I love the development of your game but I hope that you work on a marketing strategy. I watch the indie developer who may made "We who are about to die" and was impressed by the level of detail and methods he used in promoting his game even to what day to release it. ua-cam.com/video/bhVNu54_T8s/v-deo.html As a solo developer and coder maybe do some research and upskilling in game marketing so you work get more rewarded at the end. BTW Impressed with the work , family , personal and solo game development balance :)
Lost Relic, I've been following the progression of your game development journey for a little over a year now, and I hope you know that you serve as a huge inspiration for me (and I am sure plenty other of indie developers as well). It's nice to see that you set aside time to be human and that you take time to implement mechanics you find meaningful to the gameplay. Thanks for releasing videos and sharing the behind the scenes. I am really looking forward to seeing the finished game. Keep up the good work :D
Agree with this- I'm finishing up my first ever game now (while mostly being a stay-at-home Dad at the moment) and it's really helpful to get motivation and ideas from your videos. 👍
Your blood and gore effects are so… extra. The very definition of the word ‘juice’. I bloody love it. Your game is very near the top of my wishlist. Also, you seem like a great fun dad as well as a wise game dev dude 😊
Was a great privilege to play this latest build of Blood and Mead with you , my friend! There's so much in the game that has not been revealed yet, I'm excited for people to check it out. Especially the 'mead' stuff, holy hell that is epic. The game is tough and challenging, but rewards patience and timing. Been a great year of dev once again , here's to doing it all in 2024 mate! Cheers, Oli
While watching the test play of the game I noticed you could add something on Theme to when the character dies. Instead of "Dead" being the game over text have "Valhalla is Calling" with Valkyries swooping down to take you back to the last checkpoint. To add even more complexity have "Valhalla" trigger only if you die to an enemy where any other environmental or self caused death trigger the "You have disappointed your ancestors"
ooh tip for 6:20 is that easing curves are your friend in exciting the player and building anticipation. Using an ease out (like a y=sqrt(x) sorta thing) on your level up meter means that initially, when just starting a particular xp lvl, when the slate is blank and the player is the least invested, you level up faster. But, at the climax, just before reaching the next one, it's painfully slow and even more exciting when you meet it. The values stay the same, but the variety in feeling over the course of a level is so worth it.
One of my favorite game journeys to follow. I think the game is made better by you taking your time with it and enjoying life rather than slaving away to put something out as soon as possible. Greatness is easier to achieve when your house is in order, and this devlog is evidence of that. Keep it up ♥
I'm really glad that there are new details about the development of Blood And Mead. When I see such videos, I understand that the life of indie developers is not all about game development (as you rightly pointed out). In general, I'm happy that you continue to release videos, looking forward to the game's release, and I hope to keep working on my own project in a similar way.
The new "marshland/swampland" area looks SO cool! You absolutely nailed the atmosphere! I especially like the flies and the bubbles along the top of the water. It's the small details that count!
I am not into 2d games, but following your progress is such a great inspiration to keep going with my own game. Thanks for being such a pillar in the indie dev game community.
@@GingerNingerish yep that's true! I love yours video about mobile game with spaceships. I think thats a right way to do it. I'm also making videos. Just realized new one about may day routine that I shoot in cinematic style. It will be great if you check it. I really hope that's UA-cam will help me to build some cool connections with others indie devs 🐥
Your game is actually turning out to be SUPER AMAZING!! Just discovered your channel today and been binge watching, I love the way you present the game in a really entertaining and realistic way!
Just wanted to say that your project has been a huge inspiration to me as a learning game developer and to my own viking game idea! love the content! keep it up!
I've been subbed for years and haven't watched any of your videos in a while. I can remember the early versions of Blood & Mead that you showed off in prior videos and I must say, it has come on leaps and bounds since then. You've made some mighty progress, great job!
Wow, this has come so far since it was last shown off! Love the progress. Best of luck for 2024 and thanks for being such a huge inspiration for other indie devs out there!
Love the updates dude! Bring a dad myself and working on a game can be a nightmare when it comes to balancing the multiple hurdles that life throws at you.
I really like the death animations + associated sound design, very impact full. On the other hand, when the player is hit (1:18), I didn't feel enough impact, I recommend you to take (or retake) a look at how this is handled in hollow knight . It gives a strong mental impact to being hit Ps : I'm an indie dev / dad as well and I'm inspired by you taking the time to share all of this with such honesty and humility.
Loved the video! It is really great to not only see the progress you make with Blood And Mead, but also to see how your videos advance in their content and editing. Always inspirational to see how you put together your indie dev journey and real life. As I am going to enter the industry myself soon from a career perspective, I feel like it gets even more important to balance things correctly between job, hobby and life.
Man, I'm a full time dev just starting my indie game dev journey (about 2 years full into my current game) and the last part of your video inspired me. I'm about to have my first kid, just got married, and starting a life/working full time in tech on top of hobbies/friends/responsibilities doesn't always leave me the most time to work on the game. Still we push on. Good luck and I'll make sure to wishlist!
Phenomenal video. Been following you for years and this was one of the best to see such progress. I work full time + dad + software developer as well so I empathize with the nearly impossible task to balance everything. You’re certainly a role model to keep pushing and stay positive! 👍🏼🍻
You're cool bro! Keep up this hustle. This is my favorite video of you yet - this was one of the times I watched and thought "I wish I was friends with this guy". I think that's a key part of success on these platforms - the parasocial relationship building.
As a solo video creator who uses a game engine, I can certainly feel your pain. I usually have to create my own models, textures, systems, code, maps, make my own rigs, occasionally make my own animations and on top of that research everything related to the video -documentary I'm making. There is no 8hours schedule when you working alone.
Your devlogs are a truly inspiration for me. I'm in this world of inde dev recently, i am learning a lot watching your videos and your game it's so chill to watch, it's so smothless in the viking gore way to say it. Congrats from Brazil mate. Love ya job
Dude! This turns out really awesome! I've wishlisted your game and I'm excited to play it! Keep up the good work and the motivation, you are doing great man! This is inspiring!
What an inspiration! It's probably been said, but as a Unity developer, I am truly inspired by your progress in Blood and Mead. Your pure will as a solo developer to achieve, an already well polished game, and the level of skill required, to create something of this scope. I will enjoy playing your game when it's released, and look forward to more devlogs. Thank you for your work.
It's amazing to the progress that you made on your game! O inspiring is your commitment to make you game game! keep up the amazing work, the game is on my Wishlist, cant wait !!!!
One brick at a time, and the house looks majestic once finished. Organization is really important yeah, workflow order as well, you don't start painting the walls when you didn't finish the foundations (although the analogy has limits here).
I feel so lazy now. I also have kids, full-time job, pets etc and haven't done almost anything this whole month on my game. Your game is getting better and that intro is so cool!
Often times indie devs tend to lean on the fields they're talented at, so you see out there beautiful games with terrible gameplay or fun games with simple art... but Blood and Mead is so good at everything, that it's almost unbelievable that you made all that by yourself! The art and animations are great, the combat looks sooo satisfying and the level design also looks on point!
It's really nice to watch your progress. I'm a solo dev too with a full time job and a family. Luckily my wife is super supportive. If I ever release my first big project, it will be mainly because of her. Keep all the right people around you and you can achieve anything.
Great vid as always! Keep it up because your videos are motivating me to move forward with my project. I can identify with you especially in terms of last part you showcased in your vid... but your life seems more active and entertaining, it's like you motivate me to move forward in life as well! Because of that I own you big thanks and I wish you the best
Been following you on and off for a long while now. I love how your game is turning out. Wish I had the talent and dedication to do something like that myself.
Well said at the end, often i feel like no progress is made on my own indie game and things always seem to take longer than i expect. slow and steady. keep it up, we love to see it!
LRG great video! Blood and Mead has been wishlisted, thank you for the time you put into these videos. I look forward each and everyone. Now for the Goat Cheers!
Watched 2 Times. 😂 Been following for so many months and I love the way you share your work/life/ passion for indie games and your game of course. Keep that energy and mental health. #inspiration
Not sure how I came across your channel.. but so glad I did because your videos showing all this are so epic and entertaining to watch! Would love to play this game even thou I have not played any for years! This also inspires me to dip into Unity and escape from regular c# development on my own time! Keep going!
As a fellow indie developer, it’s nice to see you progressing in your development and it gives me motivation to work on my game. Keep up the good work! :)
Great progress man, i don't know how you were able to find the time for the videos. Id love to do some myself its just hard enough trying to make the progress needed on games as a solo dev. And its a separate skill i haven't developed. Btw it looks like you've got you fidelity level locked in, i hope you have your scope more formalized as far as number of levels story progression. Having a good sense of the price point your targeting and how much content and game you need to make to call it done is something that ive given a lot of thought. Since you could literally spend forever making a game without putting bounds on the game. Good luck, appreciate the motivation you've inspired in me! ❤
man the "use grayscale" part really got me. i cant remember how many times when using an asset store asset i had to go and convert the texture to grayscale my self, just so that i could have full control in unity.
John, you really bring out of me the desire to create, you've been an inspiration to me and many others for a long time, and with every update you give us your game looks more and more polished and fun. Also, thanks for adding in those bits of your personal life, they really let me see who I want to be in the future. Cheers, man, I wish you the best!
In Turkey, Steam changed local currency to Dollar. So buying games is almost impossible for us now, but i will support and probably buy the game. Looks great and fun to play and aside from that, you are one of my favorite from YT.
i dont usually like side scrollers, but this looks great. especially love the way the video is setup, I feel like most dev logs just say a bunch of stuff but this actually feels organised and more interesting.
Looks good to me. I don't play games much, and I'm not even a game developer (I'm a web developer), but I follow you for a while now and I have watched a lot of your videos. Good stuff 👍👍
For this game, wonderful would be that some levels to have boss battles. So it will definitely be a great feature for the design of this special game. To have some characters that represents bosses that the player will face them at some levels during the campaign. You're doing a great job with this game and I'm supporting you further with your work!
I love the enthusiasm and excitement you have for the various features you put into your game! As a fellow game dev, it's those moments when you work really hard on implementing something you hope will be cool, and then getting chills when you see it work out exactly as you had planned that keeps me coming back to making games. Also, I share your hatred of UI design 😅
Sometimes I look back at the systems and muse: "wow how did I manage to make these things!?" You are so right about it being the hook that keeps us coming back for more pain! and yeah, UI is rough....
That wind effect! Hahaa man, you definitely have a flair for the dramatic. Loved the update! Love every bit of what you're doing with your game. (Although the character's long arm, in the throw and catch animation, might be stretched a bit far.) The content around skills gives me a vague idea of the general scope of what you have in mind and about where you are with it. Very interesting. That's cool. It's ambitious, and super cool, but not over-the-top ridiculous. Nice. I once commented, myself, quite a while back, wondering about a Blood and Mead release date, because.. someone once said that the difference between a dream and a goal is a target date, and.. while I do not want a lot of attention on myself, gosh I would sure like to have even one person asking me how my project is going. (So, you know, I was just trying to "do unto others.") But of course "how's it going?" is very different from "when will it be ready?" (!) and the later is something I have certainly had way more than enough of in my life. So I can understand and relate to having maybe a bit of a negative reaction to that particular question. I think you're absolutely right to treat this like the ancillary project that it is, in the context of the rest of your life, and just let it be "ready when it's ready." Most any kind of dev is stupidly hard to estimate, and game dev is especially so, and when you work full time and have a family and a life besides.. even trying to hit target dates for small bits of work is probably the wrong strategy, because it would tend to produce either life imbalance or burn out or both. Maybe for those of us who are in that circumstance, the best we can do is just do the best we can to maintain a "never give up" mentality. Our work on them lives on because finishing them someday is solidly on our bucket list. My kid also loves the creative, sort of Me flavored, sometimes-crafty things we do for fun together. I know they will always be remembered. That is a priceless thing. I can never get these years back, I only get one shot at choosing how I spend them. So no personal project can be allowed to shut that stuff down.
I hope you enjoyed the upates!

Looks good to me. I don't play games much, and I'm not even a game developer (I'm a web developer), but I follow you for a while now and I have watched a lot of your videos. Good stuff 👍👍
Man, the video itself is so SATISFYING. Love the way the game has evolved.
That sneak preview of the mead power-up looks awesome!!
For this game, wonderful would be that some levels to have boss battles. So it will definitely be a great feature for the design of this special game. To have some characters that represents bosses that the player will face them at some levels during the campaign. You're doing a great job with this game and I'm supporting you further with your work!
Nice to see the progress. We'll get there!
Loved the ending. You're both dev'ing to live and living to dev it seems. I'm on this path too. Kid, job, dog, outdoors, viking dev with dreams. Skål!
looks incredible!
great progress indeed man ! much love
Love the devlog! I’m looking to start making games as well but if you need a game tester I’m happy to play the game for you!
(Although the character's long arm, in the throw and catch animation, might be stretched a bit far.)
The content around skills gives me a vague idea of the general scope of what you have in mind and about where you are with it.
Great video, so fast paced!
