tomorrow in the women’s summit webinars. Would absolutely love to ski with you. Just cliniced with David Oliver on snow. Most excellent experience.
I know! That was the big fail of the day. such a bummer. Battery issues was just one of the days glitches. Just happy with what I was able to get. Sorry there isn't the descent footage!!!
God bless you ladies. You're sharing an amazing wealth of knowledge, these videos are great! Can you talk about equipment (skis)? Does anyone ski the all mountain skis? I see you choose to stay with the more narrow skis.
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Darn it. Great vid as always. These interviews are fantastic Deb. Aside: The view from the top of Highlands is spectacular. I only get there once every few years but I always have the same reaction when I get to the top on a blue sky day - “WOW!”
Thanks Deb. I'm about 4 years older and your conditioning is inspiration for me, but lugging skis at altitude, wow! How much higher is the ridge at Highlands Bowl? Your last video was at Taos (another high ski area, higher than Steamboat).
Both inspiring. Two of my favorite women in the industry. Alterra has certainly lived up to its diversity challenge. In addition to having Katie in a Senior VP management position, they have Kim Mayhew as the president and COO of Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah, also part of the Alterra family.

Still in the same orange boots from 25 years ago when we last made some turns together in Australia Katie.
Deb if you haven't been to Maroon Bells in the summer, do it. One of the most spectacular places on earth.
What is Katie carrying her skis with on the boot pack?
Aspen sells a sling to carry skis up the highland bowl. then folks can keep their hands free for the hike
