  • Hey Horse Lovers! Kyle and I went to a horse sale at Mt. Hope Auction House in Ohio. This auction was actually pretty decent and this particular sale was a limited draft and major driving horse sale. They also had a few riding horses and ponies. At this sale there were mainly standardbreds with a few draft horses in the mix. In this video I will talk about what I am looking for in a potential auction horse purchase, and also share some educational tips when it comes to browsing horse auctions. Did any horses catch my interest? The MAIN question is did I bid on any and WIN? Watch to see! IF YOU ENJOY MY CONTENT SUBSCRIBE!

Thank you for bringing us along on your Auction adventures. I think it's good for people to see the horses at these auctions. Every horse there has a story of some kind. Checking them over is really educational for us watching the video. You've helped a lot of horses already, and, you can't save them all. You can surely feel good about the horses you have saved thus far. I can't wait to see your next horse purchase. Good luck on your next couple of Auctions and hopefully you will find something that was meant to be.

❣💯 So sweet of you, Shae, to scratch, massage and comfort that nervous horse toward the end of the video; he really relaxed. Think those auctions are scary to some of them. Sorry you missed a chance to bid on the Belgian draft who is "gorgeous."

@@freespiritequestrian Well, you always say, everything happens for a reason. Temperamentally, you are very empathic to animals and use the word, "kind," a lot in describing many of them. You read their eyes' expressions. I think you actually "manifest" that kindness in equines who are on the same wavelength as you. It's wonderful to see the connection. You will get your Belgian draft horse another time; sometimes people buy a horse and then change their mind and she's at auction again. See how that goes. Mt. Hope is a cool, little bungalow.

I'm sorry that one draft had already been sold, but like you said, everything happens for a reason. You will find exactly what you want when the time is right. Thank you Shae for doing what you do. Hi again SHAE
Always good to stay true to exactly what you're hoping to find as when you do it will be the right one. I'm always sad to see the super nice ones whose feet are in terrible condition. Usually if X rays done there would be bad rotations or other waiting to happen problems. Hard to believe there are some who don't realize or care if they don't have great feet you don't have a horse. Nice horses are wasted because of poor or lack of hoof care. Soo too bad...

It was the impression I got at least from the first episodes I watched. Nice videos, I like these auction videos especially since when don't have many of those here in sweden. some kind of animal regulation after too many people lied about the horses being sold, ending up with kids riding dangerous horses, or getting horses that needed to be put down. The horse by the door may have been shivering due to being subjected to a cold draft, but my first impression is a possible neurological disorder, similar to Parkinson's or MS in humans, which causes shaking and muscle spasms. The horse standing right next to it was fine. Or, it could have been really scared being in a strange place. A blanket may have helped. I wonder what its owner would've had to say?

@@freespiritequestrian I often wonder how often these hoof neglect cases are from elderly folks who can no longer keep horses, and a family member just finds someone to haul them off to auction. When I was a kid there were three different neglected horses on my road. Eventually the neighbors coordinated and they all wound up in the same pasture with a bunch of beef cattle. They had horrible hooves, the two ponies had them curling up and over. One day a huge trailer came and just took all the horses and cows away. Kids on the bus teased me that my beloved horses were off to become dog food and I always believed that. But that wasn't necessarily the case. As an adult I often wondered how those three families could neglect those horses for so long! I snuck in to groom them and pick their hooves but was powerless beyond that.

@@juliaforsyth8332 I'm not an authority on the matter by any means, but from the (large amount) of horse auction related videos I've consumed by different content creators, I have also sometimes heard that the Amish take great care of their horses. I suspect like any people, there are ones who do it right, ones who do it wrong, and everyone in between. I just don't feel it's fair to make an overarching statement that all Amish mistreat their horses. Would be curious if Shae has some insight on this and time to comment about it.

🙈💯That kind, stout, Palomino with the "pretty eyes" was awesome. The hooves were jagged? Question: what is a "fine-boned" horse, that 8-year-old? Is that like humans being fine boned, like moi here? I know people, too, have "heavier" skeletal structure, usually men.

It means they are smaller and lighter in stature :). The palomino was cool but I didn’t feel a connection.

@@freespiritequestrian Hear than on the Palomino! Horses have different personalities based on their breed and history. So, you and Kyle and going for the big-boned Belgian draft horses. They are very cool! And can support larger-sized riders. One day when y'all have more acres, you can buy him all the ponies he wants. My grandpa had 60 acres, what a wonderful life of "free spirit," as you say.

May I suggest a few horse buying tips? I am retired now but I spent over sixty years training, buying and selling, coaching amateur riders, and judging horse shows. A great life.
If a horse was declared sound by a seller, I would have that declaration written on the sales ticket. If an issue was discover post purchase before leaving the sale ground I would rely on the sale management to resolve the issue. All US livestock auctions are bonded to protect buyers and sellers alike. Nearly all auctions have a Vet present use as a resource. In my world we require complete health records, X-ray, complete medical exams.
When I was in my 30s I stopped riding horses of unknown heritage, it made for too many uncertainties in my program. The unknown prolonged the time my students and I required to attain goals, whether is was to be a better personal equestrian or a world class competitor.
I lived in OK and did business in TX, OK, MO, ARK, and KS mainly so quarter horses and kindred breeds were the first choices. When you became familiar with the families within each breed then you could have reassurance of traits of disposition, soundness, intelligence, kindness, willingness, and other things that fit your program. There are bloodlines I would love to work with and others I avoided just like avoiding certain people. I rode some horses that were the 3rd or 4th generation offspring of horses I rode years earlier.
I really enjoy your videos and wish you great success.

Yes there is always a vet at these auctions but only to pull coggins. They never evaluate or do anything else. At extremely high end auctions they have what you’re stating, not at these types though. Thanks for sharing your experiences. ❤️

Just sharing old war story::::regarding different kind of auction, when I was about 16 I bought a truck load of horses (8 horses I think) at the Boonville, MO monthly auction. I paid $47 for ewe necked dun stud on the low end and $110 for a gorgeous black mare on the top end, around $60 average for the rest. My good friend in TX just sold a mare to Israel for $95,000 and donated another to Texas A&M appraised at $125,000. Never be surprised in the horse business.
I would check with vets and farrier at your sales. For a modest fee I bet they would represent your interest when evaluating a horse pre purchase, leaving final decision to you. Might save getting a problem or passing on something that is minor issue. Make friends with an old Cowboy or horse trader, they know the territory.

@@billarends2244 thank you! I have bought many horses and I’m usually pretty good about determining but of course I don’t know all. I do have friends I bring along for another set of eyes here and there and that’s always good. Honestly though the only vet I trust is my own. ❤️

I wish I could get a horse or any equine. Unfortunately my backyard isn't big enough and there are probably harmful plants outside. For smaller equines, yes, since they don't need too much space but big enough for them to frolick, except the plants are a problem considering there are ones that are poisonous for them to eat by mistake. If I were lucky to get one, I'll go with a Miniature Horse.
